What

is AI?
Introduction
AI stands for "artificial intelligence," and refers to the
ability of machines to perform tasks that typically
require human intelligence, such as recognising speech,
making decisions, or learning from experience.

AI is used in various domains, including virtual

assistants (e.g. Siri), self-driving cars, fraud detection,
and recommendation systems.

Types of AI
AI is a branch of computer science that focuses on developing algorithms and systems that
can show intelligence. It comes in different types and subsets.

Narrow or weak AI refers to General or strong AI Artificial

What is AI?

As an example of how AI can work, consider AlphaGo. AlphaGo

is an AI that can do one thing – play a game called ‘Go’. It
learns independently by playing itself – it is estimated that after
its first few months, it had played perhaps five million games
against itself, far more than any human could ever hope to play
(its successor, AlphaGo Zero, played 4.9 million games in three
days!). AlphaGo was able to beat a very successful human player
over five games in 2016, proving that its learning was genuine.

AI Application
AI is being used in various fields, such as healthcare (e.g. disease diagnosis, drug
discovery), transportation (e.g. vehicles that drive themselves, traffic management), finance
(e.g. fraud detection, investment advice), and entertainment (e.g. video game AI, movie
recommendations). AI is improving efficiency, accuracy, and safety in these industries, but
it also raises concerns about job displacement, bias, and privacy infringement.

Concerns and Limitations

There are concerns that AI may lead to more bias. AI bias refers to the tendency of AI
systems to replicate and amplify human biases and stereotypes. For example, the AI ChatGPT
relies on millions of texts but does not understand their meaning. Therefore, it will simply
repeat the information it has, and may not be able to check for biases.

Job displacement is another big issue. This refers to the potential loss of jobs and skills
due to automation and AI. Many people who currently do jobs with computers, such as
programmers, writers, and more, could find their jobs are replaced by AI.

Conclusion
AI has the potential to revolutionise many aspects
of society and improve people's lives, but it also
requires careful management and regulation to
ensure its benefits and mitigate its risks.

The development of AI should involve collaboration

and ethical considerations, as well as public
awareness and participation.

This resource has been made for the purpose of teaching English language learners. We know that students can be learning English in many different places, in many different ways and at age, so we try to
keep these resources as general as possible.
There are many acronyms associated with English language teaching. These include (but are not limited to) ELT, TEFL, EFL, ELL, EAL and ESOL. While the term ESL may not fully represent the linguistic
backgrounds of all students, it is the most widely recognised term for English language teaching globally. Therefore, we use the term ‘ESL’ in the names of our resources to make them easy to find but they are
suitable for any student learning to speak English.
