Go through the first parts of

Language Focus in the digital
lesson. The last thing shown
on the screen should be like
this. Don’t click play yet.
Listening activity (10mins): Listen and fill in the blanks. Show slide 5. Play the audio in the
digital lesson, part Language Focus (True/False: Matt goes on vacation every month of the
year.), and let them fill in the blanks. Show slide 6 then practice speaking by changing the words
in color.
Jenny: When did you go on vacation last year, Matt?

Matt: In August, Jenny.

Jenny: What was the weather like?

Matt: It was very hot and sunny. We ate lunch and dinner in the garden every day.

Jenny: Did you go on vacation in March, too?

Matt: No, I didn't. I sometimes go on vacation in March or April, but it's often very cold.

Jenny: Do you go on vacation in November or December?

Matt: No, I never go on vacation in November or December. There's a lot of wind in

November and there's sometimes a lot of snow in December. They're not good
months to go on vacation.

SPEAKING It was very hot and sunny

Activity 1: Language presentation/review (5 mins)

Add letters to complete the weather words. Show slide 7. Elicit from students the answers that
match with cues given in the sentence. E.g.: What’s the weather like when we go swimming?
Hot or cold? Is it hot in the summer or fall?
1 We often go swimming in the summer because it’s hot.
.

2 It’s cold and snowy today, so remember to wear a thick jacket and socks.
.

3 Hurricanes often form over warm tropical oceans.

.

4 Rainy season causes floods in our city.

.

5 I love Da Lat for its beautiful foggy forests and fresh air.
.

Activity 2: Listening (5 mins)

a. Listen to Joe and Emma. Circle the correct information. Give Ss a moment to read the
statements and ask T any questions they might have about meaning, then play the recording.
1. Emma’s favorite month is January/June.

2. Emma lives in the north/south of her country.

3. Joe likes/doesn’t like hot weather.

4. Joe likes spending time on trains/boats.

5. Emma likes/doesn’t like hot weather.

Activity 3: Language practice (5 mins)

Complete the sentences from the dialogue, then listen again to check. Show slide 8. Tell Ss
that all the missing words are modifiers: they come before an adjective or a verb and modify
its meaning (making it more or less intense). Give a few examples of modifiers such as very
(used to modify adjectives) and really and quite (used to modify adjectives and verbs). Ask
students to work in pairs to try to fill in the gaps. Then play the recording again for them to
check their answers.
1 It’s really beautiful.
.

2 It is usually very cold in the winter.

.

3 I live quite close to the ocean.

.

4 I really like water sports.

.

5 I don’t like it when the temperature is very high.

.

Audio script
Joe: What’s your favorite month, Emma?

Emma: I like January.

Joe: Why?

Emma: My favorite season is winter. I love snow. I like it when I wake up in the morning
and everything is white. It’s really beautiful.

Does it snow a lot where you live?

Joe:
Yes, it snows a lot. I live in the north of my country and it is usually very cold in
Emma:
the winter. How about you? What time of year do you like the best?

I like the summer. I love hot weather.

Joe:
What do you do when the weather is hot?
Emma:
I live quite close to the ocean so I love going to the beach. I really like
Joe: watersports. I love swimming and I sometimes go sailing. Do you like hot
weather?

No, I don’t like it when the temperature is very high.

Emma:

If students need more practice …

Explain that you will signal the positive modifiers really and very with the thumbs-up sign, quite
by holding your hand out flat, and not very and not really with the thumbs-down sign. Divide
the class into three groups and ask short simple questions such as: Is the weather hot? Do you
like Paris? Is it windy today? Point to the groups in turn – they have to answer the question in
chorus according to the hand signal you give them.
For example:
Q. Is it beautiful here in the fall? A. Yes, it’s very beautiful; It’s quite beautiful; No, it’s not very
beautiful.
Q. Do you like skiing? A. Yes, we really like it; We quite like it; No, we don’t really like it, etc.

Activity 4: Pronunciation (5 mins)

Where do you think the main stress goes in the sentences? Underline the stressed words.
Practice saying them. Remind them that the principle nouns and adjectives are usually stressed
because they carry the most important information. Suggest that there are 2-3 stressed
syllables in a sentence then let them try first. Read the sentences aloud (with the stress pattern
given below) for students to check their answers and repeat.
1 My country is beautiful in the spring.
.

2 The weather is hot in the summer.

.

3 The winter here is very cold.

.

4 There is a lot of wind in the fall.

.

5 It is usually warm in the summer.

.

Activity 5: Discussion (20 mins)

Interview 3 – 5 classmates about their plans for their favorite seasons. Demonstrate what
students have to do by getting a strong student to ask you the questions and you answer. Then
give students some time to interview their peers. Monitor and help with ideas and vocabulary.
Encourage the listening student to make notes (keywords only) in the table about what their
partner says.

Optional extra activity:

Elicit the names of eight cities from various countries around the world and write them up on
the board. Put students in pairs and ask them to take four cities each and write one or two
sentences to describe the weather there. They can use the internet to find out the actual
weather or they can guess based on their general knowledge. They should then take turns to
ask their partner what the weather is like in the other four cities.
