Types of Enterprise Data and Enterprise Data Management

Objective
After attending this session, you should know
• Types of Enterprise data
1. Master Data
2. Transactional Data
3. Analytical Data
• Enterprise Data Management
• Enterprise Data Mgmt vs. Master Data Mgmt
• Simplifying Enterprise Data Management - Data Warehouse, Data Mart, Data
Lake/Big Data
• Sources of Enterprise data
Types of Enterprise Data
• Our digital world is growing at an alarming rate.
• The total amount of data created, captured, copied, and consumed globally
is forecast to increase rapidly, reaching 64.2 zettabytes in 2020. Over the
next five years up to 2025, global data creation is projected to grow to more
than 180 zettabytes.
• However, data remains one of the most underutilized assets of any
organization.
• Enterprise data management is supposed to fix this paradox.
• All business enterprises have three varieties of physical data located within
their information systems. This data is characterized by their data types and
their purpose within the organization.

• a zettabyte is 1,000 exabytes
• one exabyte is 1,000 petabytes
• One petabyte is 1,000 terabytes.
• One terabyte is 1,000 gigabytes (actual 1024)

• A zettabyte is enough storage for 30 billion 4K movies, or 60 billion video

games, or 7.5 trillion MP3 songs according to Seagate.

Group exercise:

Come up with 3 examples of:

1) Master Data
2) Transactional Data
3) Analytical Data

Be prepared to share!
Transactional data
● Transactional data are the elements that support the on-going
operations of an organization and are included in the application
systems that automate key business processes.

○ Can include areas such as sales, service, order management, manufacturing,

purchasing, billing, accounts receivable and accounts payable.
○ Refers to the data that is created and updated within the operational systems.
○ Normally stored within normalized tables within Online Transaction
Processing (OLTP) systems and are designed for integrity.
Analytical data
● Analytical data are the numerical values, metrics, and measurements that
provide business intelligence and support organizational decision making.

○ Typically analytical data is stored in Online Analytical Processing (OLAP)

repositories optimized for decision support, such as enterprise data warehouses
and department data marts.
○ Defined as the numerical measurements rather than being the describing data.
Master Data
● Master data is usually considered to play a key role in the core operation
of a business:

○ Refers to the key organizational entities that are used by several functional groups
and are typically stored in different data systems across an organization.
○ Represents the business entities around which the organization’s business
transactions are executed and the primary elements around which analytics are
conducted.
○ Typically persistent, non-transactional data utilized by multiple systems that
defines the primary business entities. [1]
Data management
• Data management is the practice of collecting, keeping, and using data securely,
efficiently, and cost-effectively.
• The goal of data management is to help people, organizations, and connected
things optimize the use of data within the bounds of policy and regulation so that
they can make decisions and take actions that maximize the benefit to the
organization.
• A robust data management strategy is becoming more important than ever as
organizations increasingly rely on intangible assets to create value.
• Managing digital data in an organization involves a broad range of tasks,
policies, procedures, and practices.
• The work of data management has a wide scope, covering factors such as
how to:
• Create, access, and update data across a diverse data tier
• Store data across multiple clouds and on premises
• Provide high availability and disaster recovery
• Use data in a growing variety of apps, analytics, and algorithms
• Ensure data privacy and security
• Archive and destroy data in accordance with retention schedules and compliance
requirements

Enterprise Data Management
● Enterprise data management (EDM):
○ Process of inventorying and governing your business’s data and getting your
organization onboard with the process
○ As much about managing people as it is about managing data.
○ Making sure your people have the accurate and timely data they need
○ Standards for storing quality data in a standardized, secure, and governed place.
Enterprise Data Management
Benefits of enterprise data management:

● Accessing high-quality data for accurate analysis

● Ensuring your data is secure and compliant under regulations
● Consolidating data across multiple sources for increased efficiency
● Having a consistent data architecture that scales with your enterprise
● Data management solutions, like Informatica, can assist you with all of
these. Further, data analysis and other data work will be more efficient
because your people will know exactly where to find the data they need.
● Well-governed data lineage makes it easy to quickly identify data
dependencies, understand who is using each data source, and make
relevant data accessible.

Enterprise Data Mgmt vs. Master Data Mgmt

● Master data management involves creating a single view of your data in a

master file or master record.
○ Will define the essentials you need for a given process.
○ Like a requirements document that details the necessary fields and inputs to your
data source.
● For example, what does a sales department need to store its leads and
opportunities?
○ Names, phone numbers, and email addresses.
○ A master file will list every requisite dimension in a dataset in a standardized
format.
How to get to Enterprise Data Management

1. Complete a data audit

a. List or chart the data produced, used, and deleted in a business process
b. A data-cataloging project is crucial in ensuring a big picture of the data
2. Once data is cataloged:
a. clean the data and transform it into a standard format.

Unfortunately, projects like data cataloging and data preparation can be

challenging, intensive, and complex
Enterprise data sources
● Companies store data in various systems and formats
○ Databases
○ Spreadsheets
○ Access databases
○ Word documents
○ Wikis
○ Microsoft Visio
○ Paper
○ Many, many, many more
Enterprise data sources
● Enterprises store their data for a number of reasons

○ Regulatory/audit
○ Process improvement
○ Financial
○ Customer data
○ Marketing
○ Operations
○ Redundancy/Disaster recovery
