History of Logo Design

The history of logos goes back to ancient family crests, hieroglyphs, and symbolism. Early
versions of logos developed in the Middle Ages (around 1300 A.D.), as shops and pubs used
signage to represent what they did. The first modern logo designs were created in the early 1900s,
evolving alongside mass printing.
Even in these distant, old stretches of history, people and cultures were representing
themselves and their ideas with symbols and illustrations. Nowhere was that more apparent than in
Ancient Egypt, starting around the fourth millennium B.C.
Heraldry is a system of assigning design elements societal meaning and status. A certain set
of colors and shapes would represent a certain noble family. This set of imagery was combined to
create a unique coat of arms.
A logo is a graphic mark, emblem or symbol used to aid and promote public identification and
recognition. It maybe abstracts or figurative design or include the text of the name it represents as in
a wordmark.
Logos have different meanings. They represent signs and symbols in our visual environment.
We see them on television, billboards, newspapers, and magazines. They are printed on clothes,
buses, and notebooks.
One of the most basic level of logos are symbols. Each word, font, color, shape, or image in
given logos represents something.

Computer Software

Software is a collection of instructions that enable the user to interact with a computer, its
hardware, or perform tasks. Without software, most computers would be useless.

Three Types of Computer Software

1. Systems Software or Operating system is the software used by the computer to translate inputs
from various sources into a language which a machine can understand. It coordinates the different
hardware components of a computer. Example is the Microsoft.

2. Programming Software is a kind of computer software which is used exclusively by computer

programmers.

3. Application Software is used to interact with a computer. Popular examples of application

software are the Microsoft Office suite which includes Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Applications we
use to connect to the internet are internet explorer and Mozilla Firefox.

How important is computer software in making painting today?

The first step is drawing your image. Then scan it into your computer and finally, use a computer
program to transform your work by cropping, editing, enhancing, lightening, darkening, shading,
adding color, layering, styling, or just about any other editing graphic you can think of.

To get started with digital painting, the following could be of great help.

1. GIMP - a free and open-source raster graphics editor used for image retouching and editing.
2. Photo Editor - an application used for editing photos.
3. Photoshop - turn on photos into fantastical works of art. Crop, combine retouch and restore.
4. Paint (windows) - for Laptop / desktop PC. A simple raster graphics editor that gas been included
with all version of Microsoft windows.
5. Inkscape - a professional quality vector graphics software which runs on Linux, Mac OS X and
Windows desktop computers.

The software above has several tools that provide all the colors that is needed to make the
coloring in your painting easy.

Software tools used in digital printing.

1. Burn Tool - darkens the image. Just drag the tool over the image.
2. Crop Tool - changes the size of the image. Select the area you want to crop and press enter.
3. Eraser Tool - erases part of the image in a certain layer by flattening the image or go through
every layer to delete the part.
4. Type Tool - puts texts in a picture.
5.Pencil Tool and Brush Tool - these tools draw or paint a line. To change the color of the paint
brush, click on the color picker.

Commonly Used Application Software

1. Word Processor is a piece of application software that allows the user to create, edit, format, and
print written documents.

the user to enter and manipulate data, and to perform accounting functions.
3. Adobe Photoshop is a raster graphics editor.
4. PowerPoint is a presentation program, created by Robert Gaskins and Dennis Austin. It gives
you access to the familiar tool you already know. Design, edit, view, present or share presentations
quickly.
5. Publisher is a desktop publishing application from Microsoft, differing from Microsoft word in that
the emphasis is placed on page layout and design rather than text composition and proofing.

Basic Parts of the Computer and their Function

1. The computer case is the metal and plastic box that contains the main components of the
computer, including the motherboard, central processing unit (CPU), and power supply. The front of
the case usually has an On/Off button and one or more optical drives.

2. The monitor works with a video card, located inside the computer case, to display images and
text on the screen. Most monitors have control buttons that allow you to change your monitor's
display settings, and some monitors also have built-in speakers. Newer monitors usually have LCD
(liquid crystal display) or LED (light-emitting diode) displays.

3. The keyboard is one of the main ways to communicate with a computer. There are many different
types of keyboards, but most are very similar and allow you to accomplish the same basic tasks.

4. The mouse is another important tool for communicating with computers. Commonly known as a
pointing device, it lets you point to objects on the screen, click on them, and move them.

There are two main mouse types: optical and mechanical. The optical mouse uses an electronic
eye to detect movement and is easier to clean. The mechanical mouse uses a rolling ball to detect
movement and requires regular cleaning to work properly.

5. A printer is used to print documents, photos, and anything else that appears on your screen.
There are many types of printers, including inkjet, laser, and photo printers. There are even all-in-
one printers, which can also scan and copy documents.

6. Speakers and headphones are output devices, which means they send information from the
computer to the user—in this case, they allow you to hear sound and music. Depending on the
model, they may connect to the audio port or the USB port. Some monitors also have built-in
speakers.

7. Scanners a device that scans documents or captures images from photographic prints, posters,
magazine pages, and similar sources for computer editing and display.

applications.

Sketching is a favorite way for graphic designers to come up with some quick and unique
ideas. This way, the designers know what is in their mind regarding a particular subject. These
instant sketches are different design concepts, which can be developed into a complete logo design.
Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth
strokes for sketching.
Sketching for logo design is a way to create a unique piece of design work. It is a trial-and-
error process. With the help of sketching you can have some sense of how your logo design should
finally look like. Aspects of logo designing such as knowing the brand and its message and target
customers are considered for sketching.

A cartoon is a type of illustration, possibly animated, typically in a nonrealistic or semi-realistic

style. The specific meaning has evolved over time. but the modern usage usually refers to either: an
image of series of images intended for satire, caricature, or humor; or a motion picture that relies on
sequence of illustrations for its animation. Someone who creates cartoons in the first sense is called
cartoonist, and in the second sense they are usually called an animator.
The concept originated in the Middle Ages, and first described a preparatory drawing for a
piece of art, such as a painting, fresco, tapestry, or stained-glass window. In the 19th century,
beginning in Punch magazine in 1843, cartoon came to refer-ironically at first - to humorous
illustrations in magazines and newspapers. In the early 20th century, it began to refer to animated
films which resembled print cartoons.

Origin of Cartoon

What may be seen as possibly the earliest political cartoon is a mysterious woodcut permitted
Le Revers du Jeudes Suysses (The Other Side of the Swiss Game), fashioned in 1499. In this, the
pope, the Holy Roman Emperor, and the kings of France and England can be seen playing cards
while under the table. A swiss soldier heaps the decks in satirical annotations on French ambitions in
Italy (the support of elite Swiss soldiers was essential to France).
At about the same time, Pope Alexander VI was potrayed as a devil and in another drawing a
Jesuit priest is given a wolf’s head. Perhaps the most memorable sketch of this period-and one
exactly datable and attributable to a known artist - was an anti-Protestant woodcut by Erhard Schoen
of 1521, showing the Devil playing a pair of bagpipes, the bellows of which are depicted as the head
of Martin Luther.
A number of other artists of this period also fashioned heavily allegorical and often fantastical
drawings which have resonances in the modern cartoon. Conversely, Italy at the hands of the
Carraci family and others such as Pier Leone Ghezzi - the first artist to earn a living solely by this
kind of work-that the modern cartoon can be said to have been molded.
It was also in Italy that these early comic strips flourished, and almost uniquely so until
collections of such drawings (especially those of Ghazi) found their way across Europe, and Hogarth
began his sequence of “modern moral subjects” in England in the1730s.

2. Someone who creates cartoons in the first sense is called cartoonist.
3. A political cartoon, a type of editorial cartoon, is a graphic with caricatures of public figures,
expressing the artist’s opinion.
4. The first artist to earn a living solely by this kind of work that the modern cartoon can be said to

5. A gag cartoon is most often a single-panel cartoon, usually including a caption beneath the
drawing.
6. Cartoons bring out good memories of the childhood’s carefree life.
7. A cartoon character can easily tap into viewer’s deepest emotion.
8. A well- designed cartoon character actually possess numerous super powers that any human
spokesman would hardly compete with.
9. Cartoon character works in favor of increasing the engagement and contributes to achieve the
desirable business goals.
10. The marketers use a clever cartoon character design as a tool to form a strong customer - brand
relationship.

There are basically five types of Cartoon Drawings:

a. Gag Cartoon – is a single-panel cartoon usually including a caption beneath a drawing.

b. Comic Strip Cartoon – is a sequence of drawings in boxes that tell an amusing story, typically
printed in a newspaper or comic book.

c. Animated Cartoon – is a motion picture that is made from a series of drawings, computer graphics,
or photographs or inanimate objects (such as puppets) and that stimulates movement by slight
progressive changes in each frame.

d. Editorial Cartoon/Political – is also known as a political cartoon, an illustration or comic strip

containing a political or social message, that usually relates to current events or personalities.

e. Illustrative Cartoon – portrays specific ideas in a direct and simple manner. They help in
explaining stories, teaching aids or advertisement.

What is comic?
Comic is a story told using sequential panel images. It is a medium used to express ideas
through images, often combined with text or other visual information.

A comic strip is a sequence of drawings in boxes that tell an amusing story; typically printed in
a newspaper or comic book, but now can also be seen in web pages.
A comic book began in 1897 upon the publication of The Yellow Kid in McFadden’s Flats
considered to be the first comic book.
The first comic strip by a Filipino is “The monkey and the Tortoise” by Jose Rizal published in
Truebner’s Record in London in 1889. It was part of a piece on Asian folktale. In 1929, in the pages
of Liwayway Magasin, Tony
Velasquez introduced “Kenkoy”. Velasquez is considered to be the Father of
Filipino Comics.
In every comic art, the main goal is to communicate the information clearly. One of the effective
ways to relay the messages clearly is to create with the use of different elements and principles.

Elements of Comic Art

1. Panels - the spaces that contains a single scene, usually in the shape of a square or rectangle.
2. Caption - these set the stage for readers and gives information about characters or scenes.
3. Speech Bubbles - these show readers what the characters are saying aloud.
4. Gutters - the spaces between panels that contains little gaps in time. Readers can imagine what
may have occurred in the “pauses”.
5. Suspension of Disbelief - the moment in stories or comics when readers temporarily believe that
the impossible can happen.
6. Thought Bubbles - these show readers that the characters are thinking.
7. Sound Effects - a word that phonetically imitates or resembles the sound that it describes.

Principles of Comic Art

1. Contrast - emphasizing differences using light and dark colors
2. Balance - arranging the elements in a piece so that there is an equality from one side to the other
3. Rhythm - repeating an element that will cause the viewer’s eye to move around each element
4. Emphasis - contrasting light with dark creates emphasis
5. Movement - use of light/dark to attract attention and guides eyes to subjects activity.
