STRATEGIC PLAN AND MANAGEMENT ANALYSIS: AWADH COOLPOINT

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Business Data Management Capstone project is a project proposal submitted


as part of the BS in Data Science and Application offered by the IIT Madras. The
project proposal aims to develop a solution to a business problem by using tools
and techniques of data science. The data required for the project will be collected
from Awadh Coolpoint, a grocery store in Varanasi, India.

The main purpose of this project is to identify the inventory mismanagement


areas for improvement in the business by analysing sales, using technology to
automate processes such as mobile apps for payment. The proposal provides a
detailed background to the problem. It details the problem-solving approaches,
data collection methods, and data analysis tools used to solve business problem.

Organizational Background:
Awadh Coolpoint is a grocery store which was established six months ago at
Hyderabad gate of Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India. It was opened as it
has a prime location because near this store students visit many a times. It sells
fresh produce, general range of food products such as dairy, baked goods, cereals,
chocolates, soft drinks, etc.

PROBLEM STATEMENT:

As per the discussion with the owner of Awadh Coolpoint, he is interested in


keeping up with the competition and increasing its market share. Old Stores are
giving a good competition as location is prime and customers don’t care if their is
a Stock shortages, they need their product anyhow from anywhere, so stock have
been a common problem.
PROBLEMS OBJECTIVE
A. Perform a general analysis from sales data in order to find out the average
inventory days.

B. Analyze the company's total revenue and expenditure, and suggest where the
company should make investments to reduce its average inventory days and
maximize its revenue.

C. Offer a useful spreadsheet format for storing the data on sales, purchases, and
expenses.

D. Pricing: Need to price the products competitively while still making a profit.

E. Customer Service: Need to provide excellent customer service to keep


customers coming back.

SOURCE OF DATA:
All data is provided by Mr. Akshat who is the owner of Awadh Coolpoint. Please
find below the screenshot of sales and revenue in paytm merchant for the
authenticity of the data.

METADATA AND DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS:
Sales data was collected for the months of January 2023. Mr. Akshat (Owner of
KBS) and myself sat together couple of times and arranged it in ms excel. This
data is considered as the original received data.

The data collected from sales data is entered into excel sheet as eight columns:

ANALYSIS PROCESS:
The main tool used for this analysis is MS Excel. After entering the raw data into
excel, basic data pre-processing needs to be done like typing errors, sorting etc.
After the data pre-processing the analysis can be started in excel.

The usage of Excel's features is recommended for plotting patterns, building pivot
tables, and drawing insightful conclusions from the data.

The following are the actions taken for the analysis:

 The entered data have eight columns . Data were filtered and taken from 1 st
January to 31st January 2023 for the primary analysis.
 Created a pivot table for day-wise total sales to analyze the trends per day
for the month January .
 Created a pivot table of total sales on weekends and week days.

Since the shop is located in a prime location just outside the gate of the
university, we can see that total sales decreases from 8 January to 13 January
as there is winter vacation, and generally the graph is higher on Saturday and
Sunday because it is a holiday for the students and mess are also closed, so the
sales increases for the shopkeepers for two days every week.

Sales on weekends that is on Saturday and Sunday is higher as compared to other


days of the week. As the shop is small and revenue on weekends are higher we
have to keep more inventories sufficient on that days because if some customer
don’t find any product the he/she will go to the next shop without any hesitate.

WAY FORWARD:
 A detailed analysis regarding sales volume, revenue, inventory
management, profit and other problem objectives needs to be done as part
of the final submission of the project.
 More data of next month will be taken for detailed analysis.

Expected Timeline for final report:


 The analysis will be completed by April 4th 2023.
 Final report completion is targeted by April 6th 2023.
