Homework 1: Summary of a raw dataset into a two-way frequency table based on two events.
1. Seven groups of students are formed; each group will be formed with three or four, or five students
depending on the number of students in the class
2. Use the dataset provided
3. Answer the questions
4. To highlight that all the students of each group must contribute and work on the task
Objective:
Summarize a raw dataset into a two-way frequency table based on two events and use this to answer the
questions mentioned below. (For contingency tables examples, refer to exercises 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, and 3.4 of your
textbook).
Description:
A survey to collect information about households in the USA has been conducted and the results were
summarized in a dataset (provided).
1. Internet: yes, no
2. Age_husband: (21 – 25), (26 – 31), (32 – 37), (38 – 43), (44 – 49)
3. Age_wife: (19 – 23), (24 – 28), (29 – 33), (34 – 38), (39 – 43)
4. Owned: Rented, occupied without payment of rent, Owned with mortgage or loan, Owned free and clear
5. Language: English only, Spanish, Other
6. Number of children: the students will make five intervals
7. Income_wife: the students will make five intervals
8. Income_husband: the students will make five intervals
9. Household: the students will make five intervals
10. Electricity consumption: the students will make five intervals
11. Decade_built: the students will make five intervals
1. Two variables are chosen among the variables listed above; and these two variables will be used to
represent two events A and B
2. Create the two-way frequency table to display numbers based on the events A and B (see example
provided below)
3. Based on the table you have created, the members of each group will have to accomplish the followings
tasks
3.1. Check if the two events are independent; and justify their answer
3.2. Make three different questions about the followings probabilities: P(A|B), P(B|A), and P(AB)
3.3. Answer the questions you made in part (3.2)
Hint: For instance, if a question is all about age of wife group and the number of children, the events A and
B could be

A = {wife age group}, and let A1 = age_wife group 1 (19 – 23), A2 = age_wife group 2 (24 – 28), A3 =
age_wife group 3 (29 – 33), A 4 = age_wife group 4 (34 – 38), A5 = age_wife group 5 (39 – 43)
B = {the number of children}, and let B1=( 0−2 ) , B2= (3−4 ) , B3 =( 5−6 ) , B4 =( 7−8 ) ,
B5=( 9−10 ) ,

B1 xx xx xx xx xx xx
B2 xx xx xx xx xx xx
B3 xx xx xx xx xx xx
B4 xx xx xx xx xx xx
B5 xx xx xx xx xx xx
Total xx xx xx xx xx xx
xx are the numbers you have found
Use the table to check if the two events are independent; and justify your answer
Ask three different questions and answer them, write your answers in symbols and English words, for
example:
First question: What is the probability that a selected age_wife group (24 – 28) given the number of her
children falls within the group B3 (3 – 4):
Answers: in symbols P ( A 2|B3 )=xx ; and write the answer in English words. For example, assuming that the
probability you have found is equal to 0.8321, just say that 83.21% of the - - - - - - - - - -
