Furthermore, the problem extends to the ethical considerations surrounding the use of AI in project
management. Issues such as data privacy, bias in algorithms, and transparency in decision-making
processes are critical concerns that must be addressed to ensure the responsible and ethical
deployment of AI technologies in project management.
Another aspect of the problem is the potential disruption to traditional project management roles and
structures caused by the increasing automation and intelligence brought about by AI. Project
managers may fear being replaced by AI systems or may feel overwhelmed by the complexities of
integrating AI tools into their existing workflows.
Additionally, the lack of standardized frameworks and best practices for implementing AI in project
management further complicates the adoption process. Organizations often face challenges in
identifying the most suitable AI solutions for their specific project management needs,
implementing these solutions effectively, and measuring the impact of AI on project outcomes.
4
Addressing these multifaceted challenges requires a holistic approach that considers technical,
organizational, ethical, and human factors. Organizations must invest in training and reskilling
programs to equip project teams with the necessary AI skills, establish clear guidelines for ethical
AI use, and develop comprehensive strategies for integrating AI technologies seamlessly into
project management processes. Collaboration between AI experts, project managers, and other

Chapter two
2. Literature Review
This chapter deals with analyzing the existing body of scholarly work on the subject of Artificial
intelligence. It aims to provide an overview of the key theories, concepts, methodologies, and
findings that have been discussed by researchers in the field. By synthesizing and summarizing
7
these studies, this review seeks to identify any gaps in the current literature and propose potential
avenues for future research. Additionally, it will critically evaluate the strengths and limitations of
the existing literature to establish a foundation for the research presented.
In recent times, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has gained considerable prominence owing to the
escalating demand for automated systems that can function independently of human oversight. The
current landscape of artificial intelligence is vibrant, witnessing the emergence of numerous novel
models undergoing research and development activities across diverse domains like science,
economics, and engineering. Project management (PM), as a professional discipline, employs
specific project management methodologies to oversee, govern, and carry out the planning, design,
and implementation of projects from inception through to completion.
8
Artificial intelligence has become increasingly relevant in today's world, shaping both scientific
exploration and business practices. Despite its growing prominence, there remains much to be
discovered in this field. The emergence of artificial intelligence in the era of the internet has
triggered significant adjustments among markets and users to accommodate inevitable changes.
However, in many industries, there is still hesitance towards fully integrating AI due to uncertainties
about the path forward, as noted by Adel Belharet, Urmila Bharathan and Neha Madhavan et al.
(2020)
This uncertainty impedes the widespread implementation of artificial intelligence and has
highlighted the need to establish boundaries and ethical principles to ensure responsibility and
respect for all stakeholders (Gunnar Auth, Oliver Jokisch and Christian Dürk 2019, Butt, 2018 ).
Nonetheless, there is a growing recognition within companies of the immense potential of AI, with
some even envisioning a future where humans and AI collaborate (Candelon et al., 2021). Together,
they can leverage internal factors to drive innovation and enhance organizational performance,
fostering growth (Butt, 2018)
The existing literature provides valuable insights into the potential of artificial intelligence. Studies
such as Butt (2018) have demonstrated the positive impact of innovation on company performance,
while Farzaneh Shoushtari , Ali Daghighi b , Ehsan Ghafourian (2024) suggest that the era of data will
lead to a significant expansion of AI applications. Furthermore, a plethora of other articles outline
specific areas where AI can deliver advantages, including project control ( Butt, 2018), production
management M. Wauters and M. Vanhoucke, 2019), and fostering innovation within companies
(Tharaka de Vass, 2023). Additional research has shown the benefits of AI in project duration
forecasting (M. Wauters and M. Vanhoucke, 2019), supply chain management (Renato Lopes da
Costa, Álvaro Lopes Dias, 2022), and the procurement process (Renato Lopes da Costa, Álvaro
Lopes Dias, 2022).
Moreover, AI can also play a crucial role in evaluating different IT strategies (Tharaka de Vass,
2023) and supporting the development and implementation of strategic roadmaps through project
management (Tharaka de Vass, 2023). By exploring these various applications in depth, businesses
can unlock the full potential of artificial intelligence and drive innovation and growth across a wide
range of sectors.
9
Palpable suggested that on the transformative potential of artificial intelligence, it is evident that the
integration of AI technologies offers numerous opportunities for organizations to enhance
efficiency, optimize processes, and drive strategic decision-making. One key aspect that researchers
have emphasized is the role of AI in fostering innovation within companies. By leveraging
advanced AI systems, businesses can streamline operations, automate repetitive tasks, and unlock
new insights from data to drive creativity and breakthrough developments.
Furthermore, AI applications have shown promise in improving project management practices, such
as project control and forecasting. Studies like Tharaka de Vassa et al. (2023) highlight how AI can
enhance project monitoring, risk assessment, and resource allocation, leading to more successful
project outcomes. Similarly, in production management, AI tools offer capabilities for predictive
maintenance, quality control, and supply chain optimization, as demonstrated by Butt et al (2018).
These advancements not only drive operational efficiency but also contribute to cost savings and
enhanced competitiveness in the market.
Supply chain management stands out as another area where AI is making a significant impact.
Research by Butt et al (2018) showcases how AI-powered predictive analytics and machine learning
algorithms can optimize inventory management, demand forecasting, and logistics planning, leading
to improved supply chain performance and customer satisfaction. Moreover, in the procurement
process, AI tools can streamline supplier sourcing, contract management, and vendor evaluation,
thereby enhancing efficiency and reducing costs, as noted by M. Wauters and M. Vanhoucke, et al
(2019)
Artificial intelligence in project management is said to be one of the trends of the future, with
automation and human-machine collaboration. Although artificial intelligence applied to the project
management area is not a novelty, its potentiality in all knowledge areas is still questionable (Renato
Lopes da Costa, Álvaro Lopes Dias, 2022). It is recognized the benefits of artificial intelligence
tools to optimize and perform tasks that are rule-based, such as scheduling, cost estimation or risk
10
assessment. However, in areas that require empathy, human resources management or decision
making the artificial intelligence applicability is more questioned. In the research by (Renato Lopes
da Costa, Álvaro Lopes Dias, 2022) the results of the questionnaires showed that artificial
intelligence is not considered to support leadership and cognitive skills. From the same research it
also showed some evidence that there is a lack of knowledge of artificial intelligence in project
management. Complementary to this approach Younus (2021) set an artificial intelligence-powered
communication and engagement system that was an alternative to the conventional system. The
research concluded that it is missing human interaction and that it is emotionless. However, this last
limitation can have its advantages as it eliminates eventual bias in decision making. With all this it
is vital to reinforce the research in these areas so that knowledge is obtained in a level of certainty
that allows companies and individuals to understand and comprehend the broader line of
applicability of artificial intelligence in project management. The study of such prolifically
addressed subjects as artificial intelligence and project management may not be a soft task.
However, the resort to a systematic literature review has proven to be a resourceful tool in this case.
After defining the objective of the study, the process of defining keywords, platforms in which to
research, and the criteria for selecting the final articles to analyses, was quite simple.
The publication by Ahmed Muayad Younus (2021) explored the application of artificial intelligence
in the field of project management. The author delved into how AI technologies could enhance
various aspects of project management services, such as planning, scheduling, resource allocation,
risk management, and decision-making. Younus discussed how AI could automate repetitive tasks,
provide insights through data analysis, and improve overall efficiency in project management
processes. The publication highlighted the benefits of incorporating AI tools and techniques in
project management, including increased accuracy, cost savings, and better decision support.
11
Furthermore, the author addressed potential challenges and considerations when implementing AI in
project management services, such as data privacy concerns, integration with existing systems, and
the need for specialized skills among project managers.
Jesús Gil Ruiz, Javier Martínez Torres, and Rubén González Crespo collaborated on this research in
2020 to explore the impact of AI technologies on project management. Through their study, they
examined how AI tools could be integrated into various project management tasks to streamline
processes and boost efficiency. The authors discussed specific applications of AI, such as predictive
analytics, natural language processing, and machine learning, and how these technologies could aid
project managers in making informed decisions and optimizing resource allocation.
Moreover, the publication highlighted case studies and examples of real-world applications where
AI has been successfully employed in project management. Overall, the study emphasized the
transformative potential of AI in reshaping project management practices and driving organizational
success.
