CE 513 Theory of Elasticity

Spring 2020-2021 HW 2
Due Date: 05/04/2021 Monday till 5 p.m. - LATE SUBMISSION IS NOT
ACCEPTED.

Problem 1

At a point in an elastic body the principal strains ǫ3 , ǫ2 , ǫ1 are in the ratio 3:4:5; the
largest principal stress is σ1 = 140 MPa. Determine the ratio σ3 :σ2 :σ1 and the values
σ2 and σ3 . Take ν = 0.3 and E=200 GPa.

Problem 2

A simply supported beam carries a concentrated force P and a moment M0 as shown

in the figure below. How much strain energy is stored in the beam owing to the loads
acting simultaneously?

Problem 3

A circular shaft of 120-mm diameter is subjected to end loads P=45 kN, M=4 kN.m
and T=11.2 kN.m. Let σyp = 280 MPa. What is the factor of safety, assuming failure
to occur in accordance with the octahedral shear stress theory?

Problem 4

The state of stress at a point is described by,

 
63.4 0 0
σ= 0 0.53 0  MPa
0 0 −12.2
Using σyp = 90 MPa, ν = 0.3 and a factor of safety of 1.2, determine whether failure
occurs at the point for
• the maximum shearing stress theory

• the maximum distortion energy theory

Problem 5

The state of stress at a point in a cast-iron structure (σu = 290MPa, σu = 650MPa)
is described by σx = 0, σy = −180 MPa, σxy = 200 MPa. Determine whether failure
occurs at the point according to
• the maximum principal stress criterion
• the Coulomb-Mohr criterion

Problem 6

A plate, t meters thick, is fabricated of a material having ultimate strengths in tension

and compression σu and σu Pa, respectively. Calculate the force P required to punch a
hole of d meters in diameter through the plate as shown below. Employ
• the maximum principal stress theory
• the Mohr-Coulomb theory
Assume that the shear force is uniformly distributed through the thickness of the plate.

Problem 7

The yield criteria proposed by Deshpande and Fleck is extensively used for metallic
foams. It has the following form,
φ = σ̂ − σY < 0
where σ̂ is defined as,
1
σ̂ 2 =

σ + α2 σm

[1 + (α/3)2 ] e
q P
σe is the von Mises effective stress σe = 32 3i=1 3j=1 σij σij , σm is the mean stress
P ′ ′

σm = 13 (σxx + σyy + σzz ) and the parameter α controls the shape of the yield surface.

As usual σij are the components of the deviatoric part of the stress tensor defined as

σ = σ − σm I.
• Plot the yield surface in principal stress space for α = 0.0, 0.25, 0.5. Please realize
that this yield surface reduces to von Mises yield surface for α = 0.0.

Hint: You can make use of the file that I uploaded on Teams page. That was for von
Mises yield criteria. You need to introduce a few modifications.
