PROBLEM SET NO.1

CE 415 – Principles of Reinforced/Prestressed Concrete Design

Name: Score:
SR Code/Section: Date:

Solve the following problems. Show your complete solution and round off your final answer to the
nearest ten thousandths. Box your final answer/s.

1. A reinforced concrete rectangular beam has a width of 300 mm and an effective depth to bottom
bars of 450 mm. The beam is reinforced with six 32-mm bottom bars and two 28-mm top bars
located 65 mm from the top of the beam. Concrete strength f’c = 34.5 MPa and steel strength fy =
345 MPa. Calculate the ultimate moment capacity of the beam. Use the provisions of NSCP 2015.

2. Determine the maximum concrete and steel stresses at the point of maximum positive and negative
moments.

3. A hallow beam is shown below. Assume f’c = 28 MPa and fy = 345 MPa.
a. Calculate the required tension steel area when Mu = 800 kN.m
b. What is the balanced moment capacity of the beam?
c. What is the maximum design moment strength?
d. Calculate the required tension steel area when Mu = 1200 kN.m

4. A 6 meter long simply supported reinforced concrete beam has a width of 350 mm and an overall
depth of 470 mm. The beam is reinforced with 2-28 mm ø compression bars on top and 4-28 mm

MPa, and steel yield strength fy = 415 MPa. Determine the following :
a. Depth of compression block assuming both tension and compression steel yields.
b. What is the ultimate moment capacity of the beam in kN-m?
c. Determine the additional concentrated live load that can be applied at midspan if the dead
load including the weight of the beam is 20 kN/m.
5. Calculate the ultimate moment capacity of the beam shown below. Assume f’c = 21 MPa and fy =
345 MPa.

6. Given the following properties of a rectangular concrete beam: b = 280 mm, d = 480 mm, f’c = 21
MPa, fy = 415 MPa. The beam is reinforced for tension only. Determine the design strength under
the following conditions.
a. When the beam is reinforced with three 25 mm diameter bars.
b. When the beam is reinforced with four 25 mm diameter bars.
c. When the beam is reinforced with seven 25 mm diameter bars.

7. A reinforced concrete beam having a width of 310 mm and an overall depth of 550 mm is reinforced
with 2-25 mm compression bars and 8-25 mm tension bars, both having fy = 415 MPa. Concrete
protective covering is 50 mm from the centroid of the bar group. Unit weight of concrete is 23.5
kN/m3. Concrete strength f’c = 21 MPa.The beam is supported as shown below. L1 = 8m, L2 = 3m.
Other than the weight of the beam, the beam will support a uniform live load.
a. Determine the balanced tension steel area.
b. Determine the ultimate moment capacity of the beam.
c. Determine the maximum uniform service live load that the beam can carry.

8. A reinforced concrete simple beam, 10 m long is made of an inverted equilateral triangle whose
side measures 600 mm. The concrete of the main reinforcement is assumed to be 85 mm above the
vertex of the beam. As = 4000 mm2, f’c = 20.7 MPa and fy = 414 MPa. Use the provisions of NSCP
2015.
a. How far is the neutral axis from the outermost compressive fiber of the concrete.
b. What is the strength reduction factor of the beam?
c. What is the nominal moment capacity of the beam?
d. Determine the ultimate distributed load that the beam can carry. A rectangular concrete
beam has a width of 300 mm and
