TOPIC : RELATION
1 Let A = { 3,4,5} and relation R on set A is defined as R ={ (a,b) ∈ AxA: a-b = 10}. Is relation
an empty relation.
2 Define : Identity relation and Reflexive relation.
3 If R = { (x,y): x+2y = 8} is a relation on N, write the range.
4 A reflexive relation is identity relation also. State true or false and reason.

5 Let set A = {1,2,3} define relation R on set A as R = {(a,b) ∈ AxA: a+b <6 }. Show that R is
a universal relation.
6 If Rand S are two equivalence relations in a set A , show that R∩S is also an equivalence
relation.
7 Let N be the set of all natural number and let R be a relation on NxN defined by (a,b)R(c,d)
iff ad = bc for all (a,b) , (c,d) ∈ NxN. Show that R is an equivalence relationon NxN.
8 Let f : A→ A be a given function. A relation R in a set A is given by
R = { (a,b) ∈ AxA: f(a) = f(b) }. Check, whether R is an equivalence relation .
9 Show that the relation R defined by (a,b)R(c,d) → a+d = b+c on the set NxN is an
equivalence relation.
10 Determine the relation R defined on the set R of all real numbers as
R = {(a,b) : a,b ∈R and a- b +√3 ∈ S, where S is the set of all irrational numbers} is reflexive ,
symmetric and transitive.
11 Show that the relation R defined on set A = {x ∈ Z : 0 ≤ x ≤ 12 }, given by
R = { (a,b) : |a – b |is a multiple of 4 } is an equivalence relation.
12 Show that the relation R in the set NxN defined by (a,b) R (c,d) iff
a2+d2 = b2+c2 ∀a,b,c,d ∈N

1. Find the number of all onto functions from the set {1,2,3,.......n } to itself.

3. Let A and B be two finite sets having m and n elements respectively. How many mappings
are possible from A to B ?
