SECTION A (ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS): [40 MARKS]
1. a) Let your Universal set U = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10}. And let
sets A = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}, B = {2, 4, 6, 8} and C = {1, 4, 7, 10}. Determine
the characteristic vector of the following:
(i) ( A  C )1
(ii) ( A  C )  B
(iii) ( A − C )  ( B − A)

(iv) A  C [4 marks]

b) For each of the following relations on the set x : x  Ζ and 1  x  12,


(i) List all the ordered pairs belonging to the relation R = {( x, y ) : 2 x = 6 y} .
(ii) Determine the transitive closure of R? [6 marks]

2. a) Let R be the relation on the set A = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7} defined by


the rule (a, b)  R if the integer (a + b) is divisible by 3. List the
elements of R and verify if R is reflexive, symmetric, antisymmetric
and transitive and determine its closures where applicable?

b) Find the minterm and maxterm for the function F(x, y, z)
when F =  ( 0, 2, 4, 6 ) ? [4 marks]

3. a) Draw the Hasse diagram for divisibility on the set,


{1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 18, 30, 36}? [8 marks]

b) (i) Determine the adjacency matrix and adjacency list for


graph below.
(ii) Determine the degree of each vertex and the degree sequence?
(iii) Perform a BFS and DFS using A as your source

4. a) In a survey held in a college, out of 175 students:


100 offered Mathematics, 70 Computing, 40 offered French.
30 offered Mathematics and Computing; 28 offered Mathematics
and French; 23 offered Computing and French. 18 offered
all three.
(i) Find the number who offered exactly one subject.
(ii) Represent information on Venn Diagram. [6 marks]

b) Find the composition ( f g ) and ( g f ) in the following cases:

(i) f ( x) = x 2 + 1 and g ( x) = (2 x)

(ii) f ( x) = e x and g ( x) = 5 x

(iii) f ( x) = (− x + 1) and g ( x) = x 2 − 8

(iv) Show that in (i) ( f g )  ( g f )
