IV.PROCEDURES

A. ELICIT Review
1. Review about the last topic that has been discussed.

Activity 1: Is it True?
Directions: Identify if the given mathematical statement is true.
1. 6 < 2
2. 5 = 4
3. 2 > 1
4. 3 + 1 = 4
5. 6 = 6

B. ENGAGE Activity 2: Add Me

Directions: Add the following monomial.
1. 3x 4. -y
+ (-x) + (-2y)

2. -y 5. -2w
+ 2y + 2w

3. 2x
+ (-2x)

C. EXPLORE Activity 3: Observe Me

Given: {x−
x+ y=3
y=1

Process:
x+y=3
x-y=1
---------------------
2x = 4
2 2
x=2
x+y=3
2+y=3
y=3-2
y=1
Check:
x+y=3 x-y=1

x+y=3 x-y=1
2+1=3 2-1=1
3=3 1=1

D. EXPLAIN Guide Question:

1. What do you observe in the given example?
2. What is the process involved in finding the value of x and y?
3. Is the value for x and y equal?
Without further ado let me introduce to you the topic for today…

E. ELABORATE Solving Systems of Linear Equations in Two Variables by

Elimination using Addition.

Examples 1

{
x + y=2
2 x− y=4

Solutions:
x+y=2
2x - y = 4
---------------------
3x 6
=
3 3
x=2
x+y=2
2+y=2
y=2-2
y=0

Check:

x+y=2 2x - y = 4

x+y=2 2x - y = 4
2+0=2 2(2) - 0 = 4
2=2 4-0=4
4=4

Examples 2:

{
x+ 2 y =3
−x+ 3 y =7
Solutions:
x + 2y = 3
-x + 3y = 7
---------------------
5 y 10
=
5 5
y=2

x + 2y = 3
x + 2(2) = 3
x+4=3
x=3-4
x = -1
Check:

x + 2y = 3 -x + 3y = 7

x + 2y = 3 -x + 3y = 7
-1 + 2(2) = 3 -(-1) + 3(2) = 7
-1 + 4 = 3 1+6=7
3=3 7=7

Steps in Solving System of Linear Equation by Elimination Method

using Addition.

Step 1: Write the equations in the standard form Ax + By = C.

Step 2: Add the equations to eliminate one variable, and then

solve for the other variable.

Step 3: Substitute the value of the variable that we come up in

either of the equations and solve for the value of the unknown
variable.

Step 4: Check the solution. Substitute the value of x and y

obtained

Practice Exercises:
Directions: Find a pair and using elimination methods by
addition solve the given equation below.

2 x +3 y=15
x−3 y =3
2. {35xx−2
+2 y=15
y=9

3. {x−
x+ y=8
y=2

F. EVALUATE Quiz:
Directions: Solve the following equation by elimination using an
addition method.
1. { x+ y=3
x− y=1

2. { 2 x+ y=5
3 x − y=5

3. {5 x −3 y=12
2 x +3 y=9

4. {2 x− y=7
3 x+ y =8

5. { 2 x+ 4 y =20
−2 x +1 y=5

G. EXTEND Assignment:
