Advent is traditionally thought of in two ways: anticipation for the Feast of the Incarnation, in which we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ here on earth and hope in the Second Coming of Christ. The way we ponder these aspects of the season may include special prayers to use at meal times at home, devotions for each day according to an Advent calendar or booklet Continued on page 3

Christmas: keep opening the gifts

By The Rev. Emily Jesus is the original Christmas gift. So this Christmas when you unwrap your presents, dont leave Jesus under the tree. Make sure you open that gift! Share whats inside. For in the gift of Jesus we find, as he grows up, the gift of Christ: Gods Chosen One proclaiming good news to the poor and freedom to captives, healing the sick and lame, overcoming death and the grave, and invitHillquist Davis Growing up, I remember my family had one special recipe that we made once a year. My mom and I would spend hours ing his followers to live on in him and he in us, so that we also might become children of God. And when we open that next gift the gift of our inclusion in the Body of Christ we find that we also are the gift, the gift that still needs opening. New Prayer List

By The Rev. Virginia Noel Want to be involved at St. Martins but dont have time? Want to be a part of our ministry but cant make the commitment? Try this one: pray once a week for parishioners who are living with chronic pain or have a chronic illness. Liz and Jim completed confirmation classes at St. Martins last year, but were unable to attend the confirmation service at Christ Church Cathedral with the rest of their class last spring. So the couple caught up with the Bishop at a regularly scheduled visit at St. Timothys Episcopal Church in Creve Coeur to make their

Saturday evening worship takes root

By The Rev. Emily Hillquist Davis At Worship under Construction these past five weeks, weve been developing our Saturday evening Eucharist by a process of worship and debriefing, trial and error. Sometimes it was so rough, it seemed we should be wearing hard hats! But we are settling into a mellow groove. It is an informal service with participation of many who come, especially kids. We offer the opportunity to let the scriptures read you as we hear and respond to the Sunday Gospel passage in several translations. The service, which is taking place every Saturday at 5 p.m., is geared toward flexibility, hospitality, and peace. In December, several diverse special events will take place in the context of this worship time:
Saturday, Dec. 3, 5 p.m. Worship & Fellowship with Bishop Stephen Dokolo and his wife Lillian Clement Saturday, Dec. 17, 5 p.m. A Blue Christmas Communion

This time of year can be hard on those of us who grieve. This simple yet deeply moving Advent worship service provides a time of prayer, meditation, candlelight and music that acknowledges and honors sadness and mixed feelings that holidays sometimes provoke and help us offer them up to God.
Saturday, Dec. 24, 5 p.m. Christmas Pageant & Holy Eucharist

Bp. Stephen will preach for us and celebrate the Eucharist followed by a reception in Park Hall. We are looking to spice up this worship with African liturgy and music.
Saturday, Dec. 10, 5 p.m.

The children of St. Martins take center stage for a fun re-telling of the traditional Christmas story. All ages are invited! (Candlelight Christmas service will begin at 10:30 on Christmas Eve.)

Simple and peaceful worship at the chapel. Come and center.

Advent, continued from page 1

(see our tract rack), and making quiet time during the day to consider what the presence of Christ means to us in the year ahead. The scriptures we read on Sundays reflect this sense of preparation as well. The color we use in this season is the deep blue of the night sky just before mornings light. Historically purple was used, but Advent deserves its own color so that it is not confused for another Lent. Advent contains messages of penitence but with a sense of joy that the birth of Christ brings. Advent is also the beginning of the Churchs calendar, which starts Nov. 27 this year. This is when a new cycle of daily and Sunday scripture readings and prayers are begun. We hope that you will take this season of Advent to peacefully get ready for our celebrations Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Peace to you in this season of wonder, Fr. Jon

Christmas, continued from page 1

and serving Christ in all people (including ourselves). As Christians, our celebration of Christmas can be so much deeper than a mere exchange of presents. By Gods grace we are what we eat: The gifts of God for the People of God, as we say during Communion. As Christ nourishes us in the Eucharist, we are called into the cycle of nourishing others. Homework: This Christmas, lets try to name for each person in your household even for yourself at least one gift or skill that each of you is sharing with others as you are accepting Christs invitation to transformation. Try to name one way that each of you is a Gift of God for the People of God a birthday gift for Jesus. Yours looking forward in Christ, emily+

Anticipation and hope in Advent

By Earl Naylor, Music Director With the beginning of the Advent season comes many changes in our worship life: different service music, a new lectionary cycle, and new colors for the paraments and clergy stoles. This year, beginning December 4, we will have a new set of vestments and paraments for Advent, which will be blue. Historically, the primary sanctuary color of Advent is purple. This is the color of penitence and fasting as well as the color of royalty to welcome the Advent of the King. The penitential aspect is still there today, but a greater emphasis has been placed on hope and anticipation. We use the color blue to symbolize this expectation and waiting. Many Protestant churches now use blue to distinguish the Season of Advent from Lent. Royal blue is sometimes used as a symbol of royalty. Some churches use bright blue to symbolize the night sky, the anticipation of the impending announcement of the Kings coming, or to symbolize the waters of Genesis 1, the beginning of a new creation.

Toddler Sunday school classes set to begin

By Kay Fletcher St. Martins Sunday School will soon be offering classes for two- and three-year-olds. The classes will begin in January and meet on the second and fourth Sunday each month from 9:30 till 10 a.m. The classes will be held in the nursery and will be led by Susan Miraflores. In other Sunday school news, Rev Emily met with grades 1 through 5 on St. Martin's Day (Sunday, Nov. 13). The children learned about sign language. What a wonderful experience! If you haven't registered for Sunday School, please join us and register in your child's classroom, or call me (636326-9833) and I'll get the info to you. It's important that we have a registration form for each child or youth. Registration is always OPEN. See you in Sunday School!

St. Martins youth: reaching out to Joplin

By Heidi Gioia, Director of Youth Ministries As reported in last months issue of Messages, the vestry voted to give one-third of this years garage sale proceeds to Joplin relief and rebuild efforts. After visiting the area in October, we discussed how to make faithful decisions. We brainstormed a list of ideas, talked to Joplin residents and researched area organizations. After prayerful consideration, our youth are proud to announce the recipients of our outreach funds. Heres a summary of the efforts they will be funding this year: Purchasing Christmas gifts for Joplin children in need Funding a spring social for both the Joplin High School and Middle School Student Councils in an effort to bolster spirits Donating toward the regreening of city parks Supporting Childrens Haven, an organization that provides temporary shelter to children whose families are in crisis
Youth Group Lock-in:
19 middle school students attended the youth group lock-in at St. Martins Nov. 18-19. (left) Youth group leader Jim Arras lends a hand during Cake Boss competition. (right) Kat, Hope and Kyle show off their tasty creation.

In addition to sending money to these worthwhile organizations, the youth are excited to DO missional work in Joplin in 2012. To that end, we plan to do the following: Join the high school & middle school for their socials & getting to know them a little better Assist with the planting of trees and greenery Assist with light construction jobs for the Lafayette House transitional housing project, an initiative of the Diocese of Western Missouri Its exciting to see how our youth are really coming to understand what mission is all about. They are meeting people and hearing their stories, discerning where we can help make a difference, and giving our time, talent and treasure. This is the beginning of something transformational!

Upcoming Youth Events:

Peace Meal Project: Saturday, Dec. 3, 1:30 to 7 p.m. High school students are invited to prepare a meal for the community at St. Johns Episcopal Church in Tower Grove. Sign up in Park Hall or via e-mail ([email protected]) Sunday Evening Gathering: Sunday, Dec. 4 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Well share a meal, worship together, play games and break in to small groups for discussion. * Due to scheduling conflicts, the Dec.17 Middle School Service Day at Circle of Concern has been postponed until 2012. Holiday Party: Wednesday, Dec. 28 Stay tuned for details of when and where well get together over the holiday break to enjoy a day of games, food & fun.

Lunch Bunch Adventures

By Mary Pomeroy It was an overcast, chilly Autumn day, but twenty-two hardy Lunch Bunch members (singles and couples) ventured out recently to visit the Daniel Boone home and Boonesfield Village in Defiance, MO. Many were surprised and pleased with all of the additions to the Boone village that had taken place since their last visit. The Boone home itself has undergone more restoration as well. Our tour guide was fun and extremely knowledgeable. After our visit to the historic home and village, the group happily moved on to Montelle Winery for a little wine tasting and lunch. The sun did peep in and out at the winery showing off the beautiful fall colors glowing in the valley below the winery. It was a great trip for all. The Lunch Bunch group meets the fourth Thursday of each month at 11:30 a.m. in Park Hall. Bring a sack lunch and join us next month! Coffee and dessert supplied by the host of the month.
