Social Studies Questions
– Set 1
Question 1: Case Study
Analysis
Preamble: Ghana relies on various sources of
energy to meet its growing demand. Recently,
there have been challenges with energy supply,
including frequent power outages and high
energy costs. The government is exploring
different strategies to enhance energy security
and promote sustainability.

1. Identify any four types of energy sources

Ghana should consider apart from its main
energy source currently.

2. Suggest four ways Ghanaians can conserve

energy from Ghana’s current source to reduce
energy waste and frequent power cuts.

Case Study: A small town in Ghana is primarily

dependent on hydroelectric power from the
Akosombo Dam. However, due to prolonged
droughts, the water levels in the dam have
significantly decreased, leading to reduced
power generation. As a result, the town
experiences frequent blackouts, affecting
businesses, schools, and households. The local
government is considering alternative energy
sources to complement hydroelectric power and
ensure a stable energy supply.

Questions:

1. Identify and describe three alternative

energy sources that the town could explore to
complement hydroelectric power. Explain how
each source can contribute to energy stability.

2. Analyze the potential environmental and

economic impacts of transitioning to each of
the alternative energy sources identified.

3. Propose a comprehensive plan for the town

to implement energy conservation measures
that can reduce the overall energy demand
and alleviate the pressure on hydroelectric
power. Include at least three specific
strategies in your plan.

Question 2: Critical Thinking

and Application
Scenario: A high school in Accra has launched
an energy conservation campaign to educate
students and staff about the importance of
saving energy. The campaign includes activities
such as energy audits, installation of energy-
efficient appliances, and promoting behavioral
changes to reduce energy consumption. The
school aims to reduce its energy usage by 20%
within a year.

Questions:

1. Explain the concept of energy conservation

and why it is important for Ghana’s
development.

2. Discuss three practical energy conservation

strategies that the high school can implement
as part of its campaign. Provide specific
examples of how each strategy can be applied
within the school environment.

3. Evaluate the potential challenges the school

might face in achieving its energy reduction
goal and suggest solutions to overcome these
challenges.

Question 3: Problem-Solving
and Critical Analysis
Scenario: A rural community in the Northern
Region of Ghana has limited access to the
national electricity grid. To address this issue, a
non-governmental organization (NGO) is
planning to install solar panels in the community
to provide a reliable source of electricity. The
project aims to improve the quality of life for
residents and support local economic activities.

Questions:

1. Describe the advantages of using solar

energy in rural communities in Ghana. Include
at least three benefits in your answer.

2. Analyze the potential barriers to the

successful implementation of the solar panel
project in the rural community. Consider
factors such as cost, technical expertise, and
maintenance.

3. Propose a set of recommendations for the
