VOLUME

Volume of prisms

A prism is a solid that has two faces that are parallel and congruent.

Volume of a prism = Area of cross-section x Length

EXERCISE 1 (Take π = 3.14 and approximate answers to 1 decimal place unless

otherwise stated)

(1) Calculate the volume of the following solids

(a) (b)

22 cm
15 mm
5 cm

10 mm
20 mm

(2) An open rectangular water tank is 60 cm long, 30 cm wide and 20 cm high.

Calculate the volume of water in it when it is three quarters full.

(3) A swimming pool is 50 m long and 20 m wide. The depth varies uniformly from 1 m at
the shallow end to 2.5 m at the deep end.

Calculate the volume of water in the pool when it is full.

22
(4) Find the volume of a right circular cylinder of radius 14 cm, height 20 cm. (take π = ).
7
(5) A pipe has a bore of 8 cm and an outside diameter of 10 cm. If it is 8 m long, find the
volume of metal in the pipe in cubic centimetres.

(6) A tent has a triangular cross section whose base is 4 m and whose altitude is 2.5 m. If it
is 8 m long, what is the volume of the tent?

(7) The figure below shows the cross section of a block of wood. If the block is 1.75 m long,
calculate its volume. (Give your answer in cm3 correct to 3 significant figures.)

5cm

15 cm

(8) Find the weight of a metal right circular cylinder of radius 6 cm and height 14 cm if
1 cm3 of the metal weighs 4.7 g.

(9) The petrol tank of a car is a cuboid measuring 60 cm by 35 cm by 20 cm. How many
liters will it hold when full?

(10) 33 liters of water are poured into a rectangular tank 55 cm long and 48 cm wide.
Calculate the depth of the water.
Volume of a cone, sphere, and pyramid

1
Volume of a cone = πr2h
3

where r =radius of cone and h = height of cone

4
Volume of a sphere = πr3
3

where r =radius of sphere

1
Volume of a pyramid = x area of base x height

Exercise 2

(1) Find the volume of a cone whose base radius is 28 cm and whose height is 15 cm.

(2) A pyramid has a rectangular base 5 cm by 3. 5 cm and an altitude of 10 cm. Calculate its
volume.

(3) A sphere has a radius of 4.5m. Find its volume.

(4) A hemisphere has a diameter of 300 mm. Calculate its volume.

(5) A sphere has a volume of 100 cm3. Find its radius giving the answer to three significant
figures.

(6) Ten identical spheres, each of radius 5.7 cm, are melted down and recast into a single
cube. Calculate the length of the cube, giving your answer correct to three significant
figures.

(7) A pyramid has a square base of side 10 cm. Its volume is 400 cm3. Find the height.

(8) An iron ball has a diameter of 15 cm. The density of iron is 7.8 g/cm3. Calculate the mass
of the ball in kilograms correct to 3 significant figures.

(9) A wine glass has a conical shape. The diameter of the top is 7 cm, and the depth is 8 cm.
How many milliliters of wine can it hold?

(10) A boiler consists of a cylinder with a hemisphere at each end. The diameter of the boiler
is 200 cm, and its total length is 350 cm. calculate to the nearest liter, the capacity of the
boiler.
