WELCOME TO THE BLOGOSPHERE!

4.1. n
Blogging, when it first started, was not an overnight sensation. The first blog appeared on
a website in 1994. Five years later, in 1999, the total number of blogs on the internet was
only 23! However, by 2021 that figure had gone up to a staggering 500 million. What’s
more, about 6% of internet users read blogs regularly. Someone, somewhere in the world,
is creating a new blog (or vlog) every half a second. The blogosphere has exploded.
4.2. n
These days, there are blogs about everything and anything – from cookery and lifestyle
advice to social issues and politics. Many offer pure entertainment, with music, comedy,
acting and dance. Some may take the form of a diary, where the author expresses intensely
personal thoughts, others remain detached and professional – the best ones are often
a mixture of both. Perhaps this is why so many people enjoy reading them.
4.3. n
Most bloggers and vloggers do it for fun, not for a living. However, some have attracted
armies of followers, opening up a world of new opportunities. When he was 17, Ryan
Henderson started making short, funny videos of himself and his friends. He posted them
on a web channel. Within four years his vlog had gained 3 million subscribers. Six years
later, Ryan was cast in his first feature film.
4.4. n
Are blogs and vlogs killing books and publishers? Some people believe that they are. Others
point out that successful bloggers are skilled writers, and that they actually encourage
people to read books as well. Moreover, some bloggers, and vloggers too, have started
producing books. For example, the fashion vlogger Zoella published a book, Girl Online,
in 2014. It sold over 75,000 copies in its first week alone.

WHY MANY TEENS CHOOSE MOVIES RATHER THAN BOOKS
Because teens have a very busy life, they have no time to read a book. That’s why, they find it
Nina: more practical to watch a movie, since it only takes a couple of hours.
It’s more engaging. Reading a book is an activity which you do alone. When you watch

and cook or order some food to enjoy while watching.
Although reading a book opens up your imagination, not everyone is able to make out a clear
picture of what is described. For example, writers like Dickens usually give so much detail and
Daniel: use so many adjectives to describe a person or a place that young readers can’t understand
these descriptions.

Book selection for this week:
Skeleton Creek: Ryan’s Journal by Patrick Carman
The book is about two young detectives: Ryan and Sarah. They try to solve a mystery
in their town, but after an accident, Ryan is stuck at home and Sarah can’t meet him.
Still, they manage to work together. The story is broken into two parts: every few pages
of Ryan’s diary, you get a code for a website where you can watch a video recorded by
Sarah. Reading Ryan’s journal is fantastic, but when you add in the videos, it becomes
simply spectacular.

IS ANYONE HERE?
This time, I remembered I was lying in bed and I heard clearly the wind and the snow
blowing against the window. A tree branch kept beating on the glass. The sound annoyed
me so much that I decided to silence it, if possible. I thought I got up and tried to open the
window. It was locked: something I knew when awake, but had forgotten. ‘I must stop it,
nevertheless!’ I muttered, knocking my fist through the glass, and stretching an arm out
to catch the troublesome branch; instead of which, my fingers closed on the fingers of a
little, ice-cold hand!
The great horror of the nightmare took hold of me: I tried to draw my arm back, but the
hand held on to it, and a most melancholy voice sobbed,
‘Let me in—let me in!’
‘Who are you?’ I asked, struggling to free myself.
‘Catherine Linton,’ it replied, ‘I’ve come home: I lost my way on the moor!’
As it spoke, I could just see a child’s face looking through the window. I tried to pull my
hand away but the creature would not let me go. ‘Let me in!’ it cried. I was mad with fear.
‘How can I!’ I said at last. ‘Let me go, if you want me to let you in!’
The fingers relaxed, I pulled mine through the hole, quickly put the books up against it,
and covered my ears to shut out the voice.
I seemed to keep them covered above a quarter of an hour; yet, as soon as I listened
again, there was the same cry going on!
‘Go away!’ I shouted. ‘I’ll never let you in, not if you beg for twenty years.’
‘It is twenty years,’ said the voice, ‘twenty years. I’ve been away for twenty years!’
Then began a quiet scratching outside, and the pile of books moved as if pushed forward.
I tried to jump up, but could not move; and so I shouted in fear.
To my confusion, I discovered the noise was not imaginary: quick footsteps approached
my door; somebody pushed it open with a strong hand. I sat up shivering and sweaty.
The visitor stopped in the doorway muttering to himself.
At last, he said in a half-whisper, plainly not expecting an answer, ‘Is any one here?’

THE NATIONAL HERO
Horatio Nelson was born as the sixth child in a poor, but educated family. Although
he was a small and weak child, Nelson went to sea when he was only 12 years old.
7.1. However, his career developed quickly as he changed ships, showing great
talent for sea strategy. At the age of twenty he became one of the youngest ever captains
in the Royal Navy.
Nelson had a reputation for being an inspirational leader and was loved by the men
under his command. He often fought side by side with his sailors, who were led by the
example of his personal bravery. 7.2. However, among the many injuries Nelson
received in them, he lost an arm and the sight in his right eye.
A genius tactician as he was, Nelson was ready to take risks. During the battle of
Copenhagen he was sent a signal by Admiral Parker to withdraw. Nelson put his telescope
to his blind eye and said to his officer, ‘I really do not see the signal.’ 7.3. It is perhaps
the most celebrated act of disobedience in history. It was that stubborn decision that was
the beginning of the expression ‘turn a blind eye’ which means to consciously refuse to
acknowledge something.
A number of monuments and memorials were constructed across Britain and abroad, to
honour Nelson’s memory and achievements. 7.4. They admire the hero of the seas,
not knowing that till his death he suffered from seasickness.

as it attracts millions of people.
B. So the fight was continued and no sooner than four hours later, the victory
was his.
C. His first years in the navy were a mixture of both routine experience and high
adventure.
D. They helped him win the hearts of English people and become the most
acknowledged national hero.
E. Thanks to the mutual understanding and cooperation between the captain
and his crew, they were victorious in many sea battles.
