Ms Hanh’s writing
In the present day, the arguments surrounding the most vital formal subject have been growingly divisive.
While some people opine that History should be given more attention, others claim that courses related to
Science and Technology are predominant. This essay will elaborate on both of these viewpoints and argue in
favour of the first one.
On the one hand, there are some convincing pieces of evidence for the roles of history. Firstly, the acquisition
of historical knowledge can evoke people’s patriotism. By knowing how their countries had been formed
and experienced upheavals, students will appreciate the sacrifice of their ancestors. Hence they can have
stronger motivation to become upright citizens to contribute more to their countries. Secondly, history can
help learners gain a profundity in terms of arts and culture. It is undeniable that these domains are closely
intertwined, therefore, looking at history can reveal their correlations. For instance, while artistic works
created in peaceful time often compliment the beauty of nature, those in war time usually involve humans’
sacrifice and sufferings.
On the other hand, I ardently support the paramount importance of Science and Technology. To begin
with, these fields are undoubtedly more applicable in a modern life. Since the world is changing at a rapid rate,
graduates will have an easier time finding financially fulfilling job positions and making practical contributions
to the enhancement of human’s living conditions. By contrast, people who major in History can only select their
profession based on a rather limited scope. In addition, Science and Technology will promote learners’
creativity. They will be given numerous opportunities to explore new possibilities and invent remarkable
devices instead of being confined by rigid information.
All in all, it is evident that History can offer outstanding benefits to students in terms of boosting their
patriotism and offering abundant knowledge about culture. However, I am convinced that Science and
Technology should receive more attention since they can open more career choices and stimulate creative
thinking.
Task 1: The bar chart shows the percentage of small , medium, large companies which used social media for
business purposes between 2012 to 2016. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main
features, and make comparisons where relevant.
In 2012, 26% of small businesses appeared on social media while the proportion of medium businesses were slightly
higher. After two years, while the figure of the former one increased to 35%, that of the latter experienced an
exponential surge to nearly 50%. In 2015, the presence of both business models on social media saw a drop to 30%
before growing to a high point of around 50% in the final year.
Amongst three sizes of business, large companies appeared to have the largest proportion of social media usage when
nearly 80% of them utilized these platforms to promote their products and services, which remained stable in the first
three years. However, similar to the previous two forms of business, the figure witnessed a notable decline to 53% in
2015 before rebounding to the initial highs.
