DIAGRAM:
Procedure:
1. The circuit was setup as shown in the diagram above.
2. The nichrome wire was cut into 1-8m portions.
3. The voltage was set to 1.5v and the multimeter to the ohmmeter.
4. The current passing through the ammeter flowing through the circuit was recorded.
5. The resistance of the wires was measured by connecting both ends to the multimeter
probe.
6. The resistance of each wire was recorded in a suitable table.
Results
TABLE SHOWING RESISTANCE AND RESPECTIVE LENGTH OF NICHROME WIRE
Length/cm Resistance/ Voltage(v) Current(I)
1 0.19 1.5 7.89
2 0.38 1.5 3.94
3 0.58 1.5 2.58
4 0.77 1.5 1.94
5 0.94 1.5 1.59
6 1.13 1.5 1.15
7 1.31 1.5 1.14
8 1.49 1.5 1.00
Data Analysis
1. A graph of resistance versus length was plotted.
2. The gradient of a graph was determined.
3. The graph is linear based on the points plotted, because the shape is a straight line
graph which shows proportionality.
4. As the length of the wire increases the resistance also increases.
EXPECTED RESULTS:
Both length and resistance will increase due to the presence of more atoms to oppose the
electrons, so therefore the relationship between the lengths of a wire is proportional to that of
the resistance of a wire.
SOURCE OF ERROR:
1. Parallax error
2. Best accuracy of the measuring instrument
PRECAUTION:
1. Ensure that the polarity of the circuit is correct.
2. Ensure that the connections of circuit are tightly connected.
3. Readings are taken to avoid parallax error.
