3 Now, we will discover some key vocabularies before we watch the video.
Let’s read the sentences. The words in bold are used in the video. Match the
words with the definitions (a–f).

• Number 2, the word we have to find out the meaning is turns and it

• Number 3, shallow-it is an adjective and it means not deep, so 3-d.
• Number 4, smooth, another adjective and it is nice to touch, not rough,
so 4-c.
• Number 5, decay, it is a verb and it means breaks up and goes back into
nature, so 5-a.
• Number 6, lay, it is also a verb, and it is when a female bird pushes an
egg from her body, so 6-b.
Next, you are going to watch a video about the final journey of the sockeye
salmon. Let’s guess the order you think the situation from a to g happen?

• Number 1: Which US state are the rivers in? It is Alaska. You can hear
at the very first of the video, 0.00–0.08 they say These cold rivers are in
Alaska.
• Number 2: Are the sockeye salmon born in the river or in the ocean?
The answer is in the river. You can hear in the 2nd and 3rd they say(
0.09–0.22) The rivers are full of a type of fish called sockeye salmon.
The sockeye salmon are born in these rivers, but they swim to the
ocean.
• Number 3: How many salmon finish the long journey? The answer is
One in every thousand. You can hear in the video they say (0.23–0.44)
Then, at the end of their life, they return to the river and start their
final journey, hundreds of kilometres up the river. It can take weeks,
and only one in every thousand salmon will finish it.

is The head turns green, the mouth grows longer, the skin turns red
and become smooth. You can see these detail in the video (1.15–
2.01)Over the next few weeks, the head of the male salmon turns green.

• Number 5: Do scientists know why this happens? The answer is No. In
the video, it is said that (1.15–2.01) Scientists still don’t know why this
happens.
• Number 6: Where were the salmon born? The answer is In the shallow
water. We can see in the video 2.02–2.17 Finally, the sockeye salmon
arrive in the shallow water where they were born.
• Number 7: What do the males do in the shallow river? The answer is
Fight over the females. We can see in the video 02.18–2.15 The males
start to fight over the females
• Number 8: What do the females do? The answer is Lay their eggs. We
can see in the video 02.18–2.15 Then the female salmon lay their eggs
in the bottom of the river.
• Number 9: Why is it important for the parents’ bodies to die and decay?
The answer is They become food for the baby salmon. We can see in the
video 02.46–end Finally, both parents die and their bodies decay into
the river and become food for the next salmon which grow and start
the journey again.
6 Vocabulary in context
Watch the clips from the video. Choose the correct meaning of the words and
phrases.
1. The rivers are full of a type of fish, called sockeye salmon. To be full of
means have lots, so the correct answer is A.
2. Then, at the end of their life, they return to the river and start their final
journey. Return is a verb and it means go back, the correct answer is B
3. At the beginning of the journey, these huge brown bears are the biggest
danger. Danger is a noun and it means it can kill them, the correct answer is A
4. If the salmon get past the bears, their bodies start to change. Get past in this
situation means the bears don’t catch them, the correct answer is B
5. Then the female salmon lay their eggs in the bottom of the river. In the
bottom means below the water, the correct answer is B
