Overview of technical drawing and its applications

I. Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this module, students will be able to:

1. Define technical drawing and its significance in various fields.

2. Identify the different types of technical drawings and their applications.
3. Understand the basic principles and conventions of technical drawing.
4. Interpret and create simple technical drawings using standard symbols and techniques.
5. Apply technical drawing skills to solve real-world problems.

II. Introduction

Technical drawing, also known as engineering drawing or drafting, is a graphical language

used to communicate technical information. It is a universal language that is understood by
engineers, technicians, and manufacturers around the world. Technical drawings are used to
describe the shape, dimensions, and tolerances of parts and assemblies. They are also used to
convey manufacturing instructions, assembly sequences, and other technical information.
Overview of Technical Drawing and its Applications
Technical drawing is an essential skill for anyone involved in the design, manufacturing, or
maintenance of products. It is used in a wide variety of industries, including:
 Engineering: Technical drawings are used to create and document the design of
products, from simple components to complex machines.
 Manufacturing: Technical drawings are used to manufacture products according to the
engineer's design. They provide manufacturers with the information they need to
produce parts that meet the required specifications.
 Construction: Technical drawings are used to plan and construct buildings, bridges,
and other structures. They provide contractors with the information they need to build
structures that are safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing.
 Architecture: Technical drawings are used to create architectural plans and designs.
They provide architects with the tools they need to communicate their ideas to clients
and contractors.
In addition to these traditional applications, technical drawing is also becoming increasingly
important in the digital age. CAD software has made it possible to create and modify
technical drawings more quickly and easily than ever before. This has led to the use of
technical drawings in new areas, such as:
 Product design: Technical drawings are used to create 3D models of products. These
models can be used to visualize the product, test its design, and generate
manufacturing instructions.
 Rapid prototyping: Technical drawings are used to create 3D printed prototypes of
products. This allows designers to test their designs quickly and cheaply before
committing to production.
 Reverse engineering: Technical drawings are used to create 3D models of existing
products. These models can be used to understand how the product works, make
repairs, or create new products that are similar to the existing product.
As technology continues to evolve, technical drawing will continue to play an important role
in the design, manufacturing, and maintenance of products.

III. Learning Process

A. Activity: KWL Chart

Step 1. Write brief statements in the second column (KNOW) about what you know
of the topics listed in the first column.

Step 2. Form a group where you can share and discuss what you have written in the
second column. Afterwards, fill-out the third column (WANT).
Step 3. After the group sharing, fill-out the fourth column (LEARNED) with what
you have learned after the group sharing.
B. Analysis: Examining Your Assessment Practices
Instruction: Examine your assessment practices with the guide questions provided.
Write your answers in the space provided below.

Questions Answer
Compare and contrast the
different types of technical
drawings, including orthographic
projections, pictorial drawings,

Discuss the advantages and

disadvantages of using
traditional drafting tools versus
CAD software for creating
technical drawings.
Explain the importance of
dimensioning techniques in
technical drawing and describe
the different types of
dimensioning techniques.
Analyze the role of technical
drawing in the design,

of products.

Discuss the future of technical

drawing in the digital age.

C. Abstraction

Types of Technical Drawings

There are three main types of technical drawings:

Orthographic projections: These drawings show an object from multiple sides, typically the
front, top, and side views. They are used to create a complete and accurate representation of
an object.

Pictorial drawings: These drawings show an object in a three-dimensional view, such as
isometric or oblique projection. They are used to give a more realistic representation of an
object than orthographic projections.

Sectional views: These drawings show the inside of an object by cutting through it. They are
used to show the internal features of an object that would not be visible from the outside.

Applications of Technical Drawing

Technical drawing is used in a wide variety of industries, including:

Engineering: Technical drawings are used to create and document the design of products,

provide architects with the tools they need to communicate their ideas to clients and
contractors.

Importance of Technical Drawing

Technical drawing is an essential skill for anyone involved in the design, manufacturing, or
maintenance of products. It is used to communicate technical information clearly and
effectively, and it is essential for ensuring that products are manufactured correctly.

Future of Technical Drawing

In the digital age, technical drawing is becoming increasingly important. CAD software has
made it possible to create and modify technical drawings more quickly and easily than ever
before. This has led to the use of technical drawings in new areas, such as:

Product design: Technical drawings are used to create 3D models of products. These models
can be used to visualize the product, test its design, and generate manufacturing instructions.

These models can be used to understand how the product works, make repairs, or create new
products that are similar to the existing product.

Technical drawing is a valuable tool that is used in a wide variety of industries. It is an

essential skill for anyone involved in the design, manufacturing, or maintenance of products.
As technology continues to evolve, technical drawing will continue to play an important role
in the design and development of new products.
