What Is AI
is AI?
Introduction
AI stands for "artificial intelligence," and refers to the
ability of machines to perform tasks that typically
require human intelligence, such as recognising speech,
making decisions, or learning from experience.
Types of AI
AI is a branch of computer science that focuses on developing algorithms and systems that
can show intelligence. It comes in different types and subsets.
AI Application
AI is being used in various fields, such as healthcare (e.g. disease diagnosis, drug
discovery), transportation (e.g. vehicles that drive themselves, traffic management), finance
(e.g. fraud detection, investment advice), and entertainment (e.g. video game AI, movie
recommendations). AI is improving efficiency, accuracy, and safety in these industries, but
it also raises concerns about job displacement, bias, and privacy infringement.
Job displacement is another big issue. This refers to the potential loss of jobs and skills
due to automation and AI. Many people who currently do jobs with computers, such as
programmers, writers, and more, could find their jobs are replaced by AI.
Conclusion
AI has the potential to revolutionise many aspects
of society and improve people's lives, but it also
requires careful management and regulation to
ensure its benefits and mitigate its risks.
This resource has been made for the purpose of teaching English language learners. We know that students can be learning English in many different places, in many different ways and at age, so we try to
keep these resources as general as possible.
There are many acronyms associated with English language teaching. These include (but are not limited to) ELT, TEFL, EFL, ELL, EAL and ESOL. While the term ESL may not fully represent the linguistic
backgrounds of all students, it is the most widely recognised term for English language teaching globally. Therefore, we use the term ‘ESL’ in the names of our resources to make them easy to find but they are
suitable for any student learning to speak English.

Writing Questions
2. Imagine you are working in a field that is being impacted by AI. Describe the changes
you have seen and how they have affected your job.
3. Explain how AI bias could affect decision-making in different fields, such as healthcare
or finance.
4. Do you think AI will eventually become more intelligent than humans? Why or why
not?
Answers
Vocabulary Questions
"Narrow or weak AI" are AI systems that can perform specific tasks well but are not
capable of general intelligence. An example of this is digital voice assistants such as Siri.
3. What is "General or strong AI" and how does it differ from weak AI?
"General or strong AI" refers to AI systems that can perform any intellectual task
that a human can do. Such an AI could be equal to humans in intelligence.
"Job displacement" refers to the potential loss of jobs and skills due to automation
and AI.
Reading Questions
AI is used in various domains, including virtual assistants (e.g. Siri), self-driving cars,
fraud detection, and recommendation systems.
2. What is the difference between Narrow or weak AI and General or strong AI?
Narrow or weak AI can perform specific tasks well but it is not capable of general
intelligence, while General or strong AI can perform any intellectual task that a
human can do.
AlphaGo is an AI that can play a game called 'Go' and can learn independently by
playing itself. It was able to beat a very successful human player over five games in
2016, proving that its learning was genuine.
