Module 1: Intended Learning Outcomes
08/02/2023

After completing this module, the student must be able to:

ILO1. Define and describe the basic concepts of Thermodynamics and
Energy in own words.
ILO2. Explain the application of Zeroth, First, and Second Law of
Thermodynamics.
ILO3. Compare the macroscopic and microscopic concept of energy.
ILO4. Recognize the significance of the course to Mechanical Engineering
practice.

Thermodynamics is the science
08/02/2023

• that deals with heat and work and those properties of

substances that bear a relation to heat and work.
• that is based on experimental observation.
• of energy and entropy.

Thermodynamics stems from the Greek words therme

(heat) and dynamis (power), which is most descriptive of
the early efforts to convert heat into power..

Principles Involved in Thermodynamics

THERMODYNAMICS 1 – Module 1 10
The 1st Law of Thermodynamics:
08/02/2023

“Energy can be neither created nor destroyed during

a process; it can only change forms.”
1st Law of Thermodynamics = Energy Conservation
Energy has been defined as the capability to produce an effect. It
can be stored within a system and can be transferred (as heat or
work, for example) from one system to another.

THERMODYNAMICS 1 – Module 1 11
The 2nd Law of Thermodynamics:
Kelvin–Planck Statement
08/02/2023

It is impossible for any device that operates on

a cycle to receive heat from a single reservoir
and produce a net amount of work.

Clausius Statement
It is impossible to construct a device that
operates in a cycle and produces no effect
other than the transfer of heat from a lower-
temperature body to a higher-temperature
body.

THERMODYNAMICS 1 – Module 1 12
The 3rd Law of Thermodynamics:
08/02/2023

“The entropy of a pure crystalline substance at absolute zero

temperature is zero.”

Molecular activities
(molecules stop moving)
ceases at absolute zero
Temperature.
