Introduction
GUM is a generic and modular Game Master’s assistant that helps you play your favorite
tabletop roleplaying games with less effort, by providing you with ideas for your game on the
fly, develop stories with rich and creative twists, be it for playing as a solo player, sharing the
GM role among your group, or to help yourself while game mastering to your friends.

What is a GM Assistant?
GUM gives you abstract random tables to generate elements for your game, such
as discoveries, scenes, or character motivations. These tables are not too specific,
so you can interpret and adjust the results to suit your specific situation.

This allows you to reduce your random tables collection, since GUM’s tables are
generic enough to be reused over and over, each time with a different meaning.

What about PUM and SUM?


You can use PUM for the plot, SUM to emulate the world, and GUM as a generator.

Plot unfolding machine (PUM) is a one-page GM emulator; it has been designed to


carry plots and stories forward until their resolution, by prompting you with narrative,
pacing, and plot structure. It includes fundamentals of Solo RPG such as oracles.


Scene unfolding machine (SUM) is a supplement to any GM emulator (including


PUM), meant to address NPC emulation, and GM actions to introduce random twists.


Game unfolding machine, on the other hand, is just a GM assistant. It is rather a set
of abstract tables that can be used for any setting, to bring ideas on the fly.

When to use GUM?


Use case #1: As a helpful tool to run low-prep games to your friends
Use GUM’s game creator to quickly design an interesting plot seed for tonight’s game,
and the other tools to shape it further or come up with ideas on the fly while playing.

Use case #2: As a solo player, to complement your GM-less RPG setup
By adding it along your GM emulator of choice, GUM can bring ideas when needed,
such as creating characters, items, factions, motivations, plot discoveries, and more.

How to use GUM?


GUM has no rules! Use what you need, when you need
The game unfolding machine is a content generator. It is meant to be used along your
own roleplaying games setup. It can be used with any settings, worlds, and genre.

asset for coming up with the first scene, if you prefer to skip the plot hook moment.
