Course Overview
Decision-making is the key to professional success. This course provides the necessary IT
tools/skills to develop efficient and effective decision-making. The focus of the course is on
analytical thinking using spreadsheets such as Microsoft Excel and Google sheet.

Course Objectives
After completing the course, students should be able to:
Use spreadsheet software to manage financial data and work with formulas and functions to develop
professional-looking worksheets. Also create charts and graphs by using spreadsheet lists (basic
database management). They should be able to use spreadsheet's editing and web tools for develop
a spreadsheet application using data tables and scenario managers.

Course Outcomes

CO1 Explain the fundamental components of a computer system, including the CPU,
memory, storage, input/output devices, and how they interact to process data.
CO2 Analyze the features available in spreadsheets and gain knowledge about basic as
well as advanced searching functions.
CO3 Utilize knowledge about mathematical and logical functions and be able to make use
of these functions to solve business problems. (K3, K4)
CO4 Analyze the applications of various text as well as date and time functions of
spreadsheet. (K4)
CO5 Evaluate various Slice and dice methods of spreadsheets to develop better decision

Unit I: Introduction to IT and Computer Fundamentals (No. of Lectures-10)


Introduction to IT, characteristics of computer systems, computer generations, case study
components of computer system, input/output devices, memory hierarchy, evolution of
programming languages, assemblers, compilers, basic concepts of operating system, database, and
networks

Unit II: Introduction to MS Excel and Look-up functions (No. of Lectures-10)


significance of spreadsheets, various components of Excel window, how to create, save
spreadsheets
overview of basic arithmetic functions, use of if function with example, nested if along with
examples
calculating grades of student using nested if, Lookup function in MS Excel, examples of Lookup
VLookup syntax and advantages, HLookup functions syntax and advantages

Unit III: Mathematical, Logical and Statistical analysis in MS-Excel (No. of Lectures-8)
