1. Introduction
The Department of Electrical Engineering is one of the various departments under the
Defence Engineering College with a primary goal of preparing students for successful
technology based careers. It’s primarly goal to generate highly qualified professionals and
technical manpower in the field of Electrical engineering for the Defence Forces in particular
and the Nation as a whole.
The electrical engineering is one field of engineering that deals with the generation,
transmission,distribution and cotroling of electrical power on the basic understanding of
courses mathematics, physics, fundamentals of electrical engineering sciences, computer
programming and interfacing, electrical measurements. Besides, they acquire knowledge in
electrical and electronics, analog and digital circuits, microcontrollers, power supply devices,
design and technology of electrical systems. As this program is multi-disciplinary that
integrates Basic Science and Engineering, could play a key role in improving the living
standard of the society in the world. To advance the progress and development of the
electrical engineering program for the realization of Ethiopia growth transformation plan
(GTP) well-trained graduates are required. The graduates in the electrical engineering
program will be trained in the focus of addressing the transformation of Agricultural
Development Led Industrialization (ADLI) to Science Technology and Innovation (STI) Led
Industrialization.
To achieve this, the electrical engineering program has designed and implemented a well-
organized B.Sc. curriculum. However, the electrical engineering curriculum is not
harmonized at the national level. Additionally, the implementation of the curriculum
designed by different universities mainly focused on evaluating the performance, skills, and
attitude of the students at the course level. Such an evaluation method needs mapping with
program learning outcomes to assess the overall competence of the graduates. Therefore,
additional program outcome measurement techniques have to be set. Currently, the ministry
of education intends to set and implement exit examinations for selected programs. The main
aim of the exit exams is to assess the graduates’ performance and overall understanding of
the profession with respect to the graduate profiles and the learning outcomes of the program.
Consequently, quality education will be ensured and a common getaway for the professional
license and equal market opportunity will be created for all graduates from different
universities. For this purpose, this document was developed to address the aforementioned
problems.

Why this competency needs to be prepared separately for EDU?
Graduates from this program expected to serving in any of several approved commercial
sectors occupations or in the armed forces of the country after graduation. However, the
competencies developed for graduates of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in related
programs and streams may not fully align with the objectives and competencies established
for graduates of the Ethiopian Defence University College of Engineering.
The Ethiopian Defense University have a much focused mission, they tend to offer a heavy
dose of STEM courses. The engineering programs that offered in the College of Engineering
is especially designed to enhance and modernize various defense sectors across different
engineering fields. This program majors are more focused on military technology studies;
aiming to producing technologist and engineers in various military aspect and the electrical
engineering curriculum is not harmonized at the national level.As a result, specialized courses
with a military focus have been incorporated into all programs. In light of this, a separate
competency framework has been developed specifically for the Control Engineering
program at the Ethiopian Defence University.

3. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE DOCUMENT
It is important to set competency areas of Electrical Engineering to measure how much
graduates are acquired skills, knowledge, and attitudes. The following shows us the
significance of setting competencies and identifying core courses of the program;
To set competencies that help to assess the basic skills, knowledge, and attitude of
graduating students;
To systematically identify the core courses which will be included in the exit
exam;
To give clues in expected competency and learning outcomes for graduates and
host Universities;
4. Graduates Profile
After the successful completion Electrical Engineering, the graduates would have the
following profiles:

8. CONCLUSION
The exit examination will have a vital role in improving academic programs’ quality and
effectiveness. It is clear that evaluating the graduates against the core competencies set out by
the curriculum and in line with the industrial needs would be important to enhance the trust of
the employers in the graduate’s skills. To realize this, it is important to have a guideline that
could be used as a reference to prepare for a comprehensive exit exam that could address the
relevant focus areas of the program. Based on the identified graduate profiles, competencies,
and learning outcomes four-course categories and 14 mandatory courses for the exit exam in
Bachelor of Technology (B-Tech.) in Electrical Engineering(control Engineering
Stream) are developed.
7
The exam questions based on the selected courses are believed to test the cognitives,
psychomotors, and affectives domains that are expected as the attainment of the
competencies and learning outcome of Bachelor of Technology (B-Tech.) in Electrical
Engineering(control Engineering Stream).
