    We will now learn the beloved ‫ عل ََم‬Family. Pay close attention to the ‫ي‬
    َ ‫رصفَص ِغ‬:

    َ‫معلم‬ َ‫فه َو‬ ‫تعلِيما‬ َ‫يعل ُم‬ َ‫عل َم‬
    A teacher So he is To teach He teaches. He taught.
    َّ َ ُ َُ ًْ َْ َّ َ ُ ِّ ُ
    َ‫معلم‬ ‫فه ََو‬ ‫تعلِيما‬ ‫يعل َُم‬ َ‫عل َم‬
    The one who is taught So he is To teach He is being taught. He was taught.

    َّ َ ُ ُ ْ ُ َّ ِّ َ ُ َ ُ ْ َ ُ ْ َّ َ ِّ َ ُ ْ ْ َ ْ َ
    َ‫َوالظ ْرفَمِنهَمعلم‬ َ‫ْهَعنهََلَتعل ْم‬ ‫وانل‬ َ‫اْلم ُرَمِنهَعل ْم‬
    Time/place of Don’t teach! Teach!

    Notice that the most notable characteristic of the ‫ عل ََم‬Family is the ّ on the middle letter such

    as in ‫عل ََم‬, ‫ن َّز َل‬, ‫ف‬
    َ ‫َش‬, ‫كر َم‬, etc. (Recall that the most notable characteristic of the ‫ أسل ََم‬was the ‫ َأ‬in
    َ ََْ ََ ْ َ ََ ْ َ
    the beginning such as in ‫ق‬ َ ‫ََأنف‬,‫َب‬ ‫ََأخ‬,‫َأسلم‬, etc.

    َ َّ َ ِّ َ ُ
    Additionally, know that if a َ‫ فعلَماض‬sounds like ‫عل ََم‬, then its present tense will sound like ‫يعل َُم‬
    ْ َ
    and all the other words in the ‫ي‬ َ ‫( رصفَص ِغ‬sarf sagheer) will follow this family’s pattern. The َ‫اسم‬
    َ َّ َ َ ُ ُ
    ‫ فاعِل‬of the ‫ عل ََم‬Family is simply the ‫ارع‬ َُ at the beginning and a
    ِ ‫ فعلَمض‬with a ‫ َم‬instead of ‫ي‬
    َ ِّ َ ُ ُ َْ
    tanween at the end. Hence, the ‫ اسمَفاعِل‬is َ‫مع َلم‬. You may have already guessed that the ‫اسمَمفع ْول‬
    َّ َ ُ َ ُ َْ
    is َ‫( معلم‬notice the ‫ ظ ْرف‬is the same as the ‫)!اسمَمفع ْول‬.

    The command and forbidding forms are constructed the way any ‫’فعل‬s commanding and

    forbidding forms are constructed. For the ‫( فعلَأمر‬commanding ‫)فعل‬, the ‫ارع‬

    person must be made lightest and have the ‫ ت‬removed (َ‫ تعل ُم‬becomes ‫)ع َل َْم‬. For the ‫فعلَنْه‬

    (forbidding ‫)فعل‬, the ‫ فعلَمضارِع‬in the 2nd person must be made lightest and be given a ‫َل‬ َ (َ‫تعل ُم‬

    becomes ‫)َلَتعل َْم‬.
