Target Audience
In today’s digital world, more devices are connecting to the network than ever before. A smart home, city, or grid
can have hundreds of Internet of Things (IoT) devices! The possibilities are endless.
The Exploring IoT with Cisco Packet Tracer course introduces learners to a home office network environment.
Learners use Cisco Packet Tracer to simulate a smart home network and practice IoT skills.

The online course is appropriate for learners at many educational levels and types of institutions, including high
schools, secondary schools, universities, colleges, career and technical schools, workforce training, and community
centers.

Prerequisites
The course is designed for learners who have taken the Getting Started with Cisco Packet Tracer course.

Certification Alignment
The course does not align to any certification exams, but Cisco Packet Tracer can be used in preparation for many
certification exams.

Course Description
Cisco Packet Tracer is an exciting network design, simulation, and modelling tool that develops learner skills in
networking, cybersecurity, and the IoT. Learners model complex systems without the need for dedicated
equipment. Packet Tracer is used in numerous Cisco Network Academy courses to help develop and assess the skills
necessary for successful course completion.
Cisco Packet Tracer contains many features to practice IoT simulation. Packet Tracer has a wide variety of sensors,
actuators, and smart devices that allows learners to create simulated smart homes, smart cities, smart factories,
smart power grids and more!
The course introduces learners to Packet Tracer and the setting up of a smart home network. A series of short, lively
videos, and activities help learners practice IoT skills using Cisco Packet Tracer.
The course includes:
• 2 modules
• 6 Cisco Packet Tracer Activities
• 1 assessment

In the first module, entitled Create Your Own Smart Home Network, learners review the various IoT devices
available in Packet Tracer, how to add them to the network, and how to connect them.
In the second module, entitled Environmental Controls and IoT Things in Packet Tracer, learners configure IoT
devices that react to sun, wind, rain, and humidity: these devices can be configured to take actions based on the
changing environmental values. Learners can even create their own IoT-thing and learn how to modify scripts to
make it function.
We recommend learners complete this course before starting other courses focused on IoT topics that include
Packet Tracer activities.
