1. Books are placed on shelves according to the subject they deal with.
2. Each subject is assigned a number and is pasted on the spine of the book. These are called call-
numbers or classification numbers.
3. This makes it easy for the user to locate the book on the shelf with minimum effort.
4. With the use of number, all books on a given subject can be found at one single place.
5. List of these numbers against the subject they deal with is made available at a prominent place
for user’s reference.
6. Books like encyclopedias, dictionaries are found on separate shelves. Similarly government
publications may be shelved separately.
7. Books of great demand by students are placed in separate area called ‘loan section’.
8. Voluminous, rare books and original manuscripts are often placed under ‘reference only’ section.
9. Contents in the books are updated regularly by way of ‘editions’; while researching one must try
to refer to the latest available edition.
