B.Tech (ME) 3rd Semester Final Examination, January 2021

Basic Thermodynamics (ME 2101)

Full Marks: 50 Time: 1 Hour 30 Minutes

Time: 1 hours and 30 minutes Full marks 50

This question paper has two halves. Each half is of 25 Marks.

Answers to all questions of each half should be written together.

FIRST HALF

Answer question number 1 and any two from the rest.

1. Show that the entropy change of the universe will be necessarily positive due to the mixing of two
fluids initially at different temperatures. You may assume that the heat capacities of the two fluids are the
same. (7)

2. (a) State the conditions to be fulfilled for a system to be in thermodynamic equilibrium? (3)

(b) Air at the rate of 75 kg/min enters a steady flow device at 2 bar, 1000C at an elevation of 100 m
above the datum. The same mass leaves the control volume at 150 m elevation from datum with a
pressure of 10 bar and temperature of 3000C. The inlet and exit velocities are 40 m/s and 20 m/s. During
the process heat is entering the device at the rate of 54000 kJ/hr and the enthalpy of air increases by 8
kJ/kg. Calculate the power developed by the device. (6)

3 (a) What do you mean by polytropic process? Write down a suitable expression for the heat transfer in
polytropic process in terms of work done during the process. (4)

(b) A heat pump is used to maintain an auditorium at 250C, when the atmospheric temperature is 100C.
The heat load of the hall is 1500 kJ/min. Calculate the power required to run the heat pump, if its COP is
30% of COP of the Carnot heat pump working between the same temperatures (5)

4. (a) State the differences between a refrigerator and a heat Pump. (3)

(b) An iron block of mass 50 kg at 500 K is put into a lake which is at temperature of 285 K. Calculate
the entropy changes of iron block and the lake. Also, Calculate the entropy change of the universe. (6)
SECOND HALF

(Question No. 5 is compulsory. Answer any two from rest of the questions.)

5. (i) How will (a) the specific humidity and (b) the relative humidity of the air
contained in a well-sealed room change as it is heated?

(ii) Explain that for water, a sub cooled state is also compressed state and super
heated state is also a rarefied state.

(iii) A fuel air mixture contain 30% excess air. What is the equivalence ration of the
mixture? [2+2+1=5]

6. The ultimate analysis of a coal sample used in a power plant boiler has the
following compositions: Carbon(C) = 55%; Hydrogen (H2) = 3.5%; Oxygen( O2) =4%;
Nitrogen(N2) =1.25%; Sulphur (S) = 0.4% and rest is ash. If the coal is burnt in a boiler
with 15% excess air, determine the mass of air required for burning 100 kg of the coal
and equivalence ratio. Assume that all carbon burns to CO 2 in the furnace.

7. Steam flows in a pipeline at 4 MPa pressure is expanded in a throttling calorimeter .

After expanding to 0.1 MPa, the temperature is found to be 130 0C. Find the quality of
steam in the pipe. What is the maximum moisture content at 4MPa that can be
determined with this set up if at least 10 0C of superheating is required after throttling
for accurate reading? [10]

8. (a) Define specific humidity and relative humidity of moist air and derive the
relation between the two.

(b) Air enters a heating section at 95 kPa, 12°C, and 30 percent relative humidity at a
rate of 6 m3/min, and it leaves at 25°C. Determine (i) the rate of heat transfer in the
heating section and (ii) the relative humidity of the air at the exit.
