14 Water-Notes

The document discusses the water cycle and sources of water. It describes how water evaporates from oceans, lakes and plants and condenses to form clouds. The water then falls as rain, snow or hail and flows into rivers and streams or seeps underground, completing the water cycle. It also discusses floods from heavy rain and droughts from lack of rain.

Water
Uses of water :
Water is used for drinking, washing, cooking, bathing, cleaning etc.

Sources of water :
Water is present in oceans, lakes, rivers, streams, ponds, wells etc.
About two thirds (2/3) of the earth is covered with water. Most of this water is in
the oceans and seas.

The water in the oceans and seas has salts dissolved in it. This salty water is called
saline water.
Saline water is not fit for domestic use, agriculture or industries.

Water in the air :

Water is added to the air by the evaporation of water from oceans, lakes, rivers
ponds and by transpiration by plants.
Evaporation is the process by which water changes into water vapour on heating.

Evaporation of water in sunlight and in shade

Transpiration is the process by which plants give out excess water in the form of
water vapour through the leaves.

Formation of clouds : Water vapour rises up in the air at certain height where
cooling process takes place and condense to form tiny droplets of water. This appears
as clouds.
When the tiny droplets of water join together to form bigger drops of water then
they fall down as rain, snow or hail.

The cold surface of the glass containing iced

water, cools the air around it, and the water
vapour of the air condenses on the surface of the
glass.

What happens to the water which falls down to the earth as rain, snow
or hail :
Some of the water flows down and forms streams, rivers which are finally goes into
the seas and oceans.
Some of the water fills up the ponds and lakes.

Some of the water seeps into the ground and forms ground water.

Water cycle :
The water from the oceans and surface of the earth evaporates and rises up in the
air.
It cools and condenses to form clouds and then falls back to the earth as rain,
snow or hail.
This circulation of water between the oceans and land is called water cycle.

What happens if it rains heavily ?

Excess of rainfall causes rise in the level of water in river, lakes and ponds. This
water spreads over large areas and causes floods.
Floods cause damage to crops, domestic animals, property and human life.
What happens if it does not rain for a long time ?
Lack of rain for a long time makes the soil dry and the level of water in rivers, lakes
and ponds goes down. It may even dry up. This causes drought.
Drought causes shortage of water and food.

Rainwater harvesting :

Collecting rainwater and storing it for future use is called rainwater harvesting.

Rooftop rainwater harvesting : In this method rainwater is collected through

pipes and stored in tanks or sent into a pit in the ground to refill the ground water.

Refilling ground water : The rainwater from roadside drains can be allowed to go
directly into the ground to refill the ground water.

“The amount of usable water on earth is limited so it needs to be used carefully”.
