INTRODUCTION
1.1 Review
Buildings serves several needs of human, primarily as shelter from weather and as
generally living space, to provide privacy, to store belongings and to comfortably live and
work. The construction of buildings is guided by various factor such as building materials
availability, weather condition, land prices, ground conditions, specific uses and aesthetic
reasons. Similarly, there is great influence of civil engineering design building. Structural
Analysis deals with analyzing applied external forces and induced internal forces in the
members of the structures. Structural Design deals with sizing of various members and
material used in the structures to resist the forces to which they are subjected during their
effective life span. Unless the proper Structural Detailing method is adopted the structural
design will be no more effective. The Indian Standard Code of Practice should be thoroughly
adopted for proper analysis, design and detailing with respect to safety, economy, stability
and strength which is accompanied by National Building Code (NBC). The design should be
thoroughly based on Limit State method

In past, the buildings are not properly designed and constructed In context of Nepal so,
due to the earthquake on 2072/01/12, many buildings fell and death of several life only
because of the lack of seismic analysis, design and construction. Generally, earthquake itself
doesn’t kill humans. It can damage building structures if, the building is constructed without
seismic design. We, as a group, will design and analyze the seismic resistant RCC framed
multistoried college building.

This group under the project work has undertaken the structural analysis and design of
multi-storied institutional building. The main aim of the project work under the title is to
acquire knowledge and skill with an emphasis of practical application along with the benefit
for university in construction of the college building. Besides the utilization of analytical
methods and design approaches, exposure and application of various available codes of
practices is another objective of the work.

1.2 Objectives
i. To fulfillment of the requirement of B.E(civil) final year project.
ii. To achieve theoretical as well as practical knowledge to design and analysis of
RCC earthquake resistant building.
iii. Finalize the architectural site layout, plans, elevations, and sections as per
requirement on the basis of codel provision
iv. FEM Modeling of the building in commercially available FE software (eg.
SAP, ETABS) for structural analysis.
v. Design and details of structural components.
vi. Structural detailing of members and the system as per SP 34:1987.
vii. Design of earthquake resistant institution building and Preparation of detailed
estimate and abstract of cost of all the items of works.

1.3 Literature Review

The project report has been prepared in complete conformity with various stipulation in
Indian Standards, Code of practice for plain and reinforced concrete IS 456:2000, Design Aids for
reinforced concrete to IS 456:2000(SP-16), Criteria Earthquake Resistant design structures IS
1893:2016, Ductile detailing of reinforced Concrete Structures subjected to seismic forces- code
of practice IS 13920:1993, Hand book on concrete Reinforcement and Detailing SP-34. Use of
these codes have emphasized on providing adequate safety, Economy, strength and ductility
besides satisfactory serviceability Requirements of cracking and deflection in concrete structures.
These codes are based on principles of Limit State of Design.

To achieve objectives of the project, the following methodology is proposed:
i. Use of Autodesk Auto CAD, for computer aided drawing of the building architecture
ii. Preliminary design for geometry of structural elements
iii. FE Modeling using SAP: 2000 v: 20 for analysis and design of the structures, (beam and
columns) using IS standard
iv. Validating the FE analysis and design using spreadsheet (MS Excel)
v. Designing building footings, slabs and stairs using Spreadsheet (MS Excel)
vi. Preparation of detailed working drawing
vii. Conducting detailed rate and quantity analyses and preparation of cost estimate.
viii. Preparation of project report.

2.1 Design
The objective of design is to achieve a structure that will result in a safe and economical
solution. There are three methods used (/available) for the design:

 Working stress method

 Ultimate load method
 Limit state method

The design is thoroughly based on Limit State method.

The description of the building is described below:

 Building Type : Multistoried institutional building

 Structural System : RCC Frame

 Plinth area covered :

 Type of Foundation : Yet to be determined

 No. of Storey : G+2

 Floor Height : 3m

 Total building height :12m

 Seismic Zone : V (as per IS 1893: part 1:2002)
