hair-grooming preparation residues. Hi! I am Joces Nina Bianes Olaso from Dolores National High School, a
pleasant day to our dearest Teachers, Future inventors and Science enthusiasts. This is my entry for LIKHA
entitled, INDIAN HEAD GINGER (COSTUS SPICATUS) NATURALLY REPLENISHING SHAMPOO: AN
EVALUATION.
Herbs have been used for thousands of years due to its medicinal properties. Body starts to get cleansed and gets
purified itself when herbs are taken. There are large numbers of plants which are reported to have beneficial
effects on hair and are commonly used in shampoos. Hence, I the researcher sought to formulate a natural
herbal shampoo out of Indian Head Ginger extract. According to Hedge, Rao & Rao 2018, Costus Spicatus,
commonly known as Indian Head Ginger, is a member of Costaceae. It is a perennial, upright, spreading plant
reaching about two feet tall, with spirally arranged leaves and attractive flowers. This research suggests using
Indian Head Ginger that is medicinal and ornamental plant. The purpose of this study is to evaluate Indian Head
Ginger as an alternative shampoo by analyzing its Smell, Physical Appearance/Visual Inspection,
Determination of pH, Determination of Percentage Solid Contents, Measurement of Viscosity & Foaming
Ability and Foam Stability. The experimental and developmental design will be used in this study, this study is
considered as such since it applies a scientific approach and aims to produce a novel product which is to be
tested through series of processes.
Let’s jump on what will be the method of this study. Indian Head Ginger extract, gloves, and cribble are all
required for the first step of this study. The extract of Indian Head Ginger will then be educed by me, the
researcher. To avoid obtaining unnecessary microorganisms in the product, the work station must be disinfected
and enclosed. The harvested Indian Head Ginger will be manually squashed, and the fluids will be collected in a
clean container. To achieve the desired outcomes, this procedure should be completed in 5 to 10 minutes. To
make the components less messy, a funnel, beaker, and flask will be required for this study. To begin, I, the
researcher will need 60 mL of Indian Head Ginger extract, 10 mL of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or surfactant and 5
10 leaves of Plumeria Flower in the formulation. Using a funnel, pour 60 mL of Indian Head Ginger extract into
the beaker. On the formulation, 10 mL of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or surfactant will be added. According to our
source Safety.Org 2021, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate has been used in shampoos since the 1930s, it acts as a
surfactant, trapping oil and grime in the hair and allowing it to be rinsed away with water. SLS has been
thoroughly evaluated in these products and shown to be safe for both people and the environment. After that,
the funnel will be removed and the Plumeria Flower leaves will be added one by one. The solution will be
boiled for around 15–20 minutes at a temperature just below boiling point. The mixture will be placed in a flask
and allow it to cool after the process.

The overall acceptability of three formulations will be evaluated in this study, specifically the Smell, Physical
Appearance/Visual Inspection, Determination of pH, Determination of Percentage Solid Contents,
Measurement of Viscosity & Foaming Ability and Foam Stability. Phytochemical Analysis will be conducted
on the formulation. And there will be an alternative shampoo available in the country.
