The minimum system requirements to run LinkOne WinView are:
 A personal computer running:

Overview
LinkOne WinView has been engineered from the ground up using Microsoft .NET technology to
provide a sustainable framework for future development. This new framework provides a powerful
graphical solution for content management and distribution that developers can customize to meet
changing business needs.
With the new .NET development libraries, you can synchronize data between LinkOne and existing
systems. This lets you provide real-time data that is relevant to the LinkOne part a user is currently
viewing. You can even integrate LinkOne WinView with your existing applications.
Learning More About LinkOne WinView
The WinView 5.11 User Guide provides in-depth information about all aspects of LinkOne WinView.
To display the User Guide in LinkOne WinView, press F1 or select Help » LinkOne Help.

Installation
This section describes how to install LinkOne WinView.

Side-By-Side Installations
You can install LinkOne WinView Version 5 on a system that has installations of previous versions of
LinkOne WinView. However, you must install each version into a different folder. This prevents one
version from overwriting files that belong to another version.

Installing LinkOne WinView

Use the LinkOne WinView installer (*.exe) file to install LinkOne WinView on your system. You can
download the installer from the Mincom LinkOne Website (http://www.mincom.com/linkone).
Before You Begin
LinkOne WinView requires the Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0. Make sure .NET 2.0 is installed
on your system before installing LinkOne WinView. You can download .NET 2.0 from the Microsoft
web site
(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856eacb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15
c5e04f5).
In addition, the redlining feature requires Microsoft .NET Framework version 3.0. If you want to use
redlining, install .NET 3.0 before installing LinkOne WinView. You can download .NET 3.0 from the
Microsoft web site

Step One
Double-click the LinkOne WinView installer (*.exe) file to launch the installation wizard. The wizard
examines your system details.

If your system meets all necessary requirements, the installation wizard displays the welcome window.
Click Next to begin installing LinkOne WinView.

Step Two
You must accept the software license agreement before you can install LinkOne WinView. Select the
option to accept the license agreement, and then click Next.

Step Three
If the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 is not installed on your system, the installation wizard displays
the .NET Framework Requirement window. You can still install and run LinkOne WinView, but you
won't be able to use the redlining feature.

Click Next to continue. If you do not see this message, skip to the next step.

Step Four
Enter the user name and organization for the primary user of LinkOne WinView. Then select an
installation option.
 Anyone who uses this computer: Any user who logs on to the computer can run LinkOne
WinView from the Start menu.
 Only for me: Only you can run LinkOne WinView from the Start menu.
After you select an option, click Next to continue.

Step Five
Select a setup type.

 Typical: The installation wizard installs the most commonly used program features in the
Program Files folder.
 Custom: You can choose which program features to install and where to install them.
After you select an option, click Next to continue.

(Optional) Step Six
If you selected the Custom setup type option, the installation wizard displays the Custom Setup
window. Select the program features to install.
 Technical Reference Material: Installs sample application code and the Technical Reference
Guide.
 COM Control: Installs a backward compatible interface for legacy LinkOne WinView functionality.
 DBMan: Installs the Configuration Manager, which replaces the DBMan functionality of previous
versions.
 Ellipse Integration: Installs the components required to integrate LinkOne with Mincom Ellipse.

To change the location where the files are installed, click Change. When you are ready, click Next to
continue.

Step Seven
Click Install to install LinkOne with the options you selected. After the installation is complete, click
Finish to close the installation wizard.

Getting Started With LinkOne WinView

This section provides an overview of LinkOne WinView and shows you how to quickly get up and
running.

Use one of the following methods to display the User Guide:
 In LinkOne WinView, press F1 or select Help » LinkOne Help.
 On the Windows Start menu, click All Programs » Mincom LinkOne WinView » WinView User
Guide.

LinkOne and Windows UAC

Since the release of Windows Vista, Windows includes User Access Control (UAC), which prevents
unauthorized applications from accessing secured resources such as program files and the registry.
By default, UAC is enabled. In this state, if an application does require access to a secured resource,
it must be launched with administration privileges, otherwise the application will fail and may report an
error. UAC can be disabled, allowing applications to run without security checks, however this is not
recommended.
During typical operations with UAC enabled, LinkOne will operate without the need for UAC
permissions, and can therefore be launched from the start menu in the standard way. However, in
some specific instances, such as when setting licenses, LinkOne needs to be run with administration
privileges.
On Windows 7, you can start LinkOne applications with administration privileges by locating the menu
item in the Start menu, and then Shift-Right-Click on it to display the context menu. On the context
menu select "Run as Administrator"

Running LinkOne for the First Time

To start LinkOne WinView from the Windows Start menu, click All Programs » Mincom LinkOne
WinView » WinView.
If you previously used another version of LinkOne WinView, a dialog box asks you if you want to
migrate settings from the previous version.
 To migrate settings, select a previous version, and then click OK. This lets you start using
LinkOne WinView right away using your previous settings.
 To run LinkOne WinView using the default settings. Select Don't migrate settings, and then click
OK. LinkOne WinView will not ask you again if you want to migrate settings.
 If you click Cancel, LinkOne WinView does not migrate settings. However, you are asked if you
want to migrate settings the next time you start LinkOne WinView.

Configuring LinkOne WinView

Use the Configuration dialog box to customize the appearance and behavior of LinkOne WinView.
You can enter licensing information, and you can specify where LinkOne WinView stores information
and looks for books.
System administrators can use the Configuration dialog box to lock configuration settings and then
deploy these settings to a network of LinkOne WinView users.
To access the Configuration dialog box, select Tools » Configuration.

To change settings on the Configuration dialog box, select an item in the tree, and then make
changes to the item properties in the configuration pane. When you are done changing settings, click
OK to save the changes.

Locking Down Configuration
If you are a LinkOne administrator, you can make changes that apply to all users of LinkOne WinView.
To make changes as an administrator, right-click the text label next to any item in the configuration
pane, and then select Administrator Setting. This locks down the configuration and prevents users
who are not administrators from changing that item.

Working With Licenses

LinkOne WinView requires a valid license to display LinkOne content. To obtain a license, contact
LinkOne support.
Use the Licenses configuration pane to work with licenses. To display the Licenses configuration
pane, select Licenses on the Configuration dialog box.

You also use the Licenses configuration pane to work with

security keys. Some LinkOne books require security keys to
display content.

Adding a License
To add a license or security key, click the Add License button on the toolbar on the License
configuration pane. LinkOne WinView displays the Add License dialog box.
If you have a LinkOne license (*.linkonelicense) file, click From File. Select the LinkOne license file,
and then click Open.
Alternately, you can copy the contents of the license file to the clipboard. Then click Paste on the Add
License dialog box to paste the license code.
When you are done, click OK. The new license appears in the list.

Editing or Deleting a License

To edit a license or security key, select it in the list, and then click the Edit License button. LinkOne
WinView displays the Edit License dialog box. Change the license as needed, and then click OK.
To delete a license or security key, select it in the list, and then click the Remove License button.
Click Yes to remove the license from the list.

License Types
LinkOne WinView uses three types of licenses. Depending on the type of license you add, you can
access different content and features in LinkOne WinView.
The table below describes the license types.

License Type Description

Open Viewer LinkOne WinView can read books from any

LinkOne publisher.

Publisher-Linked Viewer LinkOne WinView can read books only

from a single LinkOne publisher.

Media-Linked Viewer LinkOne WinView can read books only

from a single publisher supplied CD-ROM.

Security Keys
Security keys let you view content that has been locked by a LinkOne publisher. When LinkOne
WinView accesses locked content, it uses the appropriate security keys in your license collection to
unlock the content.
If the appropriate security keys are not available, LinkOne WinView cannot display the content.
Contact the publisher of the book to request the correct security key.

Adding Local Libraries

A local library stores LinkOne books on a local drive or on a shared network drive that the local
computer can access. Local libraries are the most common type of library in LinkOne WinView.
After you add a local library, you can configure it to be an indexed library. Indexing a library improves
the speed of searches. However, an indexed library must be prepared after you add new books to it.
Adding a Local Library
1. Select Tools » Configuration to display the Configuration dialog box.
2. Click Libraries in the tree to display the Libraries configuration pane.
3. Click the Add Library button.
4. Browse for and select the folder where the LinkOne library is located, and then click OK.
The library appears under All Libraries in the list.
5. Click OK to save your changes.
Working With a Local Library
After you add a library, you can work with it in the following ways:
 Expand the library to see the publishers and books that are available in library.
 To remove a library, select the library and click the Remove Selected button.
 To disable a library, select the library and click the Disable or Enable Library button.

 To make a library indexed, select the library and click the Show or Hide Details button. Then
select Indexed Library under Library Type.

Adding Remote Libraries

A remote library hosts LinkOne books on an Internet web server so that you can access content from
a remote location. When you access remote content, LinkOne WinView makes a local copy of the
content on your computer for quick access. If the hosted content is updated, LinkOne WinView
downloads the new content the next time you access the remote library.
You can configure a remote library as an updated library.
 Remote library: All books in the library appear as local books on your computer.
 Updated library: Only books installed from the library appear as local books on your computer.
For both remote and updated libraries, you can specify an update interval that specifies how often
LinkOne WinView checks the library for updated content.
Adding a Remote or Updated Library
1. Select Tools » Configuration to display the Configuration dialog box.
2. Click Libraries in the tree to display the Libraries configuration pane.
3. Click the Add Library button.
4. Browse for and select the local folder where LinkOne WinView will store a copy of the remote
content, and then click OK.
The library appears under All Libraries in the list.
5. Select the library and click the Show or Hide Details button.
6. Under Library Type, select Remote Library or Updated Library.
7. In the URL box, enter the Internet address of the remote library.
8. Under Update Settings, specify how often LinkOne WinView checks for updated content.
9. Click OK to save your changes.
Working With a Remote or Updated Library
After you add a library, you can work with it in the following ways:
 To remove a library, select the library and click the Remove Selected button.
 To disable a library, select the library and click the Disable or Enable Library button.

Install Books Wizard

Use the Install Books Wizard to copy books from a remote location or from removable media to your
local library. For example, you can copy LinkOne content from a CD-ROM to your local library. After
you install the content, you no longer need the CD-ROM to access it.

You can install a book in an updated library only if the library is

updated using the same URL as the source library. You cannot
install books in a remote library.

Using the Install Books Wizard

1. On the Libraries configuration pane, right-click the local library where you want to install the book,
and then click Install Books.
LinkOne WinView displays the Install Books Wizard.
2. Click Next to start the wizard.
3. Select the source library (the library that contains the book you want to install), and then click
Next.

 File based library: Click the ellipsis button, and then browse for the library folder.
 Internet based library: Enter the URL of the remote library.
4. Select the check box next to the books you want to install, and then click Next.
If you select a publisher, the wizard installs all books from that publisher.
5. (Optional) If you are installing books from an Internet based library to an updated library, select the
installation type, and then click Next.
 Full download: The wizard installs the entire book. This takes more time, but LinkOne
WinView displays the book more quickly the first time you open it.
 Minimum download: The wizard installs only the required files. This takes less time, but
LinkOne WinView displays the book more slowly the first time you open it because LinkOne
WinView must download the content from the remote URL.
6. After the wizard is done installing books, click Finish to complete the wizard.

Opening a LinkOne Book

After you add a local library, you are ready to open a book. Use the Select Book dialog box to open a
book.
To display the Select Book dialog box, select File » Open Book » Browse. You can also click the
Browse button on the Navigation toolbar.

The Select Book Dialog Box
The Select Book dialog box lists all publishers and books from the libraries that you added on the
Configuration dialog box.
 To preview the first page of a book, select the book in the tree, and the click the Preview button
on the toolbar.
 To open a book, select it in the tree and click Open, or double-click it.
 You can open a book using a bookmark on the Bookmarks tab.

 You can open a book you have recently viewed on the History tab.

Navigating a LinkOne Book

The Table of Contents control lists all pages in the currently open book. The Table of Contents
control can list pages in page order or true hierarchy order. When you click a page, LinkOne WinView
displays the page content.

Other Ways to Navigate
You can use the Next Page and Previous Page buttons on the Navigation toolbar to move between
pages in a book. To open the parent page of the current page, click the Parent Page button on the
Navigation toolbar.

You can also double-click a linked part in the parts list. This opens the linked location.

The LinkOne WinView User Interface

The LinkOne WinView user interface includes controls that let you view and work with information in
LinkOne books. The main controls are the Table of Contents, Pictures, Parts List, Related Parts
List, and Selection List controls.
The LinkOne WinView user interface also includes toolbars that let you quickly access common tasks
and features. The main toolbars are the Navigation, Navigation 2, Pictures, Notes, and Search
toolbars.
You can customize all controls and toolbars for the way you work, so you can find the right information
as quickly as possible.

Toolbars
The LinkOne WinView toolbars provide quick access to the features you use most. A toolbar can
contain any number of buttons, and the same button can exist on more than one toolbar.
A toolbar can be either floating or docked.
 To float a toolbar, drag it by its selection handle and move it away from the edge of the application
window.

The selection handle looks like four dots on the edge of the toolbar.
 To dock a toolbar, drag it by its title bar to the edge of the application window where you want to
dock it.
You can also dock a toolbar by double-clicking its title bar.
To move a button between toolbars, hold down ALT and drag the button to another toolbar (or to a
menu). To remove a button, hold down ALT and drag the button away from the toolbar.
Use the Customize dialog box to add or remove buttons on a toolbar. To display the Customize
dialog box, right-click a toolbar and select Customize.

LinkOne Controls
A control can either be floating or docked. A floating control is contained in a separate window that you
can drag anywhere on the screen. A docked control is attached to the edge of the LinkOne WinView
application window, or to the edge of another docked control. To resize a docked control, click and
drag the resize handle on the edge of the control.
Docking a Control
1. Left-click the title bar of the control you want to dock.
2. While holding down the mouse button, drag the control by its title bar.
Docking hints appear as you drag.
3. Move the cursor over a docking hint.
A shaded area shows you where the control will be docked if you use that docking hint. Use the
center docking hint to create a group of tabbed controls.
4. Release the mouse button.
If the cursor is not over a docking hint when you release the mouse button, the control becomes a
floating control.

To quickly change a control from docked to floating, double-click

the title bar. Double-click the title bar again to change the control
from floating to docked.

Automatically Hiding a Control
LinkOne WinView can automatically hide a control when you are not using it. When a control is
hidden, only its tab is visible. To display a control that it is hidden, move the cursor over its tab.
To set a control to automatically hide, click the Auto Hide button on the title bar of a docked control.
The Auto Hide button is to the left of the Close button and looks like a pin.

The Table of Contents Control

The Table of Contents control lists all pages in the currently open book. When you click a page,
LinkOne WinView displays the page content. To open or close the Table of Contents control, select
View » Table of Contents.
Each entry in the table of contents includes the page title, the page number, and the page reference. If
a page contains child pages, an expansion icon appears next to the entry. Click the expansion icon to
display the child pages.

Use the Table of Contents control toolbar to work with the table of contents and choose how it
appears. To show or hide the toolbar, right-click anywhere inside the Table of Contents control, and
then click Toolbar.

The Pictures Control

The Pictures control displays pictures and callouts for the page currently selected in the table of
contents. To open or close the Pictures control, select View » Pictures.
Use the Pictures control toolbar to print, zoom, rotate, and navigate between pictures. You can also
display and edit notes associated with the picture. To show or hide the toolbar, right-click anywhere
inside the Pictures control, and then click Toolbar.

Zooming
You can zoom in to see part of a picture in more detail or zoom out to see more of a picture at once.
To zoom the picture, use one of the following methods:

 Click and drag across part of the picture to zoom in on that area (enlarge it).
 Click inside the Pictures control, and then scroll the mouse wheel. Scrolling up zooms in
(enlarges the picture) and scrolling down zooms out (shrinks the picture).
 Select a zoom factor in the Zoom Factor box on the Pictures toolbar.
Panning
If the entire picture does not fit inside the Pictures control at the currently selected zoom factor,
scrollbars appear on the right and bottom edges of the Pictures control. Click and drag a scrollbar to
pan across the picture and view another area.
You can also pan using the mouse. Place the cursor over the picture and hold down the right mouse
button. While holding down the right mouse button, move the mouse to pan across the picture and
view another area.
Navigating Between Pictures
If there is more than one picture on the page, the pictures are listed in the Pictures box on the
Pictures toolbar. A black dot in front of a picture indicates that the picture contains the currently
selected part.

The MiniMap
Use the MiniMap control to quickly pan across a picture when viewing a large picture or a picture that
is zoomed in using a high zoom factor. To open or close the MiniMap control, click the MiniMap
button on the Pictures control toolbar.

The green box in the minimap corresponds to the part of the picture displayed in the Pictures control.
To see another part of the picture in the Pictures control, use one of the following methods:
 Click on a point inside the minimap to center that view on that point.

 Drag the green box inside the minimap to pan to another part of the picture.

The Parts List Control

The Parts List control displays part lists and embedded documents for the currently selected page. To
open or close the Parts List control, select View » Parts List.
When you click a callout in the Pictures control, LinkOne WinView selects the corresponding entry in
the parts list. Similarly, when you select an entry in the parts list, LinkOne WinView highlights the
corresponding callout in the Pictures control.

Use the Parts List control toolbar to print the parts list. You can also create and view notes for list
entries. To show or hide the toolbar, right-click anywhere inside the Parts List control, and then click
Toolbar.

The Selection List Control

The Selection List control displays the part entries that you have selected for order. You can also
specify quantities, add comments, and create new part entries. To open or close the Selection List
control, select View » Selection List.
When you double-click a part in the Pictures or Parts List control, the part is added to the selection
list at the default quantity. When you are done adding parts, you can save the selection list to a file
and then use the information in another application.
Use the Selection List control toolbar to work with selection list entries. You can also print and save
the selection list. To show or hide the toolbar, right-click anywhere inside the Selection List control,
and then click Toolbar.

Selection List Field Mappings

Use the Selection List Field Mappings dialog box to customize the information that appears in the
Selection List control when a part is added to the selection list. For example, if you have created
custom fields in your parts list, you can specify that the values for these custom fields appear in the
selection list instead of the default values.

Each selection list field corresponds to a column heading in the Selection List control. The
information that appears in a column when a part is added to the selection list is determined by the
field mapping. The selection list draws information from the mapped field and displays it in the
corresponding column.
To access the Selection List Field Mappings dialog box, select Selections » Selection List Field
Mappings. The Current Field Mappings list displays the available selection list fields as well as the
field type and field name they are mapped to.
Use the toolbar on the Selection List Field Mappings dialog box to add, modify, and delete selection
list field mappings.

Adding a Selection List Field Mapping
This example describes how to change the comments column in the selection list to display the
alternative description entry field.
1. Select Selections » Selection List Field Mappings.
LinkOne WinView displays the Selection List Field Mappings dialog box.
2. Click Add Field Mapping on the toolbar.

3. Under To, select Comments in the Name box. This specifies the selection list column to map a
field to.
4. Under From, select Entry Field in the Type box, and then select Alternative in the Name box.
This specifies the field to map to the selection list column.
5. Select appropriate access and location modifiers for the field mapping
Access and location modifiers are discussed in detail in the LinkOne WinView User Guide.
6. Click OK.
When you add a part to the selection list that includes an alternative description, the alternative
description appears in the comments column.

Notes
Notes let you store and view multilingual information in a LinkOne book. Use the Notes dialog box to
create and manage notes. To display the Notes dialog box, select Notes » Notes.
The Notes dialog box displays all available notes on your system. When you select a note in the list,
information about the note appears in the details pane. This information changes depending on the
type of note.
The table below describes the types of notes available in LinkOne WinView.

Note Type Description

Text Note Stores text or HTML content. When the note is

activated, LinkOne WinView displays the content in
a note viewer.

Program Note Associates a file with a book, page, or part item.

When the note is activated, LinkOne WinView
opens the file.

Cross Reference Creates a link to a LinkOne book, page, picture, or

Note part item. When the note is activated, LinkOne
WinView opens the linked item.

Hyperlink Note Creates a link to a web site. When the note is

activated, LinkOne WinView opens the linked web
site.

Redline Note Adds markup to a picture. When the note is

activated, LinkOne WinView displays the markup.

Value Note Stores a value that can be accessed from an

external application or from within LinkOne. When
the note is activated, LinkOne WinView retrieves
the value.

Editing Notes
Use the toolbar on the Notes dialog box to manage and work with notes.
To create a note, click the Add Note button on the toolbar, and then select the type of note you want
to create. A new note of that type appears in the note list. Enter information about then note in the
details pane, and then click OK to create the note.
If the OK button is not available, it means there is incorrect or missing information for a note. An
attention icon appears next to any field that needs to be corrected. Enter valid information in the field
to correct the error, or click Cancel to discard changes.

The Notes Explorer

Use the Notes Explorer to manage all of your notes in one central location. The Notes Explorer lists
all notes that are available from your current location in a LinkOne book.

The Notes Explorer is useful if there are a large number of notes and you want to view a particular
note. You can also use the Notes Explorer to delete notes that are no longer needed. This can help
you maintain notes that are shared by a large number of users.

Parts List Notes

You can quickly create a note that is associated with an item in the parts list. To add a note to an item
in the parts list, right-click the item, and then select the type of note to create from the context menu.
When you associate a note with an item in the parts list, a note icon appears next to the item. If you
hold the cursor over the icon, LinkOne WinView displays a tooltip with the note contents.
If you right-click an item in the parts list, the context menu displays all notes associated with the entry.
Click a note in the context menu to activate the note. (You can also activate a note by double-clicking
the note icon next to the entry.) When you activate a note, LinkOne WinView performs the default
action for the note. For example, it displays a text note.

Bookmarks
You can save your current location as a bookmark. Bookmarks are links that refer to a specific page or
item in a LinkOne book. When you follow a bookmark, LinkOne WinView opens the linked page or
item.

Use the Bookmarks dialog box to manage all of the bookmarks available on your system. To display
the Bookmarks dialog box, select Bookmarks » Bookmarks. When you select a bookmark in the list,
information about the bookmark appears in the details pane.

Editing Bookmarks
Use the toolbar on the Bookmarks dialog box to manage and work with bookmarks.
To create a bookmark, click the Add Bookmark button on the toolbar. A new bookmark appears in the
bookmark list. Enter information about then bookmark in the details pane, and then click OK to create
the bookmark.
There are two methods for creating a bookmark:
 Direct: The bookmark points to a book, page, picture, or parts list entry.
 Via Bookmark: The bookmark points to an existing bookmark. This method is useful if you want
to use an existing bookmark but also want to change the location or access modifiers, or the
language it is defined in.

Searching
Use the Search dialog box to search for information in LinkOne books. To access a search, select it
on the Search menu. You can also select Search » Other Searches, and then select a search in the
list.

To perform a search, you enter search criteria and specify search options. The information you enter is
different depending on the type of search you choose.
Select a scope for the search in the Search Scope Box. You can select the current book, the current
category (and its subcategories), or the current publisher.
To search in multiple books at once, select Multiple Books in the Search Scope box, and then click
Books. Select the books you want to search on the Select Books dialog box, and then click OK.

Click Search to begin the search. When the search is finished, the Search dialog box displays
matching page titles, books (if searching multiple books), and other matching information. Select a

page to see all matches found on that page. If you select a page, book, or other match and then click
Go To, LinkOne WinView opens the selected item.

Filtering
With filters, you can hide information that is not relevant to your equipment or location. This reduces
the amount of information LinkOne WinView displays and helps you focus on what is most important to
you.
You can apply a temporary filter any time you want to filter information. In addition, publishers can
include permanent filters in a book.

Temporary Filters
Use a temporary filter to filter information in the book you are currently viewing. If you open another
book or exit LinkOne WinView, all temporary filters are cleared.
To apply a temporary filter, select Filters » Temporary Filters to displays the Temporary Filters
dialog box. Select a filter in the list, and then specify a value for the filter.
Click OK to apply the filter. LinkOne WinView hides any parts whose filter does not match the value
you specified.

Permanent Filters
Permanent filters are always in effect. If you close a book or exit LinkOne WinView, the filter is applied
the next time you view content.
To apply a permanent filter, select Filters » Permanent Filters to display the Permanent Filters
dialog box. When you select a filter in the list, information about the filter appears in the details pane.

Use the toolbar on the Permanent Filters dialog box to add and remove filters. You can also use
access and location modifiers to specify who has access to a filter and where they can access it.

Printing
Use the Print dialog box to send content from LinkOne books to a printer. You can print a picture (or
just the zoomed area of a picture), a parts list, a page, or (if allowed by the publisher) an entire book.
To print LinkOne content, select File » Print to display the Print dialog box. In the Available content
box, select the type of content to print, and then click OK.
