2) A male creature came, but it was a dog. His name was Tumang. He happily brought the tool to
her. Dayang Sumbi was very surprised, but she kept her promise. She married the dog. Tumang was
actually a man who had been cursed by a witch to become a dog. But at certain times Tumang could
turn back to be a normal man. Their only son, Sangkuriang, was soon born, and he grew up to be a
handsome and healthy boy. He always played with his very loyal dog, Tumang. He did not know that
he was actually his father, because Dayang Sumbi hid the secret from him. Sangkuriang liked to hunt
in the woods, of course with Tumang.
3) One day Dayang Sumbi asked him to bring home a deer’s heart. But, after hunting for several days,
hecould not find any deer in the woods. He did not want to disappoint his mother and was thinking
hard how to bring home a deer’s heart. Suddenly, he had a very bad idea. He killed Tumang! Then, he
brought his heart home and gave it to Dayang Sumbi.
4) Sangkuring could not cheat her. She knew it was Tumang’s heart. So, she got very angry and hit
Sangkuriang’s forehead with a piece of wood and told him to leave. With a bad wound on his
forehead, Sangkuriang left the village.
5) Many years later, Sangkuriang grew up to be a powerful man. One day he went back to his village.
Hemet a beautiful young woman there, and he fell in love with her at the first sight. It was Dayang
Sumbi! She never got older because she had been granted eternal youth by the gods. Sangkuriang did
not know that she was his mother, so he came to her and proposed to marry her.
6) When he walked closer to her, Dayang Sumbi got very surprised. She saw the scar in
Sangkuriang’forehead, and soon she knew that he was her son, who left her a long time ago. She told
him the truth and tried hard to explain it to him, but he did not believe her.
She did not want to break his heart, so she accepted his proposal but gave him an impossible thing to
do. She wanted him to build a lake and a boat in just one night!

light made all the cocks crow. Thinking that the night would be over soon, the genies ran fast and left

Bawang Putih dan Bawang Merah

Once there lived in a village called Dadapan, a widow named Mak

Dadapan. She had two daughters, Bawang Putih, who was her stepdaughter
and Bawang Merah, a daughter of her own. Mak Dadapan did not treat
them in the same way. To her own daughter, she was very tolerant.
Bawang Merah could do and get everything she wanted and she did not
like helping her mother in household matters. For Bawang Putih, her
stepmother was very severe. This girl had to do everything at home.
One day, Bawang Putih had to wash clothes at the river. She was tired
and did not notice that a piece of clothing was dragged by the stream. The
stepmother was furious. Then she let her look for the piece of clothing at
the riverbank.
Bawang Putih returned to the river and followed the stream. She met a man who was bathing his
horse on the riverside.
“Excuse me, Sir. Have you seen a piece of clothing dragged by the stream?” “No, I
haven’t. Just ask the man who is fishing downstream.”
Then Bawang Putih walked away. She saw an old woman who was fishing on the riverside.
“Excuse me, Ma’am. Did you see a piece of clothing?”
“Yes, my dear. Come with me. I’ll give it to you.”
Who was in fact the old woman? She was a demon called Nini Buto Ijo. On arriving at Nini Buto
Ijo’s house, Bawang Putih was frightened because she was in the demon’s house. Any utensil was
different, from what she used at home. The ladle was made of human hands; the mugs of a human skull;
wood for cooking was human bones.
After cooking and cleaning the house, “Ma’am, everything is clear. May I get my piece of clothing
and go home?”
“Well, it is already dark. You will meet my brother on your way and he will eat you up. Thus, stay
here tonight and return home tomorrow.”
The next morning, Nini Buto Ijo gave her a piece of clothing and melon. Bawang Putih walked
home as quickly as she could. On arriving at home, the stepmother took a piece of clothing and melon
from Bawang Putih’s hands. Quickly she opened the melon. Wow! Gold, silver, and precious stones!
Bawang Merah wanted to get the same melon as Bawang Putih’s. She looked for Nini Buto Ijo’
house. She found and met Nini Buto Ijo but she refused to help her clean her house. After a while, she
asked permission to get back home. Nini Buto Ijo gave her the melon, too. She went home in a hurry

and weak. He knocked at every door and asked for some food, but nobody cared about him. Nobody
wanted to help the little boy.
Finally, a generous woman helped him. She gave him shelter and a meal. When the boy

reminded him, “Please remember, if there is a flood you must save yourself. Use this “lesung” as a
boat”. The “lesung” was happy and thanked the old woman. The little boy continued his journey.
