Learning Episode 5
Preparing the Learning Environment:
An Overview

To have a meaningful and successful accomplishment in this FS episode,

be sure to read through the whole episode before participating and
assisting in your FS 2 Resource Teacher’s class. Note all the information
you will need and tasks you will need to do before working on this episode.
Target Your Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of this Learning Episode, I must be able to revisit the concept of
learning environment in the context of the current teaching and learning
situation.

Clarify Your Task

Overview of the Learning Environment
A learning environment, traditionally called the classroom, is a space in a
school that supports student learning. It is a self-contained area where
teacher teaches and children learn. In the classroom are chairs or tables
for students and a front table for the teacher. This a traditional face-to-face
classroom. Most often the students should face the teacher as the chairs
are arranged that way. But as teaching deliveries changed to enhance
learning, modification in the seating arrangement evolved and more
opportunity for the learners to move about for cooperative learning was
addressed.
A conducive learning environment should have the following
characteristics:

 Flexibility – There is opportunity to have small groups, movable

walls.
 Openness – Learning corners/areas which could be shared.
 Access to resources – Audio-visual materials are ready and open
for use.
 Physical classroom – Space is clean and safe.
 Psychological atmosphere – It is friendly and accommodating.
The classroom climate nurtures the intellectual, physical, social
and emotional development of the students.
Here are some specific strategies for developing the optimal
classroom climate. You may consider these.
1. Learning environment addresses both physical and
psychological needs of the students for security and order, love
and belonging, personal power and competence, freedom and
fun.
2. Create a sense of order. For example, teacher should teach
students how to.
 enter the classroom and become immediately engaged in
the activity;
 distribute and collect materials;
 find out about missed assignments due to absence and
how to make up for them;
 get the teacher's attention without disrupting the class
and
 arrange desks, tables quickly and quietly for various
purposes.
3. Greet learners as they enter your face-to-face or on-line
classroom.
4. In a healthy and conducive learning environment, everybody
belongs and knows each other.
5. Encourage class building activities like games and team
activities.
6. In a conducive learning environment, success whether small or
big is recognized and celebrated.
Both approaches, either the traditional face-to-face or online, lead
to positive results but in different ways, so usually in practice both
approaches are combined.

Learning environment can be traditional (F2F), virtual (on-line) or a

combination (Hybrid).

Participate and Assist

What will you do to assist your mentor in setting up a conducive learning
environment in the following conditions:
1. Bulletin Board Display, I would maintain the cleanliness of the board
and write down the latest announcements or the upcoming school
activities.
2. Small Group Discussion, help to facilitate and correct any students’
small mistakes if possible.
3. Checking class attendance in a virtual classroom (i.e. google meet or
zoom), create my own attendance checklist to provide support and avoid
faulty attendance checking with my CT, because if both of us have copy
we can ensure that the attendance is double checked.

Notice
Learning Environment 1:

 What have you noticed of the display in the class bulletin board?
What message or theme does it convey? What makes it attractive
to the learners?
- There are no bulletin boards in classrooms that we’d observe.

 Does it help in the learning process? How? I can’t answer this

question due to bulletin boards do not exist in any classroom at
school.

Learning Environment 2:

 If the teacher is using a distance delivery of learning through the

modules, where is most likely the learning space of the students?
- Particularly at their home, just like what our CT did at his
students in G9. He only give modules to be answered at their
home because they use their time at practicing their dance
performance for PE subject.
 Can you describe? How can you as a teacher help to make such
environment conducive for learning?
- On my own insight I can contribute to make a conducive
learning environment for student through eliminating
hazardous materials, facilitating them to maintain the
cleanliness and instructing them to avoid playing inside
classroom.
Analyze
The examples above, describe two contrasting situations. The first
shows that the learners are in the same room or space while in the
second, the learners maybe in different learning spaces like homes, study
hubs or in extreme cases parks or under the trees.
As a teacher, in which of the two situations would you prefer to
manage for learning? Choose between Learning Environment 1 or
Learning Environment 2.
Explain your choice: Why?
I would rather choose a face-to-face learning environment than
online enable for me to manage it well and assist the students to engage
in learning seriously. It would be better for both of us in ftf learning so that I
can guide them not only in taking part for cognitive learning but also in
injecting them the good habits/ethical behavior to mold them to be a good
and fully educated at any circumstances.
Reflect
Based on my noticing and analysis. I realized that
a. Face-to-face learning is more advantageous than online learning
because you can observe and create strong relationship through real-time
interaction.
b. Face-to- face learning is more effective to teach than online.
c. For some instance online learning does have advantage to such
us time cost, transportation savings and safetiness of students during
travelling back and forth in the school-home.

OBSERVE
What probable problem may result from the two situations of the learning
environment?
- Online and face-to-face learning environments present unique
challenges, such as limited social interaction, lack of immediate feedback,
technological issues, and high self-discipline demands. Face-to-face
learning faces fixed schedules, resource ⁿlimitations, distractions, and
health risks due to proximity. Balancing these environments through
blended learning approaches can help mitigate these issues and provide a
more comprehensive educational experience.

REFLECT
What solutions can I think of to solve the problem?
-I think, as a future educator a teacher must employ strategies to
effectively manage both online and face-to-face learning environments.
Online learning can be enhanced through virtual discussions, collaborative
projects, and live video sessions, while face-to-face learning can be
accommodated by flexible scheduling, leveraging technology, and creating
a conducive learning environment. Health and safety measures can also
be implemented.
PLAN
How should I do it?
- As future educator I have plans to address challenges in both online
and face-to-face learning environments. I plan to enhance social
interaction through virtual discussion groups, provide technical support,
promote self-discipline, and use digital tools. I will also implement flexible
scheduling, hybrid models, and technology integration in the classroom. I
should create a conducive learning environment, minimizing distractions
and arranging the layout to support different learning styles. Moreover, I
will also implement to follow health guidelines and stay home when sick.

My Conducive Learning Environment”

By: Pegie Aremala Jr.

Establishing an environment that supports learning is essential for

promoting student involvement, drive, and achievement in academics. As
a hopeful teacher, my vision for a learning space includes physical and
psychological aspects that cater to various student needs and foster a
welcoming, lively atmosphere. In terms of physical space, my classroom
will be created to be cozy, inviting, and adaptable. The design will include
flexible desks and chairs to support different teaching styles and learning
tasks, including solo tasks, teamwork, and class discussions. I will make
sure the classroom has good lighting and ventilation, creating a
comfortable and healthy environment that is suitable for focusing and
studying. Having access to contemporary educational technology like
interactive whiteboards, tablets, and dependable internet is essential for
implementing creative teaching approaches and utilizing multimedia
materials. Additionally, the room will feature educational posters, student
projects, and motivational quotes to establish a motivating and engaging
atmosphere.

Additionally, creating a positive, inclusive, and supportive classroom

culture is essential from a psychological standpoint. I will set up precise,
steady guidelines and requirements that encourage respect, responsibility,
and teamwork. It is crucial to establish solid connections with students,
therefore, my main focus will be on getting to know each student
personally, recognizing their strengths, passions, and areas needing
improvement. By fostering trust and mutual respect, students will feel
appreciated and encouraged to engage in activities. Diversification is
crucial for catering to a variety of learning requirements. I will use a range
of teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning preferences,
including visual, auditory, and kinesthetic tasks. Integrating project-based
learning and real-world applications can enhance the relevance and
engagement of lessons. Consistent formative assessments will assist in
monitoring student development and offering prompt feedback, enabling
me to adapt teaching to enhance each student's learning experience. It is
essential to include aspects of social-emotional learning as well. I plan to
incorporate exercises that enhance emotional intelligence, like
mindfulness.
