INTRODUCTION

Culture-bound and stereotypical words and expressions pose unique challenges in

translation, often requiring translators to navigate cultural nuances and contextual sensitivities
to ensure accurate and meaningful rendition in another language.
This graduation paper delves into the intricacies of translating such linguistic elements,
with a particular focus on the movie "A Bride from the North." Through this analysis, we
explore the complexities inherent in translating cultural-specific references and stereotypes,
examining the strategies employed and the implications for cross-cultural communication
The subject of this graduation paper is the challenges and peculiarities of culture-bound and
stereotypical words and expressions in the translation of the movie “A Bride from the North.”
 The choice of this topic is substantiated by Cultural-specific words and expressions
present a unique challenge in translation. Ensuring that these elements sound natural in
the target language is not only a significant challenge but also an intriguing experience
 “A Bride from the North" has garnered immense popularity not only among
Armenian-speaking audiences but also among the broader USSR population. The
culture-bound words and expressions in the movie have become iconic and are still
referenced today.
 Despite its popularity in Armenian and Russian-speaking countries, the movie has not
been translated into other languages, including English.
Translating cultural elements can be particularly challenging due to the fact that some words or
expressions may not have direct equivalents in the target language, leading to semantic
challenges in translation. Translating culture-bound elements requires a deep understanding of
the cultural context, which may be unfamiliar to the target audience. Culture-bound words and
expressions often carry emotional or expressive connotations that may be difficult to convey
accurately in translation.
This graduation paper aims to accurately convey all culture-bound words and
stereotypical expressions from Armenian into English, preserving their original meaning and
content. The objectives are:
 To analyze the challenges and strategies involved in preserving cultural sensitivity in
the translation of “A Bride from the North”, focusing on the transnational difficulties

3
and peculiarities faced in translating culture-bound words and expressions from
Armenian into English.
 To examine the role of culture-bound words and expressions in the preservation of
cultural authenticity in translation, highlighting their emotional and perceptual nuances
and the importance of maintaining these nuances in the translated text.
 To evaluate the impact of translating culture-bound words and expressions into English
for the target audience's perception, analyzing how these translations affect the ease of
understanding and the cultural authenticity of the translated text.
The theoretical framework for this research is based on the works of Newmark,
Pederson, and Lyudmilova. The paper is structured with an introduction, two chapters
analyzing cultural sensitivity and translation strategies, a detailed analysis of examples from
"The Bride from the North," and a conclusion summarizing the findings.
The introduction presents the subject of the study, the problems and goals, the applied
methods, the scientific innovation, the material and structure of the research.
The first chapter presents the peculiarities of cultural sensitivity, their expression in the
language and translation strategies.
In the Second chapter, based on Newmark’s, Pederson’s and Lyudmilova’s
classifications some examples from “The Bride from the North” are analyzed.
The work is summarized by a conclusion, in which the results and conclusions of the
work are presented.
The bibliography includes primary works used for the research, scientific journals,
dictionaries, Internet sources, and films.

CHAPTER I
PECULIARITIES OF CULTURAL SENSITIVITY, THEIR EXPRESSION IN
LANGUAGE, AND TRANSLATION STRATEGIES

Translation theory has long defined translation as the transfer of ideas from one language
to another. Foster defines translation is a mental activity in which a meaning of given linguistic
discourse is rendered from one language to another. It is the act of transferring the linguistic
entities from one language into their equivalents into another language. Translation is an act
through which the content of a text is transferred from the source language into the target
language (Foster 1958). The original language to known to be source language (SL), whereas
the language to be translated - language (TL). It is believed that the translator needs to have
good knowledge of both the source and the target language, in addition to a high linguistic
sensitivity as he should transmit the writer's intention, original thoughts and opinions in the
translated version as precisely and faithfully as possible.
Due to its prominence, translation has been viewed differently. According to H.Ghazala
(1995), "translation is generally used to refer to all the process and methods used to convey the
meaning of the source language in to the target language".
Translation is a process and a product. According to Catford (1995: 20), translation is the
replacement of textual material in one language (SL) by equivalent textual material in another
language (TL). This definition shows that translation is an active process.
A number of cultural aspects can play a significant role in the translation process. Very
often they are related to the perception of different concepts or stereotypes typical and unique
of only one culture. Thus, different scholars propose different definitions of these cultural
phenomena. Sometimes cultural context can be so unique and culturally bound that translation
fails. Often, they are so specific and sensitive that they require special attention and propose
challenges.
Luts (2017:1) states that "cultural sensitivity is a necessary effort that one makes to
become culturally competent. Once an individual recognizes the importance of cultural
sensitivity, he or she can become culturally competent through the development of specific
skills related to cultural competency.”
In fact, cultural sensitivity involves understanding, and being respectful of different
cultural backgrounds, beliefs, practices, and perspectives. From the perspective of translation

5
cultural sensitivity refers to accurately conveying not just the literal meaning of words and
expressions but also the cultural nuances, context, and implications behind them, stereotypes.
It's about respecting and understanding the cultural differences between languages and
ensuring that translations are not just linguistically accurate but also culturally appropriate.
A specific social category that exists in a source culture in the form of pragmatic
predispositions, namely a socio-cultural stereotype, which has no equivalent notion as well as a
word in translation culture and language, is a lacunar stereotype. The words denoting socio-
cultural stereotypes evoke numerous images, built in accordance with cultural and ethnic
patterns, therefore such stereotypes are almost impossible to preserve in translation language
(Lyubymova 2018).
Conveying cultural sensitivity, stereotypes have been analyzed as an inseparable part of
the modern society. Cultural studies have demonstrated that stereotyping is a fundamental
mechanism of perception and categorization, without which orientation, and indeed survival in
a complex society such as ours would be virtually impossible. However, although we could not
live without stereotypes, there is always a looming danger that stereotypical perceptions can
become crystallized into prejudices (Rieger 2006: 277-278).
Stereotypes reflect the way in which we perceive each other, especially individuals outside
our group” and that can be “the result of ignorance, distorted images, racism, cultural factors
and generalizations based on exaggerations or oversimplifications, and they usually make
reference to cultural aspects such as patterns of behavior and attitudes attributed to different
groups of people” (Gonzalez-Vera 2012: 104-105).
Stereotypes belong to “the set of values, attitudes and behaviors shared by a group and
passed on by learning” (Davies 2003:68). As culturally specific units stereotypes are realized
in symbols, heroes, rituals, and values (Hofstede et al. 2010:7), which appear due to the
specific perception of the world and mental organization of reality in a definite culture.
Complications in translating these culturally specific units caused the idea of their
untranslatability when the translator faces texts with terms, which are as culture-bound and
culture-specific as to defy translation (Guerra 2012). However, the universality of human
language as the system of coding and decoding information, argues the possibility to transmit
specifically cultural codes to different languages. Assuming that “translation is a cross-cultural
communicative act which enables different cultures to interact” (Zhang 2013:19), we admit the
need to understand beliefs, attitudes, values, and the rules of the source language in order to

6
adequately understand the source text and adequately translate it for people who have a
different set of beliefs, attitudes, values, and rules (Firoozkoohi 2010: 1).
The researchers assume that stereotypes can be revealed on all levels of the language. As
subjectively determined idea, a stereotype is reflected on a syntactic level of language, in
forms of judgement about certain features of stereotyped objects (Quasthoff 1978: 28), or it
can be represented by a lexical item that codifies and interprets a category of a social world
(Bartmiński 1995:7). The evidence of a stereotype can also be found in connotations of the
word, that make a stereotype prominent as “social meaning” in a definite context (Coulmas
1981: 14).
A specific social category that exists in a source culture in the form of pragmatic
predispositions, namely sociocultural stereotype, has no equivalent notion as well as a word in
translation culture and language, is considered in our work a lacunar stereotype. The words
denoting sociocultural stereotypes evoke numerous images, built in accordance to cultural and
ethnic patterns, therefore such stereotypes are almost impossible to maintain in translation
language. The uniqueness of such stereotypes is perceived in the process of translation or
cross-cultural communication. A lack of appropriate lexical means in translation language
inevitably leads to some losses in denotative meaning, whereas connotative meaning is not
possible to render adequately because of discrepancy between axiological systems of source
and receiving cultures (Lyubymova 2016).
Formed according to cultural and ethnic patterns, a sociocultural stereotype is largely
found in produced and distributed by the language community implications, which make a
sociocultural stereotype unique and lacunar for translation culture. Lacunarity of such
stereotypes in the interlingual translation is determined by characteristics, which are difficult to
maintain in translation. The parameters that determine lacunarity of a sociocultural stereotype
in the interlingual translation are as following:
1. linguistic, the lack of a corresponding word in lexicographic sources of translation
language.
2. social, the lack of a corresponding social group in the national stratification.
3. historic, absence of social, economic, demographic prerequisites for such grouping.
4. cultural, there are no allusive names and situations connected with the stereotype
(Lyubymova 2016).

7
As mentioned above the cultural sensitivity is usually expressed through cultural
elements such as idioms, culture-bound words and expressions, tone and style and even
the visual elements. Translating cultural expressions often requires understanding the
cultural context to convey the intended meaning properly.
Cultural elements which are specific to one culture and as a rule do not have their
equivalent, a number of scholars (Florin & Vlakhov, Lepihalme, Newmark) propose
different classifications.
Newmark (1988) classifies cultural words as follows:
1) ecology: flora, fauna, hills, winds, plains,
2) material culture: food, clothes, houses and towns, transport,
3) social culture
4) organizations, customs, administrative, religious, artistic, gestures, habits.
For analyzing the stereotypical and cultural words and expressions, Newmark’s
classification will be applied.
Thus, the transfer of culturally specific units, conveying stereotype and cultural
sensitivity requires considerate translation strategies and an adequate competence of a source
culture, the knowledge of cultural specificity, and the ability to notice such items of a culture
in a broader context. Mediation between cultures has to deal with differences and take into
account cultural norms when translating. It is important not only for translation studies but for
the development of intercultural competence, as the culture gaps threaten with
misunderstanding, and, in a broader scale, with inevitable intercultural conflicts. (Liubinienė
2016)
The effort to eliminate the difference between a source and target culture may cause a
cognitive irrelevance that occurs when cultural concepts or notions introduced by a translator
seem incompatible and incongruous for a recipient of the text. Distortion of the message in
way the meaning received by a reader is different from that, which the author intends, creates a
semantic noise. It is caused by social and cultural differences between the sender and the
recipient of the message. To overcome semantic noise is possible by means of feedback, which
is a verbal or nonverbal response of the participants in the process of negotiating ideas and
exchanging meanings to each other (Steinberg 2007: 49-50).

8
To overcome the difficulties of translating cultural words and expressions and the
culturally sensitive elements, numerous classifications of translation strategies have been
proposed. According to Davis they include:
 Preservation, refers to translation using a loan word, when no close equivalent in
the target culture can be found, thus the translator maintains the source text term.
 Localization is a technique in which the references, used by a translator, are known
and familiar to the readers.
 Addition is a technique that provides the original cultural reference, supplemented
to the text by the translator. This additional information might be placed in brackets,
in the endnotes, footnotes, etc., or incorporated in the translated text as part of the
passage.
 Omission, may simply be an act of desperation by a translator who can find no
adequate way of conveying the original meaning.
 Globalization, is the act of replacing a culture-specific unit with a more neutral or
general reference. Occasionally, instead of using cultural references with neutral
connotation, translators aim to “make sure that their translated texts sound as if they
originated in the culture of the target language.
 Transformation, refers to cases where the modification of a culture-specific unit
seems to go beyond globalization or localization and could be seen as an alteration
or distortion on the background of the original text.
 Creation techniques are the invention of the translator. This technique is very rare
and doubtful (Davies 2003: 79-84).
Pedersen, in his turn, proposed six strategies that are classified into ST-oriented strategies
and TT-oriented strategies. The ST-oriented strategies are:
 Retention: it occurs when the culture-bound term is rendered into the target language
completely (complete retention) or slightly adapted (TL-adjusted)
 Specification: it is divided up into addition and completion, and this occurs when the
culture-bound term is left without translation, and it is then indicated by adding more
information. This can happen through explication or addition.

9
 Explication occurs for the purpose of rendering some implicit meaning explicit or
explicating a shortened name or acronym. This can take place in translating acronyms
or names by adding first or last name to clarify the meaning (Pedersen, 2005).
 Addition happens when the translator adds some information that is latent to the ST for
clarification purpose.
 Direct translation: this is used for translating names of institutions and common names
(Pedersen, 2005). It is in a word-for-word translation, which is subdivided into calque
and shifted. Calque is kind of egotism that conveys an intact literal translation.
 Generalization (superordinate term or paraphrase): it occurs when the culture-bound
term is rendered less specifically in the TT than it is in the ST. in other words, the ST
expression is rendered into a more general term.
 Substitution (cultural or situational): it happens when a ST culture-bound term is
replaced by a TT culture-bound term.
 Omission: it happens when the ST culture-bound term is omitted and not rendered to
the TT.
Given that the material under study contains culture-sensitive unites, expressed though the
stereotypes and linguistic means, the strategies proposed by Pedersen will be applied for the
practical analysis.

CHAPTER II
THE ANALYSES OF CULTURE SENSITIVE WORDS AND EXPRESSION IN
THE MOVIE “A BRIDE FROM THE NORTH”

The movie “A Bride From The North” serves as a compelling portrayal of the deep cultural
connections between the Armenian and Russian culture. Through its narrative, the movie
delves into the complexities of both cultures, offering viewers a glimpse into their unique ways
of thinking, habits, and stereotypes. The film provides a rich tapestry of cultural elements,
inviting audiences to explore the nuances of these two distinct yet interconnected cultures.
Through the lens of "A Bride from the North," we are not only entertained but also enlightened
about the cultural complexities and similarities that bind these two nations together.

1. - Մուրա՜դ,Սերո՜բ,Ազա՜տ, ոսկի ա ոսկի՜:

- Murad! Serob! Azat! She’s a diamond, a real diamond!
The above-mentioned example is extracted from the scene where the future mother-in-law
sees her future daughter-in-law for the first time. Here, at the visual level we come across a
stereotype, as the character sees her daughter-in-law smilingly laying a table, which triggers
her using the culture-bound expression “ոսկի ա”. In the given example the expression, being
used to describe a girl, has a metaphorical connotation of a person who is admirable, beautiful,
tidy and basically a person with positive virtue. The expression can be classified under the
category of cultural habits given its specificity and uniqueness. From the perspective of
translation, the expression “she’s a diamond” is applied to render the same cultural nuance
and contextual meaning. In the given example substitution translation strategy is applied as
the same meaning is preserved in the target English language.

2. -Ազատ,ախր տրաքվումա է՜
-Տենցա,կդիմանաս։Սառը լավա։
-Azat, my heart will burst.
-Well, that’s how it is, live with it …cold is good.

In this example the son sends a telegram to his family informing them that he has found a
future-bride and is going to marry her. Being a typical Armenian mother, Mrs. Arus expresses
concern and is anxious about the situation. Given that none of them has seen the girl before
11
and she has another nationality makes her worry about her son’s future even more. To express
the worry, a culture bound expression “ախր տրաքվումա է՜” is used. The expression is used to
indicate that the woman is heartbroken and she is having the feeling that it might explode. To
give the same meaning of intense feeling the expression is rendered with the use of
substitution translation strategy as “my heart will burst”.

3. - Հոր կտորն ա էլի,ասա շան լակոտ,որ առանց մեզ “վսյո րեշենո”,վերցրու բեր էլի,էլ
ի՞նչ ես մեզ կանչում։
- Just like father, you son of a bitch, if “vse resheno” without us there, bring her here,
why do you need us there?

In the given example, Murad, Artak’s father, is expressing his displeasure due to an
earlier received telegram from Artak. In the letter, Artak stated that “վսյո րեշենո” and urged
his parents to fly there to give their blessing. Mr. Murad is a bit offended from Artak’s “всё
решено” and he calls Artak “շան լակոտ”. As Artak was supposed to ask his parent’s
approval and blessing before everything could be decided due to the Armenian tradition. The
expression “շան լակոտ” is an Armenian specific culture-bound expression, which is used as
a form of contempt. . As a culture-bound word, the expression lies under the social category.
Given that the expression is wildly used in other languages and cultures, it is rendered as “son
of a bitch” through substitution translation strategy.
In the same passage Mr. Murad goes on with “որ առանց մեզ “վսյո րեշենո”, վերցրու
բեր էլի” Here we have an expression “всё решено”, which is used in Russian to emphasize the
seriousness of the situation. The expression stands for “everything is decided”. His citing
Artak has a bit of mockery in it, firstly due to the use of the Russian expression and through
the repetition. Thought the retention strategy and the expression is domesticated to preserve
the same cultural stereotype and stylistics coloring.

4. -Այ մարդ,գիտես,որ քեռիդ աշխարհ տեսած մարդ ա,մի էտ աղջկա նկարն ուղարկի
տես՝ինչ ա ասում։ Ուրիշները որտեղից որտեղ մարդ են մեջ գցում, որ հետս խորհուրդ
անեն,սրա համար հեչ ենք…

-I mean, you know your uncle has been around, send a photo of the girl to get my

12
advice, how many people move heaven and earth to ask for my advice while he behaved as if
his uncle doesn’t even exist.
In this particular scene, Serob, Artak's uncle, seems somewhat offended. He expressed
it through the expression, “Այ մարդ, գիտես, որ քեռիդ աշխարհ տեսած մարդա”, with the
emphasis on the culture bound expression “Այ մարդ” which is a casual form of address
predominantly for men and in some cases for women as well. Literal translation would not
make sense in the target language, given the specificity of the cultural expression. The
expression falls into the social culture category of culture bound words. Due to the
untranslatability of the original expression, the explicitation strategy to translate it into
English is applied and the expression is rendered with “I mean” in order it to make sense for
the target English audience.
In the next line the speaker goes on with “գիտես, որ քեռիդ աշխարհ տեսած մարդա”,
a culture-bound expression with stereotypical connotation, meaning that the person has
experienced a lot, traveled extensively, and gained wisdom from life's experiences. The
expression can be classified under the social culture category as it highlights the person’s role
in the society. The expression was translated into the target English language as a person who
“has been around” through the situational substitution strategy, given that in this specific
situation the chosen version renders the stylistic coloring and contextual meaning.
The following example is a specific Armenian stereotypical culture-bound expression
"մարդ մեջ գցել" which reflects a tendency to always try to find a relative to expedite tasks
more efficiently through nepotism. The expression falls into the category social culture. To
express the same cultural meaning and stylistic coloring, the substitution strategy is applied to
replace the specific stereotypical expression with the one used in the target language “move
heaven and earth” meaning to do everything possible to achieve something.

5. - Երվանդը լեզվից լավ ա, գոնե նրան տարեք։

-Yervand is eloquent, at least take him.

As illustrated Azat is expressing his opinion of taking Yervand to Russia given that he
is a French teacher and has good language skills. He uses a stereotypical expression “լեզվից
լավա” trying to tell that he is a teacher and, based on that, is good at expressing himself. The
above mentioned example is a linguistic stereotype lacking it’s exact equivalent in English. In

13
the Armenian language the social culture expression“լեզվից լավ ա” means that a person is
well-developed and he/she has a strong aptitude for learning and mastering foreign languages.
Through the situation substitution strategy, the word ”eloquent” is used though on one hand
it expresses the meaning of the original Armenian expression, while on the other hand does
not fully convey the stylistic coloring.

6. - Դե,աչքներդ լույս,առաջացեք,համեցեք,նստեցեք։
- Let’s sit down. Come here. Congrats!

As illustrated the comrade Shakaryan invites everyone to sit down and congratulates them for
upcoming wedding using an Armenian culture-bound expression “աչքներդ լույս” word for
word translation would be “may your eyes be enlighten“ but it expresses the meaning of praise
for an achievement or good wishes on a special occasion. The expression can be classified
under social custom classification providing the uniqueness of the expression. In the given
example the strategy used to translate is cultural substitution as the expression “Congrats” in
the TL is chosen to fully convey the original meaning of the Armenian expression “աչքներդ
լույս” .

7. -Ես ամաչե՞մ։Ուրեմն Երվանդը,ջութակ-մութակ քոքելով,ոտանավոր

կարդալով,պտի գնա,իսկ Սերոբը,որ էս խելքի տերնա չպիտի գնա,հա՞:
- I don’t need to show anything? You mean, Yervand is going as he can play his violin-
shmiolin and recite fancy poems, and Serob should stay and keep quiet, that’s what you are
saying?

In this particular case, Serob is deeply distressed. In his speech, he is articulating his
dissatisfaction by incorporating some specific Armenian stereotypical expressions such as
"ջութակ-մութակ քոքելով” which serves as a compelling illustration of how certain artistic
abilities are undervalued by a segment of the population, particularly concerning males. Serob
contends that Yervand's skills in singing, playing the violin, and composing poems are not
sufficient qualifications to elevate someone as a representative of the social group.
This case exemplifies stereotypical thinking among the Armenian population, falling
within the social stereotype groups. The primary translation technique employed here is

14
cultural substitution, as we have succeeded to employ the TS stereotypical term to translate
the original Armenian one.

8. -Տո,ա լա մեզոն,դու սեղան նստո՞ղ ես,դու կենաց ասո՞ղ ես,բա ինձ չե՞ն ասի “էս ու՞մ
ես բերել,էս ո՞վ ա”:
- You, “A la maison”, are not someone to share a table with, not a man to say a
toast... won't they tell me, whom did you bring?

In this scene, Serob continues his expression of concern regarding taking Yervand to
Russia. He adopts a somewhat mocking tone by referring to him as an "ա լա մեզոն," a French
term that translates to "at home" in English. Serob employs this term as a mockery ,
particularly aimed at Yervand, who is a French teacher and that is the only expression Serib
knows. What Serob is attempting to convey with "a la maison" reflects stereotypical thinking
that assumes when a person is a teacher, he is expected to be unsuitable for socializing or
partying.
This particular example falls into the linguistic category of stereotypical words. The
expression "A la maison" is transliterated and through the retention strategy the French
phrase is kept intact in the target text.
Serob further emphasizes the ability to gather around the table and make a toast, ”ու
սեղան նստո՞ղ ես,դու կենաց ասո՞ղ ես” a skill he implies he excels at. In this case, an
Armenian stereotypical expression is deployed, suggesting that a person in the teaching
profession is supposed to distance himself from social gatherings, aligning more with an
aristocratic lifestyle that supposedly excludes such activities. This example aligns with the
social stereotype groups. The cultural substitution strategy has been used to translate the
expressions into English. The expressions "share a table with" and "say a toast" are idiomatic
in English and convey the intended meaning in a culturally relevant way.

9. -Ուզում եք էս ուրախ օրը բերանս բաց անե՞լ։Հարկավոր է

պատվով,հարգանքով,մարդավարի,հաշտ ու համերաշխ, իրար ջան կասեք ջան կլսեք:

- Do you want me to open my mouth on this joyous day? We need to honor, show
respect, humaneness, peace and solidarity... you will speak to each other with respect and
love, you will listen carefully...

15
In this particular example,Mr. Shakaryan is using a word “մարդավարի” which
translated from Armenian would be “human-like”.The usage of the particular word among
Armenians expresses a behaviour a social person is supposed to have,so it is a culture-bound
word which has a stereotypical background in it.It expresses the idea of a social person to
know how to behave in every occasion and always has a sense of politeness in it.As a culture-
bound word, the example lies under the social category of culture-bound words. The translation
used in the example is retention.
Moving on to the second part of the statement, Comrade Shakaryan issues a
recommendation: "Հարկավոր է պատվով, հարգանքով, մարդավարի, հաշտ ու համերաշխ,
իրար ջան կասեք ջան կլսեք" . The distinctive Armenian term "ջան" ("jan") is used here.
"ջան ասել ջան լսել" is an idiomatic expression meaning to respect and value someone. . It
conveys warmth and closeness in relationships.
This example falls under the category of social culture, showcasing linguistic and cultural
expressions in interpersonal communication that reflect specific aspects of social interaction
within Armenian culture. Cultural substitution is used while translating "ջան կասեք ջան
կլսեք" as "you will speak to each other with respect and love”preserving the same meaning
and style.

10. -Մաման քեզ մատաղ, ո՞նց ես ազիզ ջան։

-My love, I’d sacrifice my life for you, how are you my son?

The provided example illustrates a mother conveying her boundless love to her son and
inquiring about his well-being using a culture-bound Armenian expression. The culture-bound
phrase "Մաման քեզ մատաղ" is used in the Armenian language to express love and
selflessness.
The example falls under the category of social culture. It highlights the specific form of
affectionate care that Armenian mothers often express, particularly towards their sons.
Through the use of explication strategy the expression is translated as “May my life be
sacrificed for yours” given that no equivalent can be found in the target language,
The mother complements this expression with another phrase, "ազիզ ջան", which falls
within the category of endearing terms Armenians use for their loved ones. "Aziz" is an Arabic
term conveying a sense of endearment and preciousness, often used to express deep affection.

16
This example falls within the realm of social culture, showcasing how language and
expressions convey specific cultural values and norms, particularly within the context of
familial relationships in Armenian culture. Specification strategy is used in the example, as
the expression “ազիզ ջան” is translated as “my son” to partially convey the meaning of the
culture-bound word given that it does not have an exact translation in English.

11. -Ասա աչք խփած կա՞մ։

- Ձեզ լուրջ պահեք։
-Ինչի՞:
-Կարող է պատահի՝մեզ հետևում են։
-I did not sleep a wink all night.
-Behave yourselves.
-Why!
-We might be spied on.

The following example portrays a situation where Serob complains about not getting any
sleep the previous night, using an Armenian culture-bound expression, "Ասա աչք խփած
կա՞մ". which conveys the idea of not getting any sleep, even for a brief moment. This culture
bound expression falls under the social culture category of culture bound words. Cultural
Substitution is used while translating, where expressions "աչք խփած" is translated into "did
not sleep a wink," preserving its idiomatic connotation in English.
In response, Murad advises, "Ձեզ լուրջ պահեք", reflecting a specific Armenian mindset
that emphasizes always presenting oneself in the best possible way, especially in a foreign
society. Murad later explains that the reason for emphasizing proper behavior is the slight
possibility that “Կարող է պատահի՝մեզ հետևում են։” This reflects a stereotypical insecurity
of individuals entering a new social group, fearing even minor things.
This example falls under a social stereotype group, with potential connections to
historical stereotypes as well. These elements contribute to a shared understanding within a
particular social group, making them part of the social stereotype framework. The translation
strategy used in this example is cultural substitution, as by “We might be spied on” we have
managed to convey the meaning of the expression in the English

17
12. - Ասի,ասի.”Վալյա ջան,մորդ ուշանալը սրտովս չի”:
-Լավ ես ասել։
-I told her, I said “I don’t appreciate your mom being this late”.
- To the point.

The statement "մորդ ուշանալը սրտովս չի" conveys a direct disapproval of someone's
tardiness. Mrs. Arus Is talking to his husband and letting him know that she had expressed her
thought, which Mr. Murad also shares to their daughter-in-law. She has used a Armenian
specific culture-bound expression “սրտովս չի” which means to someone’s liking. It is in the
social culture category of culture-bound words. The expression is translated into English as “I
don’t appreciate” with the help of cultural substitution to preserve the same contextual
meaning and style.

13. - Եղբայր, չհասկացա՞ք այդ մարդուն։Նիկոլայը ազնիվ է,պարկեշտ,առաքինի,սակայն

առանց տիկնոջ ձայնազուրկ մարդ է։
- Brothers, don’t you understand that man. He is honest, decent, virtuous…but without his
wife he has no say.

In the provided example, Yervand is describing Valya’s father. He wants to say that
although he is a decent man he is unable to make a decision without his wife. The expression
"without his wife he has no say" reflects a cultural stereotype or expectation about the role of
a man and his dependence on his wife. It shows us an example of a stereotype where Armenian
people think that in Russian household men usually have less impact on decision making than
women do, especially comparing to Armenian households where the decision maker is always
the man. This falls under the social category, indicating a specific expectation within the
societal structure. The phrase "he has no say" captures the essence of lacking the right to
speak, even though it may not be a literal translation to “ձայնազուրկ մարդ է». Cultural
substitution has been used to convey the intended meaning in English.

14. -Բա կոստյումս չհագնե՞մ։

-Սերոբ, քեզի կոստյումն է, որ պիտի զարդարե։

18
-Wait, I need to take my suit?
-Serob, you are handsome regardless the suit.

In the provided example, we come across the most famous expression from the given
movie. Serob wants to take the suit that he had brought in his hands all the way along from
Armenia to Russia for the main event. As long as they are in a hurry, Yervand uses a
compliment in order to have Serob on the way faster, so he says “-Սերոբ,քեզի կոստյումն է,որ
պիտի զարդարե։“
The interaction involves a more casual and situational stereotypical expression related
to linguistic, social aspects. It's a friendly exchange where Yervand is making a light-hearted
comment about Serob's appearance, emphasizing that he looks good regardless of the suit. The
translation technique used in the sentence is explication, as while translating “քեզի կոստյումն
է,որ պիտի զարդարե։” is translated into English as “you are handsome regardless the suit”
giving the main meaning to the English language audience.

15 -Արուս,էս ու՞ր են առավոտ գիշերով կորել,հը՞:

-Եսիմ,Սերոբն ասեց գնում են ձուկ բռնելու։
-Ձուկ բռնելու՞։Ասա դուք ո՞ր օրվա ձուկ բռնողն եք,հը՞։Լոպազ շան որդիք։

-Arus, where did they go in these early hours of the morning?

-I am not sure. Serob said they’re going fishing.
-Fishing? Look at them as if they know how it is done. Arrogant bustards.

In the given example, the conversation revolves around the characters' plans to go
fishing early in the morning. After asking Arus about the guys missing, Murad is expressing
his thought of them fishing. The expression “Լոպազ շան որդիք” contains a stereotypical
expression. The expression preceding the culture-bound expression falls under a cultural
stereotype where the speaker expresses a negative opinion about the people going fishing,
implying that they may not be as skilled or knowledgeable as they appear. The derogatory
language adds a judgmental tone to the statement, reflecting a cultural aspect of expressing
disapproval or frustration. In order to convey the whole emotional pattern around the used
expression, cultural substitution has been used to translate the expression in English as

19
“arrogant bastards”, through the word bastard fully renders the same meaning and along with
sons of bitches can be considered as exact equivalents, the choice of the word “arrogant” is
situational, given that in this specific example it highlights the speaker’s opinion of his
brother-in low.

16. -Մուրադը եկավ։

-Առաջինը Սերոբին եմ մորթելու։
-Բարբարոս։
-Թու,բախտ բաժանող։
-Ուրեմն էտ լակոտը հեր չունի՞, մենք հե՞չ։

-Murad is coming.
-I will slaughter Serob first.
-Barbarossa!
-Damn it!
-So that guy doesn’t have a dad? We’re no one to him?

In the above-mentioned example, we come across the expression “Թու, բախտ

բաժանող։ Բախտ բաժանող” is an Armenian expression which, shows an Armenian
stereotypical way of thinking that when something bad happens, Armenians think that the bad
things are only happening to them and they also believe that some people have more luck than
the others. This example falls under linguistic category of stereotypes, as we lack word by
word translation from Armenian to English. Situational Substitution has been used to
translate the expression into English as “damn it” to preserve the contextual meaning and
emotions of the speakers.

17. -Մուրադ։Վա՜յ մամա ջան,չկատաղես։

-Murad! Oh, no! Please, don’t burst with anger.

In this scene Murad is asked a few times in the movie not to “get burst” with anger, we
can assume that it was something he was notorious for. In this particular scene Arus, Murad’s
wife, is worried and she expressed it with an Armenian culture-bound word “Վա՜յ մամա ջան”.
which lies under custom category. It is used as an exclamation of excitement, anger, fear or

20
regret. In this passage the exclamation is used to express fear and aimed at expressing the same
emotions, situational substitution is applied and the expression is rendered with an English
language explamation “Oh, no” expressing fear and regret. It’s worth mentioning that the
famous Armenian word “ջան” is omitted given the nature of the chosen English exclamation.

18. -Հանգիստ եմ։Լսի լսի,ուրեմն ես՝Փարսադանի տղա Մուրդաս,գամ հասնեմ էստեղ ու

ինձ ասեն нет՞,ես ձեզ ցույց կտամ։
-I am calm. Listen up! I, Murad, son of Parsadan, came here to hear a Nyet? I will
show you.

In the provided example, Murad expresses considerable frustration because the bride's
family refused to allow their daughter to marry Artak due to the secret marriage certificate.
Murad employs a distinctly Armenian stereotype, saying, “ուրեմն ես՝Փարսադանի տղա
Մուրդաս, գամ հասնեմ էստեղ ու ինձ ասեն нет”.The stereotype implies that if a person's
father was a respected individual, then the person, in turn, should never face rejection. This
example also underscores the deep respect Armenians hold for their ancestors, suggesting that
a rejection to an individual brings shame to the entire family. The example falls under social
category of stereotypes. Retention is the translating strategy used for the translation of the
name. Towards the end of the statement, Murad directly quotes the in-laws' rejection with a
simple "nyet" (no). There is a subtle element of mockery in Murad's tone, directed at their
behavior and language. Retention translation strategy is used in the example, in order to keep
the emotions of the speaker and the word is transliterated in its Russian form.

19. -Երվանդ,Սերոբ,այ տղա մի վեր կացեք էն էրեխեքին գտեք է՜։Քոռանամ ես,էրեխեքիս

գլխին փորձանք բերին։
-Նենց էլ անդարդ քնել են,ոնց որ մեղավորը ես եմ։

-Yervand, Serob, wake up, children are missing and go find them. Heavens, they put
my poor kids in danger.
- They are sleeping like a log as if I am the one to be blamed.
In this example Arus is asking Yervand and Serob to go and find Artak and Valya who
were missing from the the day before. She uses an expression “Քոռանամ ես” which shows
Armenian mother’s self-sacrifice, the expression means that even if I get blind and my

21
children are fine then let it be that way.In English the expression is translated as “Heavens”
through cultural substation strategy as there is this praying connotation in Arus’s speech as
well. The example can be marked as an example of social culture-bound word.
Moving on we witness Azat complaining about the “criminals” sleeping like a log, sleeping
very well. The very exact word that he uses in Armenian is “անդարդ” which literally means
not having any kind of worry.Translating it into English as “sleeping like a log” Situational
substitution has been used,Armenian culture-bound expression has been translated with an
English one.The expression falls under the social category of culture-bound words.

20. -Ну,прошу,милости просим. Но ведь это правда конечно,что мужик у нас хозяин
дома,но с другой стороны это как посмотреть.
-Please, you're welcome, but it's true that the man is the head of the household, but on
the other hand, it depends on how you look at it.

The given example involves a conversational exchange that touches upon gender roles
and the perception of a man's role as the head of the household at a Russian household. The
speaker acknowledges the traditional view that "мужик" (man) is the master of the house. .
The expression "мужик у нас хозяин дома" reflects a cultural element tied to traditional
gender roles. This concept is a stereotypical one and it lies under the social category of
stereotypes.Direct translation has been used to translate the example. “мужик у нас хозяин
дома” as “the man is the head of the household” in order to make it clearer for the target
audience, however the word “хозяин» (master) is substituted by the word “head” in the
English language to preserve the naturalness of the passage.

21. -Мурат.Лаской от животного всего добьёшься.

-Murad. Caring for an animal will move mountains.

The given example involves a statement about the efficacy of showing affection or care
towards an animal. Mrs. Arus is using the expression "Мурат. Лаской от животного всего
добьёшься," sentence to highlight her knowledge about the animal keeping and the wisdom
for her age. Cultural Substitution has been used to translate the stereotypical expression into
“move mountains”, which does not only render the same contextual meaning but adds

22
idiomatic expression in the target translation. The example falls under the social category of
Stereotypes.

22. -Я хочу сказать,что я мужчина в доме,а вопрос дочери -это дело женское,Вот
как приедет Наталья я своё мужское слово скажу. А то как же.
-Ладно,не горячись Николай джан.
-All I want to say is that I am the man at our household but the matters related to my
daughter are a woman’s duty of care. As Natalya comes back I’ll say my man’s word.
-No problem, calm down dear Nikolay.
In the provided example, there is a cultural aspect related to gender roles and family
dynamics. Nikolay saying “вопрос дочери это дело женское is justifying his disability to
provide a solid answer about her daughter’s marriage and having to wait for his spouse to
come back using a stereotypical expression, which here revolves around traditional gender
roles within a family. The speaker emphasizes that certain matters, particularly those related to
the daughter, are considered a woman's duty of care. So, based on the provided criteria, the
expression is more aligned with a social stereotype as the speaker expresses the expectation
that certain responsibilities are assigned based on gender, indicating a cultural aspect related to
social norms and family dynamics. With the help of Situational Substitution the phrase "дело
женское" is translated as "a woman’s duty of care,".We have replaced the culturally specific
term with an expression more familiar and understandable in English.

23. -Артак мировой парень.Хорошо поёт. Здравствуйте.

-Здравствуйте
-էտ ո՞վ էր։
-Չճանաչեցի՝գլխին բան կար։
-And Artak is a good guy, and how well he sings. Hello.
-Hello.
-Who’s that?
-She had something on her head, couldn’t recognize

In this example a woman from Artak’s beloved’s neighborhood is telling that Artak is
loved among them. She specifies that Artak is a peaceful guy, not only, he also sings well. As
they are in a barbershop, the woman has a special tool on her head which is for styling her hair.

23
When she talks about Artak, Serob opens the curtain to see who is talking. Murad asks “Who’s
that?”. This example shows us a stereotypical way of thinking as someone who comes from a
village to recognize everyone on the surroundings. And the question “Who’s that?” sounds so
natural to Serob that he does not even get surprised. The stereotype falls under the cultural
stereotype group. With the help of direct translation the word-for word translation is
provided which covers the contextual and stereotypical meaning.
Analyzing all the examples from the script translated from Armenian/Russian into
English, it is evident that there are 29 culture-bound words/expressions and stereotypical
expressions: 14 of them are stereotypical, while the remaining 15 are culture-bound words and
expressions. Out of these 29 examples, 20 have been translated using the Substitution strategy,
11 are situational, and 9 are cultural substitutions. The Explication strategy was used in 3
examples, as well as the Retention strategy. Two examples were translated via Direct
translation, and only one through specification.
From translated 15 Culture-bound words and expressions, 12 are classified under social
culture group, and 3 lie under cultural habits/customs separated by Newmark.

24
CONCLUSION

By studying the transnational difficulties and peculiarities in the preservation of cultural

sensitivity in the translation of “A Bride from the North”, as well as comparing stereotypical
and culture-bound words and expressions in the Armenian and English languages, we can
come to the following conclusion:
 The study highlights the intricate nature of cultural-specific elements in language,
demonstrating the challenges of accurately translating them into another language while
maintaining their cultural context.
 As a result of the analysis, we can state that cultural sensitivity and stylistic tone were
preserved in each of the 29 examples given.
 This research emphasizes the importance of preserving the cultural authenticity and
richness of source texts in translation, ensuring that the translated text retains the
specific flavor and nuances of the original.
 In most of the cases cultural or stereotypical expressions, the expression is replaced by
another cultural expression, which is being used by the target audience.
 When analyzing the examples from the movie 'A Bride from the North,' the original
meaning of an expression and its purpose as used in the movie have been translated to
convey the entire meaning and the speaker's intentions in all cases.
 In the analysis, one of the strategies proposed by Pederson that was used most often is
substitution (20 examples). Overall, out of 29 outlined examples, 2 were translated via
direct translation, 3 were explicated, and in 3 examples, retention was used; only one
example was specified.

APPENDIX 2

A bride from the North

-Azat,Azat,come here please,a telegram from Artak has arrived,I don’t understand anything,go
call Murad and stuff.
-What did he wrote?.Let me see.
-That’s none of your business,go call them
-Oh! Shouldn’t I know what he wrote?
-You’ll know,go call them.
-Alright,I am going.Artak again brought something upon his head…
*
-Yervand come,come,something has happened.
-What happened?
-A telegram from Artak has arrived,Arus is calling (you).
-Hmm,you go tell Murad and Serob,I’ll go right after finishing my class.
-That’s what I am doing.
*
-Serob ! Serob!
-Yeah,what’s up?
-Serob come,something has happened.
-Put it on the scale, I'm coming back soon.
-What’s wrong ?(?)
-You think I know?An ambiguous telegram has arrived from Artak,Arus is calling you
immediatly.
-Oh !
-Yup
-Damn it!Did you hear?A telegram has arrived from Artak,Arus is calling I have to go.
*
-Azat,what happened?
-I have no idea,Arus is calling.
-He doesn’t know, they’re calling me to clear it out.

55
-Artak was demobilized, wasn't he?
-He was and is missing now…take it away.Come on!
-Arus is crying.
-You’re an uncle,Didn’t you know what that puppy wrote?
-How can you know until you know it for sure.
*
-Hold it straight!
-I am holding.
-Don’t loose it yet.
-Alright.
-It turns out ?
-Usually it does but it wasn’t worth doing it today probably.
-I know what I am doing.
-Alright,you know (?)
*
-Again a concert by request?
-Turn it on.
-I will but I.m afraid it won’t help.
-Listen,do what you are told to do.
*
-Any news?
-They say she locked herself in her room.
-How could she resist coming out after hearing my song?
-Come on
*
-Valya …take this, eat a bit.I'll put the question bluntly today, please endure by then.
-Alright.
*

-Good evening.
-Hello Vanya.
-When are you leaving Natalya?

56
-Tomorrow,in the morning.
-Where’s Valya ?
-Vanya:shsh
- Having the results of our team's long-term experience at hand, we can make a decision…
- I'm measuring one more time, keep your hand straight.
-Where’s Valya. This case must be discussed one more time.
-At this house, the issues are solved by me!Leave it Marfa.
- Put on your heels, Natalya, I'm measuring the length.
- Measure... I won't go there.
- You have no heart... The mother decided to starve her daughter before leaving.
- The girl has not taken anything in her mouth for two days.
- She even refused water today.
- Heartless…
- Let her not scare me with her hunger strike.
- Valentina, open the door to your parents, do you hear me?, answer right now... Valentina,
open the door, your parents demand it!
- Valechka, my dear, eat something and then do whatever you want.
-What do you say?
-Nothing.
- Listen.
- Maybe the poor girl lost her mind.
- OK, I will go to the military commissar.
-He, Natashenka, no longer obeys the military commissariat, he is mobilized
- Open, I say, I need my shoes... I'm going to a meeting tomorrow.
*Song*
- Well, tell us, what's up?
- Artak have to leave you, my mother will complain in the council.
- Come live with us.
- She says that she will write about your parents in the newspaper and, in general, she will keep
complaining.
- What?
-Yes...

57
- That’s because she doesn't know my father.
- What if you go to Armenia with Artak and be done with it, what do you say?
- What are you talking about? Mother will have a heart attack, and what if one of your parents
come?
-They already got my telegram.
- Watch out! take this.
*
- Where did they go?
- Is ever catching up with them?
- Well, look at them.
-Alright.
- Come on Let’s go.
*
- You are all kind and I'm the only monster among you.
- Of course you are, not a soul has seen a person running after a boy with a stick in her hand?
- I looked after him better than her mother would, I took care of him as my own when he was
sick.
- Took care.
- I made Мedovukha specially for him.
- You did.
- What a wily fox!) Natalie Simeonaya, I respect you so much, your word is a law for me
- Did he betray your trust?
- He did. Oh, Natalie Simeonaya, I will not take Valya from you... and where is he taking her
now?,,,3,000 versts beyond.
- Let it happen, Natalya.
-God forbid what if something happens: she is there, we are here... not even mentioning that
there are always earthquakes in those mountains.
- Well, end it, Natalya, it has been a tradition from time immemorial that a girl goes to a
man’s house, that's the order.
- I’ll show you an order, I will establish a new order.
- And your laws are approved in the Code?
- I have my own code... please, I will give the house, the garden, the pigs, everything.

58
- What about the chickens, will you keep the chickens to yourself.
- Vanya, Vanya do not dare.
- I don’t appreciate jokes on this topic, Ivan.
- Appreciate it or not, you will dance on a Russian-Armenian wedding.
- Over my dead body, do you hear me, over my dead body!
*
-Azat, my heart will explode..
-Well, that’s how it is, live with it …cold is good.
-Oh my dream came true ..oh!
-just like father, you son of bitch, if everything is ‘resheno” without us there, bring her here,
why do you need us there.
-How can he take her here like that, shouldn’t we first see if she is, beautiful or well-behaved.
-I mean, you know your uncle has been around , send a photo of the girl to get my advice, how
many people find intermediates to ask for my advice while he behaved as if his uncle doesn’t
even exist. It hurts my feelings / my heart explodes.
-I don’t know why you’re hurt, the person has clearly written “Dear Father, dear mother, Valya
agrees, everything is decided between us,
- That’s the thing
-Please come and bless our unity”…what advise do you want to give?
-Where the hack is Shakaryan? We need to come to a decision.
-Murad jan, haven’t you made up your mind how many of us should go?
-What is there to decide, I will go will take them and bring back here, that's it.
-What about Madame/Mrs. Arusyak?
-When I say I, it means Arusyak is with me.
-Eh, nothing is left of Arus!
-What? So, you’ll leave me behind?
-If you don’t mind, Murad jan,I would like to come too, also I had fought in those territories,
the guys from my battalion will be very happy to see me.
-Man, it’s just a day? I will be there in the morning, will take them and by the evening will
come here.
-There should be at least couple of people from the bride’s side, that’s how it’s law.
-We have though it over.

59
-Yervand is eloquent, at least take him.
-Fine, if I am not worthy of going, then good luck to you. I know only one thing for sure, an
intelligent person is needed to tackle this issue, that’s all I’ve to say. What if Artak asks
“Where’s my uncle?”.
-He won’t dare, don’t worry.
-Murad, think it over, there is no harm in my coming.
-I have already thought.
-Shakaryan is coming.
-Hello Gurgen!
-Hello Murad.
-Hello Yervand.
-Hello.
-Hello Arus,
-Did you see, Gurgen jan, what happened?(crying)
*Calm down,calm down*
-Hello Serob.
-Let’s sit down. Come here. Congrats. -Here’s the telegram.
-Well, now it’s clear. So, what did you do? Serob report.
- let the ones going report.
-Serob is a bit upset…
- Gurgen jan, all of them volunteered to come, and I am like, man, why are you coming in the
midst of the harvest time, , huh?
- To tell the truth, we also had something like a meeting and decided that our Murad’s going
to Yavronomka is not only a matter of Murad's honor, but, I’d dare say, it is a matter of the
honor of our entire village.
- Did you hear that?
- Based on the circumstances, we decided that apart from the parents, Azat you will also go, as
someone who has fought there.
-Thank you.
- You, Yervand, as a representative of the rural intelligentsia.
-Merci.
-Sit down.

60
-The number is more than enough.
-Arus, I am leaving.
- Serob, come back... Show some respect to Comrade Shakaryan.
- I don’t need to show anything? You mean, Yervand is going as he can play his violin-
shmiolin and recite fancy poems, and Serob should stay and keep quiet, that’s what you are
saying?
- I'm against that decision, I'm very against it, how come, my brother won't come?
- Don't talk, it's none of your business.
-Wait a bit.
*noise*
- Listen to me, Serob will also come, as a man who has been around, so that you don't get lost
on the roads, are you satisfied?
- So, you mran Murad can go on a journey, Serob should be there to take me? Hey... At the
time, when Murad put Makhachkala, Vladikavkaz under his feet, where was Serob, huh?
- Let's say it's true again.
- Excuse me, Comrade Shakaryan, I'm extremely honored for the high trust shown towards me,
but unfortunately I refuse to go.
- What happened to you, man?
- To be honest, an adult person who shows such disrespect towards the most noble instrument
=the violin, I cannot go on a journey with that kind of person.
- Well, don't come, then,.
- In that case I will come in spite you.
- Yervand, take it easy, it doesn’t suit you.
- I'm sorry, Comrade Shakaryan, I'm sorry.
- Murad, don't be offended, I have to respond to this.
- You, “A la maison”, are not someone to share a table with, not a man to say a toast... won't
they tell me, whom did you bring?
- You will behave like this there as well?
- Do you want me to open my mouth on this joyous day? We need to honor, show respect,
humaneness, peace and solidarity... you will speak carefully to each other, you will listen
carefully...
-Murad, don't freak out over there.

61
-Depends on the circumstances.
-* circumstances*
- What about the timing?
- Brother, I think two days are not enough for this job.
- I would say 3 days is not enough either, we give you 4 days.
- What on earth are we going to do for 4 days?
- Dear Murad, two days you will spend on the road, two days to solve the current issues.
- Serob, you are responsible for the time, we are waiting for your arrival on the 4th day.
- Leave it to me.
- After all, our Yervand got upset out of nowhere.
-Don’t you even dare to say Yervand’s name.
-Aha.

-it’s landing, Let’s go.

-Greet them.
-Dear Dad,
-Artak jan.
-Artak jan.
-My love, I’d sacrifice my life for you, my son, how are you my lovely one?
-I am fine.
-How muchI missed you …
-Bonjour.
-You have lost some weight, darling…
-Hello Artak jan.
-Do you really feel good?
-Don’t suffocate the boy.
*
-Give it to me. I have been fighting in these lands,I remember it as if it was today... the Iron
Bridge, the lowland…come on guys, unload it.
-Come on, hold this.
-Mam jan.
-How are you,my son?

62
*
-Artak jan, don’t even worry about anything, your uncle is here, with you
-Aah,you have grown up Artak,well done/good job(?)
-I’ve told the guys, they’re unloading the vehicle.
-Artak jan, look at me,what’s this ?Not a single person from bridge’s side?
-They’re at home.
*Silence*
-You better tell me,did you bring my clothes ?
-I did,of course I did,darling,I also brought doshab/grape syrup,you’ll eat it with matsun.
-Do you think I’m a baby?
-Why did you come so late? When did I send the telegram?
-Artak jan, tell me please,is she beautiful?
-You will see.
-Is she tall,Artak jan?
-Yeah,enough.
-Well,is she smart?
-You tell me this:did you bring a ring?
-Vay,Serob said we will buy it from here.
-Serob,Serob..what does he even understand that you’re listening to him?
-Look how he talks about me,there is not even a little respect left. You think I’m your
child?Call me “my uncle” from now on.
-Why aru you getting angry, who gave you that permission?
-Listen to me Yervand, you blew up my mind during all the way here. It’s enough!
-Stop it.
-Just an uncle, says something, why are you making it a big deal?
-Don’t talk anymore.
*
-Artak,we loaded everything you can already roll off.
-Come on,let’s go!
-Yervand jan,come on.
-Be careful.
-Are these your friends Artak jan.

63
-Yes,mum jan.
*Song*
-Come on,stand up Murad jan
-Azat,what are you doing there, come here.
-Y’all stay together not to get lost.
-Artak jan
-Artak jan,ler me know who’s anyone’s anyone for me to know how to start this deal.
-It’s early to start anything.
-Serob,command us.Tell us where to put this stuff.
Dear guests,one minute,attention please,here’s our Valya,come on,come on.
-Looks exactly like a dummy.
*Laughing*
-Is this her?Vay!
-Hey you, have you lost your mind again,Leave Valya, leave I’m telling you,you will tear the
dress.Hell!,Isn’t ashamed oh his parents either.Shameless.

-So happy to see you.
-Come over please.
-We are here for one or two days not more.
-Let it be a month,no worries.
-This is not acceptable,
-Nonsense,you know better than Marfa? We copied this exactly as it was on the fashion
magazine.

64
-Marfa,Marfa…Marfa is getting married or you?Have you even looked at you for once, whom
do you look like?
-What a big deal!
-Listen to me,tomorrow in the morning..
-You can stop worrying about it,I will do exactly as you want but if they don’t like then I am
not guilty.
-So that without this wool!
*Crying*
Why did you do that?
-Why Artak freak out like that ?
-Ah,I am afraid that with the body that she has,she can’t survive in our countryside
-No,will not..
-Hasn’t anyone told her, such a young girl, why are you getting boks haircut,it doesn’t even suit
you.
-Isn’t it?
-So you’re colleagues .
-The pronunciation is my credo.
-Look at that, how is he able to laugh?

-He wants me to freak out…

-I consider the international collective farm meeting of agricultural leaders closed. Good luck
to you dear comrades!
-Rima Romanovna, I will wait for you in the street .We’ll go together.
*
-The pie.
-right away.
-A toast to your health. Thank you for the bread and salt. From the bottom of my heart I want
to say…
-Tell our Father’s words.
-Which words?
-Our Father used to say “What can't be achieved with a sword, is possible with bread and
salt”.
-Correct.
-Well said.
-To your health!
-Dear Ivan, in such cases an uncle should understand another uncle from half word.
-Exactly.
-This,this and this…here, eat my darling daughter.
-Who wants tea?
-Moi avec plaisir.
-Sil vu plait.
-They found each other.
-Our Yervand is also a teacher, an “à la maison”.
*laughing*
-Marfa jan, bring tea for me too,sil vu plait.
-Eat please, help yourself but only don’t lose yourselves.
-Nikolay Petrovich, you keep silence. Maybe because you don’t want us to come to your
house, right?
-Please, you're welcome, but it's true that the man is the head of the household, but on the other
hand, it depends on how you look at it. Without Natalya Semyonova the house is not a house.
-How’s our Natalya? May she have a safe and happy arrival. When is she coming back?
-Uhm well, I think maybe tomorrow, maybe the day after.

67
-That will not do, no,we’re running out of time, eh.
-That is, as they say, based on how you look at it. She gives a report there, you see. Personally
Vasili Vasilevich asked her to, as they say, you understand it.
-No problem, we will wait.
*
-It is very good here. The water is good, very good.
-Does it work for you?
-Very much.
-So where should we start our excursion from?
-Maybe we can go to sawmill where Ivanovich works?
-No need to, let the man do his job.
-In that case it’s better to go that way.
-OK! Then we will start from the church.
-Marfa Petrovna, why isn’t Ivan getting married?
-He doesn’t have time for it.
-How is it your business ?
-Don’t you know Azat?
-So what am I supposed to talk about?
-Forget it. Just move on to another topic.
-So how’s your name?
-Hello!
-Azat, please remember how’s this river called, you have been in these lands, right?
-How can I remember, this seems to be a new man-made creek many years have passed. I
think it wasn’t here back then.
-This church soon should be restored. Specialists have already observed it.
Excursion is going on.
-What excursion, wait. Azat is missing.
-He can’t find the road by himself, after all.
-No one will be lost.
-Azat,I told 1.000 times, stay together!
-How‘s it rolling?
-Not bad, it does.

68
-Fish is good here.
-How do you know?
-I have visited these places.
-Azat.
-Azat!
-Did we come to fishing, huh?
-I met some comrades. Can’t I have a little conversation?
-Come here, we are waiting for you.
-Alright, I am coming.
-So, see you.
-Bye.
-I told her, I said “I don’t appreciate your mom being this late”.
- to the point.
-I will make you obey, will you listen to me?
-Oh my God!
-Will you, a stubborn cow!
-Poor animal, why are you doing that?
-Plague on it! The owner is not here and she’s not letting anyone else closer.
-Arus, go help her, she’s young she is not that skilled.
-Open the gate.
-Hold this Murad jan. Why are you biting the poor animal, wait, wait.
-I'm running low on strength.
-There is no need to get upset for that.
-It tortured me.
-What’s her name?
-Malishka, plague on him.
-She probably likes being cared, Malishka, Malishka. Do you see?
-Good job Arus, you calmed her down.
-Malishka! please bring the bucket, girl.
-Neighbour, dear neighbour give me the bucket please.
-Calm down, good girl.
-Murad. Caring for an animal will move mountains. Well done.

69
-You’re welcome.
-Thank you.
-Arus will not hurt you.
*
-Grebeshkova N.S. is this her?
-She looks strict.
-She’s angry I guess.
-She doesn’t look someone who will come back soon.
-Natalya will not let Valya to that further place.
-Stop it.
-Come on, it’s better to send your Artak here.
-You could shut your mouth.
-The walk is going on.
-Do you see? Everyone knows our Artak.
-Marfa Petrovna, hello. Welcome.
-Not up to you ,not up to you .So where did we stop?
-Maybe we can get shaved. Azat what are you saying, huh?
-Dear Marfa,we will come back shortly.
-Don’t miss us.
-Arus we’re coming back soon.
-Only not for very long.
-Alright, alright.
-Yervant jan.
-Come on Arus.
-Welcome.
-Hello dear.
-Azat, don’t start again.
-These are Artak’s relatives and Natalya is in the town.
-You are the guests of our Nikolay, right?
-Yes.
-We will skip the line/queue. I’ll be right back.

70
-Nikolay is a worthy man, venerable and Valya, well, there is no word to describe her, I would
even say you got lucky.
-And Artak is a good guy, and how well he sings .Hello.
-Hello.
-Who’s that?
-she had something on her head, couldn’t recognize
-Isn’t this her?
-Yes, who else?
- Please, who’s next?
-
-Come on, Murad jan.
-Greetings! So, you’re from Armenia.
-Yes!From Armenia.
-I always said that the grapes and the water in Armenia cannot be found anywhere else.I
myself have never tasted anything like that. That is, you know, something really special.
-Have you been in Armenia?
-I’ve been in Kars, in 1914.
-And I have been in your regions in 1942. We stayed in Davidovka for 2 months. There is this
village called Davidovka. There are birch trees, a river…
-We don’t have such a place.
-Oh no, he probably means Demidovka. Hello once more.
-Hello.
-Maybe it was Demidovka, I don’t remember already. The whole month …
-Azat don’t start again.
*
-Listen, we will go altogether?
-Serob promised me and Valya that will invite everyone.
-Really! Well, if Serob promises something he keeps his promise.
-Is it beautiful there?
-Beautiful.
-Artak says their poplars are blooming now, the fluff is flying all around as white as snow.
Right Artak?

71
-Yes, it’s right.
-How happy you are Valya.
-And now his parents have came.
-What about the guy, is he a good match?
-A good one, intelligent one.
-Does he drink?
-No, and smokes very rarely.
-That’s good. In the end if they really love each other, what can you do ?You should go and
bless them.
-No,they want to take my daughter to the edge of the world ,I disagree. We will see who wins.
-Oh darling! You shouldn't do that.
-Good night.
-Good night.
*
-Hello comrade Armenians!
-Greetings!
-Who were they?
-That one's Serofin, Ivan’s friend.
-What about the other one?
-Hey man! They greeted us and we greeted in return.
-Where’s Artak?
-At their house, where else, don’t you know?
-Hold on, give me the light bulb. Why are you holding my legs, you should be holding the
chair instead.
-Don’t shout, say it calmly.
-He was saying. “I will go in the morning and by evening will come back with them”. Look at
us now. Lounging around.
-Murad, let me solve this issue.
-Yervand, say something.
- Maybe we need to rebel a bit, what’s going on here.
-Uh,Nikolay keeps silence doesn’t let us know what to do.
-We need to deal with Ivan, no benefit from Nikolay in this matter.

72
-Brothers, don’t you understand that man. He is honest, decent, virtuous…but without his wife
he has no say.
-Exactly, you’re right.
e-Hey, Murad, there he is, he left again.
-Hey Nikolay,dear!
-Where are you going?
-Stop him.
-Nikolay Petrovich, wait dear.
-Hello! I was just heading towards you.
-Nikolay Petrovich, dear, where is Natalya Simyonova? We have to call out for her.
-Yes, Nikolay jan, we have a lot of work to do back home. Azat left the collective poultry farm
and Serob left his brigade.
- That’s not the case.
-And please do not forget that I left school. Children will forget whatever they have learnt.
-She will probably arrive tomorrow maybe the day after.
-Eh dear Nikolay, that’s not how things should be done.
-Forgive me comrades.
-Tell him.
-I have been patiently waiting all this time, do you know what a French saying for such cases
says?
-Do not scare me with your French okay. Do you think Natalya Simyonova chilling out there?
She is a busy person. You can see what they write about her on newspapers, here you can take
this.
-We respect Natalya Simyonova very much, you know, why are you getting mad? Can’t we
ask a simple question?
-All I want to say is that I am the man at our household but the matters related to my daughter
are a woman’s duty of care..As Natalya comes back I’ll my man’s word.
-No problem, calm down dear Nikolay.
-You’re welcome but in any case I am right.
-Aha , he left again.
-What happened it’s been a while since Artak’s concerts.
-Hey, mind your business.

73
-What am I supposed to do? do you want be to burnt out?
-No dear Murad.
-There is no need. Pull yourself together.
-Please
*
-You don’t need to get upset over Nikolay.
-Comrade Ivan, even if madam comes back this issue is still going to be unsolved and that as I
understand is going to be a serious problem for all of us, right?
-Aha,now do you understand Serob? No Ivan jan,I can’t stop thinking of what you said. That’s
a very good idea.
-That’s a great idea.
-Very great.
-They came. Come inside. Why are you late?
-We were waiting for the last bus to arrive. She didn’t come again.
-So, Marfa Petrovna?
-Shura informed that the meeting has ended long ago.
-That’s it, our meeting has also ended long ago. What are you saying, huh? Great, we will
leave for tomorrow with everyone here. Do you agree Valya?
-As uncle says.
-Listen Serob what if father gets upset for not telling him?
-Again Serob! You have to call me uncle Serob!
-Shsh.
-What’s wrong?
-Murad is such a civilized man.
-Alright, everything is clear.
-So tomorrow at seven.
-At eight!
-Do I need to wait any longer?
-We will leave now.
-You want Murad to wake up?
-Serob, hurry up people are waiting.
-Wait, I need to take my suit?

74
-Serob, you are handsome regardless the suit ?
-You are so right.
-Come on hurry up.
-I have my brain is with me.
*
-Arus, where did they go in these early hours of the morning? -I am not sure. Serob said
they’re going fishing.
-Fishing? Look at them as if they know how it is done. Arrogant sons of bitches/
bustards.What are you making?
-Jam, for Ivan. He will remember us while eating in winter.
-Oh, he’s definitely worth the effort. Ivan is a good guy… What a good soil. Why aren’t they
watering it?
-Murad, they were watering their garden, bring the water here.
-the neighbors?
-Yes, yes.
- What if they object. Here right?
-Right, enter there.
- who would have thought I’d became a water thief!
-Here is your sugar.
-Thank you Azat jan.
-I met Serafim. He said it’s been a while since the sluices have been closed. There can’t be
fishing.
-Azat those children are waiting for you.
-Really I am going then.
-Like this, it’s clear for you, right?..like this, now we’re making some spots for our fingers.
This one I am making for Vova I promised him at first and then for the others. Now like this..is
it beautiful?
-Who gave you permission?
-Without even asking you’ve entered someone else’s garden. Not even ashamed. At least
apologize! You could have asked for a permission, we are not greedy.
-What did you do?I am talking to you.He doesn’t even apologize!

75
-Alright alright. Why are you screaming like that? As if the whole world turned upside down.
We should have left it dry? Uf!
-There must be order.
-There is no need to scream, he will return it now.
-He should have asked beforehand.
-What all the fuss about? What happened?
-They’re shouting without any reason. The water is running and we also wanted to water the
garden. Poor Ivan comes home late at night, shouldn’t we help him?
-Forgive me who are you?
-We? We are with Nikolay and Natalya. We are not strangers.
-Matchmakers.
-Vay! Natalya is that you? Of course it’s you. Welcome back. It’s been a while since we have
arrived here waiting for you and we could not get any news from you.
-Murad she’s back !
-She’s back.
-Arusyak Vardanyan.
-Murad Parsadanovich, we have been waiting for you.
-Sure,we’re just waiting for Yervand and Serob.
-It’s better for you to go, they may get offended. I will find them and bring back here.
-Where on Earth are they?
-Who is this?
-That’s also me.
-Look.
-Summer, Aluston.
-Me again.
-Here look at him.
-Got it.
-Good job. Leave it here.
-What about this one?
-That’s me again in summer, those are new photos.
-Bravo Maestro, bravo thank you.
-Thank you very much.

76
-Where are you going?
-Sit down, don’t move.
-Later, later he will come back.
-Come here, sit down.
-Is everybody here?
-I drink only champagne.
-You’re not treating Valya as you should.
-Especially for you..
-Thank you!
-And now stand up.Stand up!
-What’s going on?
-Valya jan…And now hooray!
-A gift from us,a gift.
-From our table.
-Kiss the bride!
-Kiss the bride!
-Bravo!
-Once again!
-Do you see what I am doing?
-Good but that’s enough for now.
-Offer a toast for parents.
-Don’t teach Yervand a lesson.
-Dear friends,May the roses bloom,
May the violets bloom for this love.
May the Sun shine brighter for this love.
May Yervand sing his songs for this love
…Expromt.
-Come on Yervand, sing chanson.
-Dear Artak there is no need to teach Yervand. Une minute s'il vous plait..
*
-To be honest I wanted to inform court-martial about your son. Nikolay and Ivan didn’t let me
to do so.

77
-That’s right. Exactly.
-Why so?
- Court-martial? For what?
-When everyone arrives I will explain. Help Yourself. At least because my daughter is missing
now, she’s not home. Where is she? Where did they take him?
-That is right I am also angry with them, with your son too.
-Nothing to worry about, now Azat will find them and bring them back home.
-Artak is the only child?
-Yes, the only only one.
-And Valya is also an only child.Do you think it will be easy for us?
-That’s exactly why we want you to have two and us to have two.
-Everyone in my team goes to Nikolay’s house.
-To Nikolay’s house.
-Serob?
-Now Ivan jan.
-Serob why are you going?
-I need to have my suit.I need to.
- Serob, you are handsome regardless the suit.
-You are so right.
-Good evening my friends.
-Welcome.
-Where were you Artak?
-Murad jan everything is…let me speak man. You’re choking me.
-Where were you?
-I already said that I solved the issues. Yervand show them. Show them.
-What does this mean?
- Blessed be the marriage signed signed in the registry office!
-Hooray!
-Did you hear it? Did you?
-Don’t worry, don’t worry I will sort everything out.
-Natalya is fainting.
-Murad jan.

78
-What did you do? Aren’t you ashamed of what you did?
-Calm down Murad.
-Bring water.
-I don’t have a daughter for you. Going to marriage registry without me. I don’t want to know
anything.
-Without us? Without the parents!
-Murad is coming.
-I will slaughter Serob first.
-Barbarossa!
-Damn it!
-So that guy doesn’t have a dad? We’re no one to him?
-Murad wait.
*Noise*
-Murad! Oh, no! Please, don’t burst with anger.
-Calm down please. Calm down.
-I am calm. Listen up! I, Murad, son of Parsadan, came here to hear a Nyet? I will show you.
-You shouldn't have shown them the certificate.
-Again I am to be blamed in this situation?
-Yes yes.
-This is very bad.
-We got it, don’t get angry on us.
-Oh! They’re coming here.
-Artak!
-Yervant!
-Calm down man.
*
-What did you do? Why did you do that? Why did you freak out? Children are not guilty. My
poor children. That’s all Yervand’s and Serob’s fault. Ah! It’s their fault.
-Stay strong Arus jan,stay strong.
-Where are you my poor ones?
-Nothing yet.
-Any news, Ivan?

79
-Not yet. Look out for them around elevator.
-Let’s go, girls.
-Come on, hurry up.
-Where could they go?
-They’re not at the grove either.
-Vanya, they are nowhere to be found. Where are they lost?
-Why are you standing like this. What about calling the cops and police dogs?
*
-As you know.
-Hello.
-Alyosha, come here.Alyosha!
-Yervand, Serob, wake up, children are missing and go find them. Heavens, they put my poor
kids in danger.
-They are sleeping like a log as if I am the one to be blamed.
-Did you find your Davidovka?
-He did.
-Great timing to joke around. That woman passed out, Murad burst out, Arus is suffering.
-Listen, comrade Azat, not a living soul can scare Serob.
-Please.
-Pardon. I am sorry.
-found them.
-Where are the kids? Where could they go?
-There are they! On the roof!
