History of Basketball

 Basketball was invented in December 1891, by James Naismith.

 For that first game of basketball in 1891, Naismith used as goals two half-bushel peach baskets,
which gave the sport its name. The first basketball was a soccer ball.
 The first baskets were wooden peach baskets hung on the walls!
 The game was originally played with nine men on each team.
 About 1895, a number of U.S. colleges adopted the game.
 The first professional league was formed in 1898.

Court and equipment

 The standard American basketball court is in the shape of a rectangle 50 feet (15.2 metres) by 94
feet (28.7 metres); high school courts may be slightly smaller.
 There are various markings on the court, including a center circle, free throw lanes, and a three-
point line, that help regulate play.
 A goal, or basket, 18 inches (46 cm) in diameter is suspended from a backboard at each end of
the court.
 The metal rim of the basket is 10 feet (3 metres) above the floor. In the professional game the
backboard is a rectangle, 6 feet (1.8 metres) wide and 3.5 feet (1.1 metres) high, made of a
transparent material, usually glass; it may be 4 feet (1.2 metres) high in college.
 The international court varies somewhat in size and markings. The spherical inflated ball
measures 29.5 to 30 inches (74.9 to 76 cm) in circumference and weighs 20 to 22 ounces (567 to
624 grams). Its covering is leather or composition.

Fundamentals

Jump ball-A method of putting the ball into play. The referee tosses the ball up between two
opponents who try to tap it to a teammate. The jump ball is used to begin games and, in the
professional game, when the ball is possessed by two opposing players at the same time.
Shooting-- is a fun skill to practice. To be a good shooter, you must have great form. If you have good
form, your shooting will become easier and more accurate.

Ball Handling--To have great ball handling, you should always have total control of the ball. Good ball
handling skills are important for every position. Rebounding--If a team wants to win, every person on the
floor must rebound. If one person does not do their job, the whole team will suffer. Rebounding is all
about hard work.

Blocking -Any illegal personal contact that impedes the progress of an opponent who does not have the
ball.

Passing- Throwing, batting, or rolling the ball to another player. The main types are:

(1) the chest pass, in which the ball is released from a position in front of the chest,
(2) the bounce pass, in which the ball is bounced on the floor to get it past a defensive opponent,
(3) the roll pass on the floor,
(4) the hook pass (side or overhead), and
(5) the baseball pass, in which the ball is thrown a longer distance with one hand in a manner similar to a
baseball throw.

Pivot-A movement in which a player with the ball steps once or more in any direction with the
same foot while the other foot (pivot foot) is kept at its point of contact with the floor.
Screen, or pick-Legal action of a player who, without causing more than incidental contact,
delays or prevents an opponent from reaching his desired position.
Violations

Traveling- (walking with the ball) Progressing in any direction in excess of the prescribed limits,
normally two steps, while holding the ball.
Turnover-Loss of possession of the ball by a team through error or a rule violation.

The Objective

 The objective of the game is to score more points than the opposing team. Starting the game of
basketball consists of 48 minutes of playing time, which is divided into four 12-minute quarters.
 Each team is allowed to have five players on the court at a time.
 During the tip-off, the referee tosses the ball up so one player from each team can try to tap the
ball to a teammate.

The game of basketball consists of 48 minutes of playing time, which is divided into four 12 minute
quarters.

Each team is allowed to have five players on the court at a time.

During the tip-off, the referee tosses the ball up so one player from each team can try to tap the ball to a
teammate.

Scoring

 You can score between one and three points per shot.
 A free throw is worth 1 point, a basket in front of the three-point line is 2 points, and 3 points for
a shot behind the 3- point line

More Rules

If you have the ball, you must dribble to move on the court.

• You can not push the ball away from the basket when someone else has taken a shot and it is going
down into the basket. This is called goal tending.

Dribbling Rules

 You can not dribble, pick up the ball, and then start dribbling again.
 You must pass it to someone else:
 You are not allowed to dribble the ball across the half-court line and then go back again.
 You cannot charge a person.
 You can not hit, push, kick, or hurt another player. This is known as fouling. If you have 6 fouls,
you can no longer play in the game. This is called fouling out.
 If you foul someone, the other team gets the ball on the out-of-bounds line.
 If you foul someone while they are shooting, they get 2 free throws.

Basic rules

 If you want to play basketball for fun, you have the possibility of playing on your own. But you
can also play team games with either 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 players on each teams. Teams can be mixed,
with boys and girls, or not.
 On a competition level, a team is made up of 5 players playing on the court and 7 players sitting
on the bench that can be used for substitution during the whole period of the game.

Positions

Each player is assigned a position when playing. This

position is usually.

determined by the height of the player. • The tallest

player on the team usually plays "center" also known
as "position 5",

while the medium size ones play "forwards" or

"position 3 and 4".

The shortest players then play "guards" or "position 1

and 2".

Scoring

 A player scores when he manages to throw the ball into the basket, with the ball passing through
the basket from above the hoop. Scoring a basket increases the team's score by three (3), two
(2), or one (1) point.
 If the player successfully shoots from outside of the 3 points line, the basket is worth 3 points,
otherwise it is worth 2 points.
 It is also possible to score one point when shooting from the free throw line, after a foul for
instance.

Play

• Play begins with a jump ball at center court.

• Each team is given a hoop to try to score on and a hoop to defend.
• Movement of the ball can take place by and individual or between two players. For an individual player
to move with the ball on the court, the player must dribble the ball.
• Play stops when the ball goes out of bounds.
• Play also pauses when a basket is scored or a foul is called.
• If a basket is scored, the opposing team must take the ball out of bounds
underneath their basket and pass the ball inbounds to begin play again.
• Defense for one team takes place when the opposing team has
control of the ball. • The most basic defense is called "man-to- man"
defense. Each player guards a player on the opposing team.
• As a general rule of thumb, good defense is to stay between your
man and the basket you are defending.
Basketball has 4 quarters, each quarter 10 min.
• Usually there are breaks into either halves or quarters.
•At the end of the game, the team with the most points wins.
• If there is a tie, the teams play a short overtime 5 min period to
determine the winner.
