COMMON WRITTEN EXAMINATION – 2018

Mechatronics Technology
NVQ Level 5 Semester ll Examination
Programmable Logic Controller- D33C001M10
Instructions to Candidates:
1. Answer five (05) questions
2. Commence to answer each question on a fresh page.
Time: 03 hours Total Marks: 100
1. Today Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) s are the most commonly used controller in automated
processes.
a. List the basic components of a PLC with their main function (8marks)
b. List the two most common types of PLC programming devices (4marks)
c. List the standard programming language used with PLCs (3marks)
d. Explain each of the following advantages of a PLC: (5marks)
i. Increased Reliability
ii. Communications Capability
2.
a. Draw a ladder logic diagram for the logic gate circuit is given in figure (10 marks)

b. Design a statement list program for the relay ladder diagram in Figure2 (10 marks)

3.
a. When input A, B and C are closed and either input D or E and F is open, turn ON output X;
otherwise, it should be OFF. Write the ladder logic program needed to implement this system
(assume inputs A, B, C ,D, E and Fare all normally open switches) (12marks)

b. A normally closed pushbutton is connected to a PLC discrete input. Does this mean it must be
represented by a normally closed contact in the ladder logic program? Explain why or why not
(8marks)
4. Counters used in PLCs serve the same function as mechanical counters.
a. List the counters used in PLCs (3marks)
b. What is the range of the count value in PLC’s counters (3marks)
c. Write the most suitable counter type for each of the following
(6 marks)
i. There are 500 parking slots are available in a car parking place. Keep track of the
number of slots available for in the parking area
ii. Total number of water bottle made during one hour in an automated bottle production
line
iii. Keep track of the current number of parts in a stage of a process as they enter and exit

Conveyor
Proximity 1 Processing Unit Proximity 2

d.

A part of a conveyer is shown in figure, concerns keeping track of the net number of parts in
processing unit. The number of parts going on the conveyer is counted by using proximity 01.
The number leaving the conveyor is counted by using proximity 02. Write ladder diagram for
this process. (8 marks)

5.
a. List four important Considerations for Choosing a PLC (4 marks)
b. What do you mean by the scan cycle of a PLC (4 marks)
c. List four factors that enter into the length of the scan time
(4 marks)
d. What is the function of a PLC input interface module? (4 marks)
e. List four common physical quantities measured by a PLC analog input module. (4 marks)

6. A motor and its lubrication pump motor are both running, lubrication for main motor bearing is
required during motor coast- down. After the main motor is shut off, the lubricating pump remains on
for 20 second. Design Ladder programme for the process. (20 marks)
