FRANCISCO BALAGTAS Y DELA CRUZ
A prominent Filipino poet, and is widely
considered one of the greatest Filipino literary
laureates for his impact on Filipino Literature.
VIRGILIO SENADREN
ALMARIO
National artist for Literature. Wrote narrative poem,
Mariang Sinukuan and a Collection of criticism: Ang
Makata sa Panahon ng Makina
His poetry often exuberant in expression and passionate
in its sympathy for the poor and the working class.

ANDRES BONIFACIO
- Andres Bonifacio Philippine patriot, founder and leader of the
nationalist Katipunan society, who instigated the revolt of August
1896 against the Spanish.

SEVERINO REYES
A highly-acclaimed giant in the Tagalog literature of the early
20th century is Severino Reyes. He was born on February 11,
1861, and with his unequaled controbutions, he became the “Ama
ng Sarsuwelang Tagalog”.
He was also nicknamed “Don Binoy”. In his entire career, he was
able to make 26 zarzuelas and 22 dramas. Apart from being the
“Father of the Tagalog Zarzuela”, he is also the “Father of
Tagalog Plays”.
EMILIO JACINTO
the editor of Kalayaan, the Katipunan newspaper, and the first
issue alone attracted thousands of members.
He used the alias “Pingkian” in the movement. In Freedom, he
also used the alias ” Dimasilaw.” In symbols, It manifested
Jacinto’s extraordinary interest in light, to bring true light to the
Filipino people and to his opposition to false “light”.
NICK JOAQUIN
He was a playwright, novelist and novelist speaker at
cultural events during Marcos regime.
He was an editor of Philippine Graphic Magazine, a
publisher of mirror weekly. Writer of Philippine Inquirer
and Isyu.
ROLANDO S. TINIO
He was from gagalangin Tondo , Maynila.
Rolando S. Tinio was a playwright, thespian, poet, teacher, critic,
and translator, who marked his career with prolific artistic
productions. As a stage director, his original insights in the scripts
he handled brought forth productions notable for their visual
impact and intellectual cogency. He revived traditional Filipino
drama, re-staging old theater forms like the ‘sarsuwela’ and
opening a treasure-house of contemporary Western drama.
CIRILO F. BAUTISTA
Filipino poet, critic, and writer of nonfiction Cirilo F. Bautista was
conferred the Order of National Artist for Literature in 2014 by
late Philippine President Benigno C. Aquino, Jr. He had
exceptional achievements and significant contributions to the
improvement of the literary arts in the Philippines.
REGION IV A : CALABARZON
MARS RAVELO
- A Filipino graphic novelist born in Tanza, Cavite.

- Mars Ravelo was one of the most successful Filipino comic artists.
He was the creator of the famous super heroine 'Darna', and the
highest paid comic artist of his time. After World War II, Ravelo
realized the Filipinos were in need of a superhero. He created the
heroic super heroine 'Varga' in Bulaklak magazine in 1947.
BIENVENIDO LUMBERA
A Filipino poet, critic and dramatist. Recipient of the Ramon
Magsaysay Award for Journalism, Literature and Creative
communications.
Dr. Lumbera’s literary work encompasses multiple genres, from
poetry to stage plays and librettos. His love for these different
genres stems from his childhood. Born in Lipa, Batangas, on April
11, 1932, to Timoteo and Carmen Lumbera.
FRANK G. RIVERA
Playwright, director, actor, poet, lyricist, songwriter and cancer
survivor Frank Rivera
Born in Paete Laguna
Mastered the genre of poetry Textula
3 Palanca memorial awards for Literature 4 national book awards,
Aliw, Gawad.
Founder of “Sining Kambayoka”.
REGION IV B: MIMAROPA
NVM GONZALES
- A Filipino fiction novelist, short story writer, essayist, poet
and teacher who articulated the Filipino spirit in rural,
urban landscapes.
- First Commonwealth Literary Contest in 1940
- Republic Cultural heritage award in 1960.
Gonzalez expressed passion for music at a young age. He learned
to play the violin and made his own guitars by hand. For college,
he attended National University at Manila, Philippines, but did not
finish his degree. During his time there, he wrote for
the Philippine Graphic and later edited for both Evening News
Magazine and Manila Chronicle.
During his writing career, Gonzalez wrote five novels, eight
short fictions and multiple essays, with his work translated into
languages like English, Chinese, German, Russian, and
Indonesian. His first novel, The Winds of April, was published in
1941 and won honorable mention for the Commonwealth Literary
Awards. Unfortunately, most of the copies were destroyed when
the Japanese occupied the Philippines during the war.
REGION V: BICOL REGION
POTENCIANO GREGORIO SR.
as a Bicolano musician. He was the composer of
"Sarung Banggi" (One Evening), a waltz that is
the most famous song in the Bikol language.
REGION VI: WESTERN
VISAYAS
ALICE TAN- GONZALES
Born of a Filipino and a Chinese and speaking
Hiligaynon at home, she wrote her first short
story in Hiligaynon and discover her deep
connection with the language in the process.
REGION VII: CENTRAL
