Plan a survey
Survey goal: what you want to find out is the survey goal. Survey goal should be in one
or two sentences.
Survey goal in this unit:
Find out the busiest and noisiest areas of our school at different times of the day.
Find out what people feel about the space and noise at these times.
Plan a survey
Choosing the data to collect: There are two types of data:-
Quantitative Data: is numerical. It is used to measure and compare. In the example,
the quantitative data is numbers, people, and noise levels.

Qualitative Data: is descriptive. In the example, qualitative data will describe how
classmates feel about the noise levels in the school.
Plan a survey
Choosing a survey method: The way you collect the data is called survey method.

Survey methods include:

• Questionnaires – can be paper or online – used to collect both qualitative and quantitative data
• Interviews – used for qualitative data
• Measuring devices (digital and analogue) – used to collect quantitative data
Plan a survey
Choosing technology for a survey: The devices to collect data will come under technology.
The devices used to record data
The devices to count the data.

Activity 1:-
ACTIVITY SOLUTION
Survey goal: Find busiest and noisiest areas in school at different times.
Find out feelings of people about nois elevels there
location: Corridor
Time: Assembly/OFF time
Data: Quantitative data:- number of people, sound levels (in dB)
Qualitative data:- description of noise(chatter, footsteps, equipment sound), identify specific
source contributing to that noise
Technology: automated counters, sound level meters, timer/stop watch,
voice recorder app
Prepare for a survey:
to prepare for a survey, we need to form
teams, and agree each roles/duties.
Record data for analysis:
Quantitative data: Two quantitative data items are used:
• Number of people
• Sound/Noise levels
Sample time should be 1-2 minutes in this survey.
Record data for analysis:
Quantitative data: Map the following data in excel sheets
• Number of people Noise level recorded
• Sound/Noise levels Time Place Number of people
Minimum Maximum Average
Record data for analysis:
Qualitative data: This is the recorded answers to a survey question.
• Use voice recorder app to record every response while interviewing.
• Write down questions before you ask. For example, How do you feel about the noise level in this
location?
• This is called ‘open question’ . Means answer is based on how people feel, rather than ‘yes’ or ‘no’.
ACTIVITY 2: INTERVIEW QUESTIONS
Step 1: Make teams of 4 girls/boys 1. How do you feel about the noise
Step 2: Write location & Timing for your survey
levels in this location?
2. What is that particular event
Step 3: Describe role for:
happening when noise levels are too
1st member : will use counter app to count number of people. high in corridors?
2nd member : use sound meter app to record sound/noise levels 3. How does the busyness or noise in
3rd member: keep the stopwatch/timer control certain areas impact your overall
4th member: write interview questions on paper experience in the school?
ACTIVITY 3:
1st member : will use counter app to count number of people. Counter app/Counter device
2nd member : use sound meter app to record sound/noise levels. Decibel X smartphone app
3rd member: keep the stopwatch/timer control: Stopwatch/Timer app in smartphone
4th member: write interview questions on paper
Present your data so you can analyse it:
First step: copy your data into a format that helps you analyse it.
Transferring quantitative data:
Transfer data into spreadsheets.
For example: we use charts for that in spreadsheets
Present your data so you can analyse it:
First step: copy your data into a format that helps you analyse it.
Transcribing qualitative data:
Transcribing: Copying qualitative data after a survey us called transcribing.
Requirement of Transcribing data: Data accuracy. It must tells the truth.
Step to transcribe data:
1. Listen to your voice recordings. Write out interview answers.
2. Add the place where recording was made.
3. Add the time at which recording of question was done.
Present your data so you can analyse it:
First step: copy your data into a format that helps you analyse it.
Transcribing qualitative data:
Analysing your data:
Use spreadsheets quantitative data to answer:
When is our school busiest?
When is our school noisy?
Is our school always noisier when it is busy?
Use transcribe interviews to answer:
Are people more happy or less happy when it is noisy and busy?
