English language
proficiency is perceived as
one of the Philippines key Students will read the
advantages in the global informational text
market. The Philippines is
the third largest English-
speaking country in the
world after the United States
and Britain. But at present,
a growing evidence points to
the country’s deteriorating
English proficiency.
The continuing
deterioration in English
nowadays has become widely
accepted. The manifestations
are incorrect grammar,
inability to use the English
language in a connected
discourse and poor organized
writing. (Soriano, 2000).
A Researcher who
teaches English has long
been burdened with hard
pressing concern of the
significant deterioration of
the English proficiency of the
students in High School,
wherein they lack the
mastery of the English
Language as reflected on the
student’s performance in
National Achievement Test
2018-2019. Moreover,
majority of them also have
inappropriate grammar, poor
communication skills both in
oral and written and this was
manifested also in their
recitations, low results in
quizzes, tests and seat
works.
The question of where
lies the problem of poor
English proficiency of high
school students is a matter
that needs an immediate
action.
