3. Phonetic description
In each of the following pairs of words, the underlined sounds differ by one or more
phonetic features. State the differences and in addition, state what features they have in

4. Relationships between consonants

If we consider three sounds such as /p/, /t/ and /l/ we could say that /p/ and /t/ are more
alike than either /p/ and /l/ or /t/ and /l/. This is because they share two articulatory
`features' involving voicing, place and manner. This shows up in the following
descriptions:
/p/ voiceless labial stop
/t/ voiceless alveolar stop
/l/ voiced alveolar approximant
In other words, /p/ and /t/ share the features `voiceless' and `stop', whereas /l/ shares only
one feature with /t/ (alveolar) and none with /p/. Given the following triplets, identify the
two features shared by two of the sounds and say how the third one contrasts with respect
to these features. The first answer is given.

(a) /t/, /b/, /m/

/b/ and /m/ are both voiced and labial whereas /t/ is voiceless and
alveolar.
(b) /b/, / k /, /g/,

(c) /s/, / z /, /f/

(d) / l /, / j /, /w/
