Cen 2212 Fluid Mechanics 2020-2021 Final Exam

The document is a final exam for a fluid mechanics course consisting of 3 questions. The first question asks to calculate the pump work required to maintain a volumetric flow rate in a pipeline system with various pipe components and changes in elevation. The second question asks to derive the velocity profile equation for laminar flow between two parallel plates. The third question involves using a venturimeter to calculate volumetric flow rate based on pressure drop measurements.

CEN 2212 FLUID MECHANICS 2020-2021 FINAL EXAM

Date: 07.06.2021
Time: 09.00-12.00

1. (40 p) 6 cm-diameter commercial steel pipeline is used to transport water at 10⁰C from a
reservoir to a free discharge point. The pipeline consists of 85 m straight pipe, 2 wide open
gate valves, 1 wide open angle valve, 4 standart 90⁰ elbows, 1 entrance from a reservoir and
1 free discharge. The elevation of the entrance is 10 m while the elevation of the discharge is
35 m. The inlet pressure is 20 psig and exit pressure is 0 psig. A pump is installed in the line to
move the water. Calculate the pump work (J/kg) so the volumetric flow rate will be Q= 0.01
m3/s. (1 psi = lbf/in2 ).

2. (30 p) Consider steady state, laminar flow of a fluid in the y direction between two parallel and
vertical stationary plates with a distance of h. Derive an equation for the velocity profile.
Hint: Choose a volume element and state all your assumptions.

3. (30 p) A venturimeter with a 75 mm diameter throat is placed in a 150 mm diameter line

carrying water at 25⁰C. The pressure drop between the upstream tap and the venturi throat is
(-ΔP) 300 mmHg. Calculate the volumetric flow rate in the pipe (Cv = 0.98)
