Instruction. Copy the problem and draw the necessary figure/diagram indicating all forces known and
unknown before solving the requirements. Indicate your final answer. Each required
question is equivalent to 5 points. No proper FBD, no solution, no points!

Problem 1. When the angular velocity of a 4ft diameter pulley is 3rad per second, the total acceleration
of a point on its rim is 30fps2.Determine the angular acceleration of the pulley at this instant.

Problem 2. The angular acceleration of a flywheel is given by α = 8 - t where α is in radians per second2
and t is in seconds. If the angular velocity of the flywheel is 42 rad per sec at the end of 6
seconds, determine its initial angular velocity and the number of the revolutions made
during the 6 sec.

Problem 3. The rotation of flywheel is governed by the relation α = 10t - t2 where α is in radians per
second2 and t is in seconds. How many revolutions will the flywheel make, starting from
rest, before it momentarily stops prior to reversing its direction? Solve both analytically and
graphically.

Problem 4. The 25,000lb Hobble space telescope was launched April 1990 and placed in a 380miles
circular orbit above the earth’s surface. It completes one orbit every 97 minutes, going from
a dawn-to-dust cycle nearly 15 times a day. If the radius of the earth is 3,964 miles, what
is the linear velocity of the space telescope in miles per hour (mph)?

Problem 5. What is the angular speed of a machine that contains a wheel diameter of 3m, rotating at
a rate of 1600 rpm?
