Coding Decoding
Introduction
Coding Decoding is an important part of the Logical reasoning section in all aptitude
related examinations. Coding is a process used to encrypt a word or a number in a
particular code or pattern based on some rules. Decoding is a process to decrypt the
pattern into its original form from the given codes.

The Coding and decoding of information are done with various rules or patterns so
that only the right person can decipher it. Coding decoding helps candidates to
improve their logical reasoning skills and ability to focus. When any
letter/word/sentence is written or said so that it hides the actual meaning of that
particular letter/word/sentence from others except the desired person, it is called
Coding. On the other hand, decoding is the process in which any letter/word/sentence
is written or said so that it hides the actual meaning of that particular
letter/word/sentence from others except the desired person.

Types of Coding-Decoding
Let us see the various types of coding-decoding one by one from below.

1) Letter to Letter Coding & Letter to Number Coding

Letter to Letter Coding-Decoding, the alphabets of a word are coded with the help of
different operations such as addition, subtraction, interchanging, and so on.
Candidates need to find the code of another word using the same operations. In Letter
to Number Coding-Decoding, numerical values are assigned to a word or alphabetical
code letters are assigned to the number.

➔ SPACE is Coded as TQBDF


Each letter is replaced with their next letter according to English alphabetical series.

➔ MART is coded as AMRT


All the letters are arranged according to English alphabetical series.

2) Chinese Coding

In this type of coding and decoding, a few statements of the same words but in a
different order will be coded as words or symbols or letters. Candidates need to find
the codes of words by finding the common words in different statements as the code
of a word in both the statements will be the same.

‘Go To Me’ is coded as ‘cb vg lr’

3) LSN Coding

In this type of coding and decoding, words of different statements are coded with
letters, symbols, and numbers using different operations. Candidates need to find the
logic used for letters, symbols, and numbers.
➔ ‘MOTOR ENGINE’ is coded as ‘M@5 E#6’

Tips and Concept


* To solve the Letter-to-Letter coding-decoding questions quickly, candidates must
check if the opposite letters are given in the code. Then candidates need to check if
the position of letters is interchanged. Finally, check if operations like addition or
subtraction are applied.

* To solve the letter to number type coding and decoding questions quickly, candidates
first need to check if the positional values of letters are given in the code. Then check
if the position of positional values of letters are interchanged. Check if the positional
values of letters are reversed alphabetical series. Check if the position of positional
values of letters are interchanged. Finally check if operations like addition, subtraction
or multiplication is applied.
