Homework 1

The document contains 6 homework problems related to elasticity theory. Problem 1 asks to determine principal stresses given a stress tensor. Problem 2 asks to sketch Mohr's circles and find maximum shear stresses for given stress tensors. Problem 3 asks about principal stresses for a given tensor and to find the other two principal stresses. Problems 4-6 provide additional stress/strain/displacement relations and ask questions about stresses, strains, deformations and material properties.

CE 513 Theory of Elasticity

Spring 2020-2021 HW 1
Due Date: 19/03/2021 (till 5 p.m.)- LATE SUBMISSION IS NOT ACCEPTED.

Problem 1

At point P, the stress tensor is given as follows,

 
5 a -a
S =  a 0 b  MPa
-a b 0
where a and b are unspecified. At the same point, stress tensor can be expressed with
respect to another coordinate system as follows:
 
c 0 0
S = 0 2 0 MPa
0 0 d
If the magnitude of the maximum shear stress at P is 5.5 MPa, determine the principal
stresses σ1 , σ2 and σ3 .

Problem 2

Sketch the Mohr’s circles for the stress tensors given below and determine the maximum
shear stresses.

•  
σ0 0 σ0
S=0 σ0 0  MPa
σ0 0 σ0
•  
σ0 0 0
S=0 2 σ0 0  MPa
0 0 −σ0

Problem 3

The stress tensor at a point is given as below. Before you attempt to do any calculations
please look at the given stress tensor.
 
5 0 0
S = 0 −6 −12 MPa
0 −12 1
• It should be clear that one of the principal stresses is 5 MPa. Why ? Please
explain it briefly.
• Please find the other two principal stresses using 2D Mohr’s circle technique.

Problem 4 The displacement field and strain distribution in a member have the form

u = a0 x2 y 2 + a1 xy 2 + a2 x2 y
v = b0 x2 y + b1 xy
γxy = c0 x2 y + c1 xy + c2 x2 + c3 y 2

What relationships connecting the constants (a’s, b’s and c’s) make the foregoing ex-
pression possible?

Problem 5

An elastic material is compressed in a rigid cylinder as shown. Find the apparent

elastic modulus (that is σz /ǫz ) in terms of E and ν. Show that it is much larger than
E if the material has a Poisson’s ratio only slightly less than 0.5, e.g. rubber (almost
incompressible). Assume no friction between the material and rigid cap and cylinder
walls.

Problem 6

For the planar structure shown in the figure (Assume that this is a plane stress problem),
the displacement field is given as,

u 0.002 y + 0.001 x
=
v 0.004 x2

• Calculate ǫxx , ǫyy and ǫxy using strain-displacement relations.

• Considering E = 200000 MPa and ν = 0.25, calculate the stress components
developing at point x = 1.1, y = 0.4. (Here you need the plane stress elasticity
tensor given below).

• Draw the deformed shape of the domain (the rectangle) (by taking the lower left
corner as your origin).
• Are the stresses and strains homogeneous or non-homogeneous? Please comment
and explain why they are homogenous or non-homogenous.

For plane stress problems,

    

σyy  = E ν 1 0   ǫyy 
