MAT1112 - Tutorial #04
1. Let the universe of discourse be the set of integers ℤ. Translate following statements into logical
notation.
(i) For each value of x, we can find a value of y such that 𝑥 + 𝑦 = 0.
(ii) There is some value of x such that , for all values of y, we have 𝑥𝑦 = 0.
(iii) There is some value of x and some value of y for which 𝑥𝑦 = 15.
(iv) For all values of x and y, it is true that 𝑥𝑦 > 0.
2. Suppose that the universe of discourse is the set of integers ℤ. Let 𝑝(𝑥, 𝑦) be the statement
“𝑥 − 𝑦 = 0”. Determine which of the following propositions are true and which are false:
(i) 𝑃(2, 3)
(ii) 𝑃(3, 3)
(iii) 𝑃(𝑥, 𝑦)
(iv) ∀𝑥∃𝑦𝑃(𝑥, 𝑦)
(v) ∃𝑥∀𝑦𝑃(𝑥, 𝑦)
3. Suppose the universe of discourse is the integers. Let 𝑃(𝑥) be the predicate “𝒙 + 𝒚 > 𝟏”and let
𝑄(𝑥) be the predicate “𝒙 𝒚 < 𝟔”. Write down the negation of following propositions.
(i) If 𝑎, 𝑏 ∈ ℤ, then 𝑎2 − 4𝑏 ≠ 2.
(ii) If 𝑎, 𝑏 are positive real numbers, then 𝑎 + 𝑏 ≥ 2√𝑎𝑏.
