REACTION RATE AND CONCENTRATION

Aim: to investigate the effect of change in sodium thiosulfate concentration

on the rate of a reaction of sodium thiosulfate with hydrochloric acid.

Introduction: The rate of reaction is the speed at which reaction takes

place, defined as proportional to the increase or decrease in concentration of a
product per unit of time. The more concentrated the solutions of one or more
reactants, the faster the reaction. In this lab we are investigating the rate of
reaction between hydrochloric acid and sodium thiosulfate. The reaction will
be followed by measuring the time needed for the reaction mixture to become
opaque so that the cross drawn under the conical flask became invisible.

Materials ( the amount for two runs ) :

- Hydrochloric acid solution, HCl - 50 ml

- Sodium thiosulfate solution Na2S2O3 - 300 ml
- Distilled or deionized water - 200 ml
- Conical flask - 100 cm³
- Measuring cylinders - 10 cm³ and 100 cm³
- Piece of paper
- Permanent marker
- Stopwatch or timer
- Safety glasses
- Labcoat
- Lab gloves

Background:

Sodium thiosulfate solution reacts with dilute hydrochloric acid like

this:
Na2S2O3 (aq) + 2HCl (aq) → 2NaCl (aq) + SO2 (g)

The sulfur forms as fine particles, which make the solution cloudy.
After a time, it becomes so cloudy that you cannot see through it.
The time taken for this to happen is a measure of the reaction rate.
fi
Procedure:

1) Measure 50 cm³ of sodium thiosulfate solution into the conical flask.

Place the flask over the cross.
2) Measure 5 cm³ of hydrochloric acid into the 10 cm³ measuring
cylinder.
3) Add the acid to the sodium thiosulfate. Start the timer immediately.
4) Swirl the flask to mix the reactants. Do not breathe in the sulfur
dioxide that forms.
5) Look down through the solution, and stop the clock the moment you
can no longer see the cross.
6) Record the time it took (in seconds).
7) Repeat for runs 2 in your table. Each time you will add water to the
sodium thiosulfate solution in the flask. Use the volumes given in the
table.

Safety Precautions :

Hydrochloric acid solution is corrosive to the eyes and skin. It

is moderately toxic by ingestion and inhalation. Sodium
thiosulfate solution is a body tissue irritant. The reaction of
sodium thiosulfate and hydrochloric acid generates sulfur
dioxide gas, which is a skin and eye irritant. Perform this demonstration
in a well-ventilated lab only. Avoid contact of all chemicals with eyes and
skin. Wear chemical splash goggles, temperature-resistant gloves, and
chemical-resistant apron.

Data:

We repeated the experiment twice, in order to collect more precise data. The
average of both is presented in the table below.
Experiment Volume of sodium Volume of water / Volume of HCl / Time taken /
thiosulfate cm³ cm³ s

Experiment variables:
The control variable is the time taken - T / s
The independent variable is the volume of Na2S2O3 used - V/cm³

Analysis: This graph represents the relationship between the rate of the
reaction and the concentration of one of the reactants while keeping the
concentrations of other reactants constant. The steeper the line is, the faster
the reaction proceeds.
Explanation:
As the concentration of the sodium thiosulfate solution decreases the
number of particles that are available to react with hydrochloric acid also
Decreases. This implies that the reaction rate slows down, so the time
taken for the reaction to complete increases.

In conclusion, the rate of reaction between sodium thiosulfate and

hydrochloric acid was investigated in this experiment. The more effective
collisions take place, the quicker the rate of the reaction will be. Thus we can
conclude in our hypothesis that increasing the concentration of a substance
will increase the rate of the reaction.
