DESK TOP PROGRAMMING (MDU AND CCU)


“PROGRAMMER” is a program that has been developed for end of line programming. Howev-
er with the growing demand to reprogram MDU and CCU components in the field and the up-
grading of the software it has become neccessary for the branches to program these
units.Programmer does not have the capabilities to change parameters or hours.It will auto-
matically zero the hours.This is neccessary from a legality point of view.
Desk top programming on the MDU and CCU must be done using “PROGRAMMER”.

Overeview of MDU CCU programming:


The programming is divide into two sections namely “HEX programming and INI files(parram-
eters).

When the control unit is new or “empty” ,”HEX” files need to be loaded onto the control unit.
“HEX” Files are the System files and are the same for all the machines unless different soft-
ware is used for example: The 4206D “Scraper” will use different “HEX” files than the standard
due to different application.

Once the Correct “HEX” file has been loaded, it is neccessary to load the INI files.How this is
done in “programmer” is via The VIN no. The VIN number is linked to the INI files,so provided
you fill the correct VIN no in the machine data page, it will automatically down load the correct
ININ files for that truck.

How you will be kept abreast of the upgrades:


When a Upgrade is done or a change implemented the “HEX” files are distributed via a email,
and a service bulletin is issued to explain the new software or “HEX” files.Once you have been
deemed competent to program you have signed that you will only use this programming write’s
while under Bells employment and not for any personal gain,you will be given access to the
programming website for Desktop programming only and you will go onto the emailing list. The
new Hex files and INI files are all put onto the programming website as the upgrades oc-
cur.These can be down loaded by the people who have these programming write’s.

Harware needed for Desk top programming:


Necessary for desk top programming

Power pack:
You can go the expensive way - R3500-00, Xytron DC power supply, from Communica (Ven-
dor)-1 in my lab for viewing
2xbatteries with charger R2000-00
AC to DC converter, from one of these electronic shops. Voltage output would need to be 24v
and amperage rating of 5amps.
Programming cable for MDU CCU:
RS 232 - P/N 207965
Power cable for MDU CCU:
Power cable - P/N - 208600

Software needed for Desk top programming:

Programmer 4.2.1 software.


Hex files and INI files.

How to carry out the replacement of a failed component:


The way Bell is going to implement the changing out of these units is buy replacing both.
Example: A customer has a failure on the MDU. We as Bell will program a new MDU and a
service exchange CCU with the latest software.This will be sent to the customer who will then
return both the failed MDU and the old CCU to the person who performed the desktop program.
The old CCU will be put back as a service exchange fr the next failure.Note: The Hours of the
machine must be recorded on the job card.

Before you commence programming:

It is essential that all the info on the Machine data page is sent to you before you comence
programming.It is also essential to make sure that hours are recorded on the job card as the
hours of the truck will be zero after programming.

Before you start programming you need to make sure that you com port is configured and ac-
tive on your computer.To do this go to “My Computer” icon and double left click on the
mouse.You need to locate “Control panel” icon and double left click on the mouse.Then go to
the “Systems” icon and double left click on the mouse. You need to find “Device manager” and
left click on it,look for “+Ports [COM & LPT]” and left click on the + next to Ports [COM & LPT].
This will show you which port the is your serial communuication port. For example if it says
COM 2 is your serial “communication port”, then when you are in “programmer” you will con-
figure COM 2 for programming.

Connecting Hardware for CCU programming:

Connect your RS 232 to the serial communication port of the PC or notepad.Connect the SIX
pin duetch connector from the RS232 programming cable to the CCU SIX pin deutch connec-
tor of the power supply cable.Connect the CCU to the power cable.(Note: The plugs cannot
be fitted incorrectly).Connect the power supply cable to power supply. Switch power supply on.
Open programmer 4.2.1

Step1: Check and see that the you are connected to


the CCU as shown. If not connected follow
step 2,3,4 respectively .If connected follow
steps 2 and 4 repectively.

Step 2: Click on the CD(disc)

Step 3: Select the com port

Step 4: Select new software, new hardware.

Step 5: Click on “file” and the and go to production
HEX folder and double left click on it .Remem-
ber were ever you saved the Production HEX
folder you would have to go and find it.

Step 6: Double left click on the CCU production HEX


file.

Step 7: Click on “Start” to download the HEX file.

Step 8: Pop up screen will appear and press yes to


start programming

Step 9: The blue lines will run accross the windows as


illustrated to show the programmimg is taking
place.

Step10: Once complete click on the “close” button.The
HEX programming of the CCU is complete.

Step 11:To start the parameter loading (INI files) one


must first erase the old files buy clicking on the
“Erase” button.

Step 12:This is where it will indicate when each page is


deleted by bringing up the name ofthe page in
red.

Step 13:The programmer needs to fill in all the necces-


sary data in the open blocks.He also needs to
make sure that both the VIN no are correctly
enetered.Once all the info is enetered correctly
the programmer can click on “download”.

Step14: Note that where it indicates each page in Red


when you erased it will change the font colour
to Blue as each page is downloaded.

Programming the MDU:


Before programming the MDU you need to to disconnect the CCU power cable from the CCU
and RS 232 six pin duetch connector programming plug. Connect the four pin duetch connec-
tor plug from the RS232 programming cable to the MDU four pin deutch connector plug of the
power supply cable. Connect the MDU to the power cable.(Note: The plugs cannot be fitted
incorrectly).Connect the power supply cable to power supply. Follow the same procedures as
the CCU to get connected. Power up the MDU.

Step1: Check and see that the you are connected to

start programming
