EX1103

The document provides an example problem to select radial ball bearings for a designed shaft. It describes selecting a bearing with a basic load rating greater than or equal to what is required based on the load and design life. It then calculates the projected life of each bearing and the reliability of one bearing at the design life.

Example 11-3-1

EXAMPLE 11-3

Selection of Ball Bearings for a Designed Shaft

Problem: Select radial ball bearings for the shaft shown in Figure 10-5. The shaft was designed in
Example 10-1.
3
Units: khr  10  hr
Given: Load at R1 P1  16 lbf Load at R2 P2  54 lbf
Shaft speed n  1725 rpm Design life L  25 khr
Shaft diameter d  15 mm d  0.591 in

Assumptions: Thrust loads are negligible. Use the same bearings at R1 and R2

Find: The bearing fatigue lives at both shaft locations and the reliability of the bearing at R2 for the
design life of 25 khr.
Solution: See Mathcad file EX1103.

1. Calculate the design life in millions of revolutions.

L n
LD  LD  2587 million revs (a)
6
10  rev

2. Solve equation 11.19 for the required basic load rating using the load at R2. Note that the equivalent load in
this case is simply the applied radial load due to the absence of any thrust load. For the larger reaction load
of 54 lb at R2 , the required minimum basic load rating is:

1
3
C  P2 LD C  741.3 lbf (b)
3. From a manufacturer's catalog, select a bearing with a basic load rating that is at least this value. In this case,
consult the partial catalog reproduced in Figure 11-23. Normally, we would find the bearing that had the
smallest bore with the required load rating. The only 15-mm bore in the figure is #6302 with
Bearing 6302: C6302  1930 lbf
4. Calculate the projected life of each bearing with equation 11.19.
The L10 life for the bearing at R2 is

3
 C6302  6 rev
L10     10  L10  441 khr (c)
 P2  n

The L10 life for the bearing at R1 is

3
 C6302  6 rev
L10   P   10  L10  16958 khr
 1  n

This shows the nonlinear relationship between load and life. A 3.5x reduction in load results in a 38x
increase in fatigue life. These bearings are obviously very lightly loaded, but their size was dictated by
considerations of stresses in the shaft.
5. The calculations made thus far are for a reliability of 90%. The reliability of the bearing at the design life of
4
L  2.5  10 hr is found by solving the following equation for R (using a Mathcad solve block).

6. From Figure 11-23, this bearing's limiting speed is 18000 rpm, well above the operating speed of 1725 rpm.
