1. Introduction
Rapido is an online bike taxi aggregator based out of Bangalore, India. The
company was founded in 2015 in Bengaluru. It operates in more than 95
cities across the country.
Founded by Aravind Sanka, the company has sky rocketed into fame in the
few years of its launch and was appreciated by huge investors in the region.
They recently made headlines when they earmarked ₹200 Crore (~$28
Million) for marketing budgets.
The company was founded in 2015 as the Karrier by two IIT alumni and
a PESU alumni – Aravind Sanka, Pavan Guntupalli, and SR Rishikesh. In
September 2018, reports were that Rapido has over 15,000 registered
riders, with average rides of 30,000 per day. By July 2019, Rapido was
completing 3,00,000 orders every day. Among those who have stakes in
Rapido are HERO MOTOCORP chairman Pawan Mujal and
former Google India head Rajan Anandan.
In 2019, Rapido co-founder Aravind Sanka claimed that the company has
created more than 500,000 jobs in India. In November 2019, the company
claimed to have 1 crore registered users.

• To learn about the privacy policy of taxi service.
• To find out its potential in the market.
• To find out how it connect with its customers.

3. Interpretation
3.1 Business model
Rapido is focused on short distance commute in town, our
majority of customers are office goers. Our aim is to become
most affordable commute option for last mile connectivity.
We don’t have any full-time riders, we offer full-time
flexibility to our riders, means they can offer a ride when
they want, thus we are more of a bike ride sharing platform
as compared to other bike taxi's.

We’re pioneer in bike ride-sharing industry and we are the

first company in India who builds an on-demand bike ride
sharing platform for the user. With more than 150k users, we
currently operate in Gurugram and Bengaluru.

We charge a commission back from riders. The commission

rate is 20% of the ticket size.

According to government statistics, the total number of

registered two-wheeler in India is around 154 million which is
5 times the total number of 4-wheelers. We believe bike ride
sharing platform can definitely be one of the best solutions
to solve our commute problems. Bike Ride-sharing can be
the future of transport in India.

3.1 For customers – Rapido is economical, faster and

reliable commute option in town. We provide insurance on
every ride to our customers.
5

3.2 For riders- Rapido provide an extra income source for

bike owner who is travelling alone. We do have insurance
policies for our riders also.

So far, Rapido is doing well in both the cities and we are

touching more than 2500 completed rides daily. Soon we will
be launching in new cities.
Rapido is the service India needs. It focuses on affordability.
A cab or Auto-Rickshaw is just inefficient for single
passenger.

Things you have to know is, Rapido does not own any bikes
and does not hire drivers and call them their “Employee”.
They just provide a platform where demand meets supply. In
this case, passengers meet their drivers.

Their business model is similar to that if Uber and Ola.

They provide a platform, for which they charge a percentage

of the fare amount.
The Rapido app allows the user to book a ride, after which a rider
(called "Captain") arrives at the location. The fare includes a base
fare of ₹15 in addition to ₹3 for every kilometer of the ride.[7][8][9] The
"Captains" need to register through the Rapido-Captain app and get
validated by submitting the required documents. They can use
motorcycles, scooters, or e-bikes, but the vehicle cannot be older
than 2010.

3.4. New function

Rapido Bike Taxi launches new ‘power pass’ feature for app users

Guwahati: Bike-cum-taxi service application Rapido, which is currently

available in most cities of India including Guwahati, is planning to roll out a
couple of new features for the benefit of its customers.
6

In an effort to make daily commute more economical, the online application

for bike and taxi hire has launched a ‘power pass’ subscription programme
for customers. The ‘power pass’ will allow customers to book their rides
without any surge pricing levied on flat fares.

Interestingly, the ‘power pass’ is developed with an in-house tool that

analyses riding frequency, average riding distance and finally suggests a
best-suited pass for every individual user.

Speaking on the idea behind the unique tool, head of Rapido Power Pass,
Hiran Gunasekaran, said that every user is different and has a unique
preference and, understanding this, they were motivated to develop a one-
of-a-kind solution that will cater to everyone’s need.

“Our tool understands the user's behaviour and provides the best-suited
pass rather than showing multiple passes and confusing them,”

The subscription option has been rolled out to a limited set of customers
across a few cities in India but it is expected to be made available to all
Rapido customers in the coming months. Rapido claims that the pass users
are able to save up to 40% on their travel expenses. Also, the company
claims that pass users are riding 60% more frequently when compared to
other users. Rapido aims to have 1 million active pass users by June 2020.

Rapido is a Bengaluru-based company that provides technology-based

services for booking two-wheelers through its mobile application. Its
services have been widely received in south India, and the company is
gradually looking to expand its reach across the country.
7

Rapido started its operation in 2015 and in just four years they have
expanded the operations across the country. The organisation has around
5,00,000 ‘captains’, including women, across India.

It follows a dual helmet policy where helmets are provided to both the
captain and the passenger for their safety and security. Also, shower caps
are provided to passengers for their personal hygiene. The app has GPS,
live-tracking, SOS and live chat facilities too. It has an option for the users to
share …

This Bike Taxi Start-up Aims To Make Transportation Accessible to Next 200
million Users This Year Dealing with traffic congestion while commuting to
work is one common trouble faced by almost every daily commuter.
Increasing number of personal vehicles on the road is not only resulting in
daily congestion but also increasing pollution levels. Meanwhile, public
transport users are left with little choice between dealing with the huge
crowd in public transports or spend huge sums to afford comfortable cab
ride.

Bengaluru-based bike taxi provider, Rapido is working towards making

commuting easier and affordable by allowing users to book a two-wheeler
ride through its mobile app

But what if rides could not only be comfortable but also pocket friendly?
Bengaluru-based bike taxi provider, Rapido is working towards making
commuting easier and affordable. Founded in 2015 by Pavan Guntupalli,
Aravind Sanka and Rishikesh SR, Rapido offers a platform where users can
book a two-wheeler ride through its mobile app.

3.5. Growth
According to the company, Rapido is now operational in nearly 100 cities in
India. It claimed that the Rapido app has already hit the 10 million-mark
and is adding new users every day.
8

Currently, Rapido has over 15 million registered users and more than 15
lakh registered captains (ride providers).

Rapido witnessed a growth of five times in number of rides in 2019 with a

month-on-month growth of 20 per cent. “For Rapido, 2019 has been an
extremely successful year. Our customers have grown close to four times
and this is a testament to our overall growth and reach in the country. The
Rapido app has already hit the 10 million-mark and is adding new users
every day,”

Till date, Rapido has raised a total funding of INR 558 crore from various
investors. Some of its major backers include Westbridge AIF, Nexus
Ventures, Konark Trust, Sabre Investment, Skycatcher LLC, Bace Fund and
Integrated Growth Capital, among others. In August 2019, Rapido closed its
Series B funding round at INR 390.11 crore led by Westbridge Capital.

Talking about challenges, the concept of bike taxi is relatively new in India
with a certain perception attached to it. There are cultural and societal
challenges such as sitting behind a stranger, rider safety and so on. This
requires a certain amount of awareness which Rapido is trying to create.

Rapido has earmarked a marketing budget of INR 200 crore which will be
used to make transportation accessible to the next 200 million users. The
funds will be invested heavily in various, national and regional, marketing
campaigns across the country.

We’re currently at 15 million downloads and with the new campaign, we

want to reach 50 million downloads and we feel ATL is the way to go for
this. The marketing mix will include different media platforms, with a focus
on regional communication since we have a strong presence in tier II and
tier III markets. 2020 is going to be an even more aggressive year for us as
we plan to reach more than 200 cities,”
9

The company is currently looking to explore television and out-of-home

partnerships with well-reputed digital platforms. Apart from this, Rapido is
also aiming to get recognized as one of the top 10 consumer Internet
transactional companies in the country and all our focus is in this direction.

This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, process, use, share and protect
information about you. It also tells you how you can access and update your

including any websites operated by us such as RAPIDO WEBSITE or Mobile
Application, however accessed and/or used, whether via personal
computers, mobile devices or otherwise) and “ofline” (e.g., collection of
data through mailings, telephone, or in person) activities owned, operated,
provided, or made available by the Company. Our “online” and “ofline”
activities, in relation to facilitation of transportation services offered by

3.6. Future Plans

Currently with over 15 million registered users, Rapido aims to expand its
user base to 200 million this year.

Early Journey

Speaking with Entrepreneur India, co-founder Arvind Sanka revealed that

the idea of bike-taxi services came to them when the founders themselves
found it difficult to spend huge amounts on cab and taxi services on a daily
basis. “While we were working and earning a limited salary, it was difficult
for us to spend on cab and taxi services available in the city on a daily basis.
It is then when we realized that there isn’t a mode of commuting available
10

for early jobbers that is easy on pocket and yet convenient. Keeping in mind
this problem statement, we wanted to make transportation convenient,
accessible and affordable to the masses,”

The idea behind Rapido’s launch was to make intra-city transportation

convenient, affordable and accessible in the country. Apart from making
rides convenient, Rapido also opens up an earning opportunity for two-
wheeler owners who can list themselves on the platform as ride providers.

“Rapido saw the opportunity in using bikes to provide taxi-service and use
that free pillion seat to help earn some additional income for bikers, as and
when they liked,”

3.7. For visually-challenged Bike taxi app Rapido to launch new

features

Leading bike taxi pooling app Rapido is all set to launch

special and simplified features for the visually-challenged
commuters to make their travels more comfortable from
next month

Nearly 80-100 visually-challenged people use Rapido app

every day at different places to reach their destinations. We
are working on creating a simplified and user-friendly version
of our app for their easy usage. It will go live in the first week
of October,” Aravind Sanka, Co-Founder, Rapido,
told BusinessLine.

Founded in October 2015 by three IIT alumni, India’s first

bike taxi pooling service is currently available in 16 cities
across India and is adding two cities every month. It also
provides pillion riders with helmets and shower caps to soak
sweat.
11

Explaining the new features, Sanka said that the visually-

challenged users will now be able to activate the app using
their voice, which will be converted into text for selecting
destination. They will also be able to get their digital wallet
loaded with money using the driver’s

services, for automatic debiting after the travel.

“Usually, the visually-challenged people have fixed

destinations, like home and workplace. The Rapido captains
(drivers) mostly pick them up or drop at these destinations
every day,” he said. “We have also partnered with TrueCaller.
The visually-challenged people will have to just give a
missed call to us for auto-registration,” he added.
12

3.8. Huge potential

Co-founder Pavan Guntupalli maintained that taxi hailing

services like Ola and Uber cater to only 13-14 per cent of
commuters in cities like Bengaluru, as many others choose
alternative and affordable means of commuting. “Rapido
identified that need-gap and were curious to figure a way
out. With approximately 70 per cent of the motor vehicles
being two-wheelers in Bengaluru alone, Rapido sighted a
strong opportunity to seize and maximize it.”
Currently, the app is growing 30 per cent month-on-month
with 1.5 lakh registered ‘captains’ on the platform. It serves
30,000 daily rides with 10,000 monthly drivers on-board. The
captain can earn easily through a value-added “Redeem”
feature on the app by linking it with his bank account for
instant money transfer, unlike the cab drivers who have to
wait for a weekly or monthly payment cycle.

“Our customers, on an average, save 60 per cent-70 per

cent of the costs and spend 30 per cent- 40 per cent less
time in the traffic when compared to the cabs.” It’s captains
are trained professionals and the start-up also provides
insurance on all rides.

Rapido had raised an undisclosed amount in pre-Series A

funding from investors including Hero MotoCorp Chairman
Pawan Munjal, Google India Managing Director Rajan
Anandan and others. “Rapido is currently in an advance
stage of talks for the next round of funding,” said Sanka.
